"This book provides literature of the social movements that led to the rise of alternative design methods. It also critically examines the methodologies used and how they contribute to best practice in place-making; and it suggests universal application that may be incorporated in the use of the urban design laboratory model as a tool for educating future architecture & urban designers. Since the Boyer of 1996 of 'Building Communities: A New future for Architectural Education and Practice' there has been some movements in architectural and design schools and practitioners exploring ways to inculcate a concern for larger social issues in the design process. Several alternative approaches to the education, practice of architecture and urban design have emerged rooted in the Social Architecture based on four groups of participants; the private visionary; the public professional with a vision; the professional based at non-profit organizations and the activist university. The urban laboratory model is one such model housed in the activist university. One of the arguments for this methodology is that it would lead to a better place-making process"--

Since its invention, electric lighting has had a decisive impact on the psychogeography of urban space. Concentrating on the period from 1880 to World War II, the author argues that electrical lighting has been a major factor in the emergence of modern urban environments, in which the traditional function of architecture as a stable ground has increasingly given way to a growing mutability of forms and fluidity of appearances. This tendency both paralleled and converged with the effects of modern media technologies such as cinema, contributing to the emergence of a new environment characterized by "relational space," in which the city is increasingly defined by the overlap of material and immaterial spatial regimes.

The presented research focuses on the relationship between art and architecture. On the example of the muralDer Weg der Roten Fahne(The Path of the Red Flag) installed at the western façade of theKulturpalast Dresden(Palace of Culture in Dresden) the author analyses the necessity of the mural as an immanent element to communicate political decisions of theGerman Democratic Republic's government to the public by using architecture. Up until now the mural reinforces the political value of theInternational Stylebuilding in function and shape and links its volume to the urban layout.

This article is focused on the relation between the representative architectural culture of Belgrade and the ideology of Yugoslavism between 1918 and 1941, a period that spans the life of the first Yugoslav state, and is distinguished by ideological instability and political turmoil. In an analysis of the material apparatuses of ideology and the spatialization of power, it is intended to illustrate interwar Yugoslavism as it was realized in the cityscape of Belgrade, the Serbian, ex-Yugoslav, capital. Urban and architectural examples will illustrate the ideological role of planning and building in this interwar period.

This interdisciplinary book explores design theories, combining research from a range of fields including architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, urban design, industrial design, software engineering, environmental psychology, geography, anthropology, and sociology. Following an extensive review of the current literature, the author reveals eight major types of theory in design processes. The theories are classified as follows: Rational vs. Empiricist Theories, Procedural vs. Substantive Theories, Normative vs. Positive Theories, Design Scopes, Designers vs. People, Form and Space Creation Paradigms, Efficient Tools and Sources in the Design Process, and Place vs. Non-Place Theories. The respective design theories are illustrated with diagrams, tables and figures, condensing the content of over 140 essential theoretical texts that address various aspects of design processes. Given its scope, the book will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students, and to researchers and practitioners in design, urban planning, urban design, architecture, art, etc.

Abstract
This article proposes a critical analysis of recent interpretations made to the history of architecture and urban planning in the Portuguese colonial context in the twentieth century, particularly in the former African territories. More generally, it intends to explore how the internal history produced by specific fields of activity, such as architecture or urbanism, can reinforce the logic of a national and nationalized history. This effect is due partly to the fact that the legitimacy of these fields is largely dependent on the national identification in the context of activities that are internationalized. I will argue that the specific field of activity, while creating this internal discourse, can directly or indirectly produce representations of the nation, its history and its people on a larger scale, penetrating popular culture and influencing a shared common sense. In the case in question, the internal discourse on architectural and urbanistic works, on authors and styles, eventually reinforces an idealized and idyllic image of Portuguese colonialism.
