"The name Vasiliy Mitrokhin burst into the public's consciousness in the autumn of 1999, with the publication of 'The Mitrokhin Archive'. The revelations in the unique treasure trove of secret material collated and smuggled out of Russia by the former KGB archivist provoked considerable controversy in the UK. The resultant report by the Intelligence and Security Committee of the UK parliament paid tribute to Mitrokhin's commitment and bravery in accumulating and preparing his archive and to the important contribution it made to a fuller understanding of the real nature of the KGB. The FBI described it as 'the most complete and extensive intelligence ever received from any one source'
