However, in late July 2018, after the trial had started, the European Court of Justice ruled that techniques such as gene editing fall within the European Union's 2001 GMO directive, meaning that our gene-edited Camelina plants should be considered as genetically modified (GM). Here we describe our experience of running this trial and the legal transformation of our plants. We also consider the future of European plant research using gene-editing techniques, which now fall under the burden of GM regulation, and how this will likely impede translation of publicly funded basic research.

The paper discusses the modern risks to global security in the context of non-proliferation of biological weapons and the problems relating to elimination of such risks. Also, the author considers a number of scientific issues that have relation to Convention on prohibiting development, production and accumulation of bacteriological (biological) and tocsin weapons and on their destruction. The author studies the dangers of scientific experiments with weapons application, as well as the issues of monitoring the life sciences, including responsibility of scholars for excluding military application of the scientific achievements.

In the framework of the Convention on prohibiting development, production and accumulation of bacteriological weapons consistent efforts are now being taken to characterize the experiments that contradict to this Convention and cause concerns. The paper analyses different types of the experiments and their menaces to the mankind. It is also argued that there is a need for monitoring over the science and for running an enlightening and explanatory work within the research, branch and academic associations, bodies and institutions that have a relation to life sciences and dealing with the international security issues.

Bio-economy describes an economy based on renewable instead of fossil resources. To ensure the success of this transformation it is necessary to involve society into the process. Q methodology was used to empirically assess people's perspectives on bio-economy in Germany. Using a Q-type factor analysis three perspectives were identified. "Sufficiency and close affinity to nature" focuses on natural/ecological relations, while "Technological Progress" favours technologies to become less dependent on fossil resources. The third perspective "Not at any price" is rather concerned about economic trade-offs. People's viewpoints could be useful for politicians and stakeholders to improve communication and knowledge building on bio-economy in Germany.
