Seit dem verheerenden Chemieunfall in der Stadt Jilin (Provinz Jilin) Mitte November 2005, der den Fluss Songhua mit Krebs erregenden Toxiden verseuchte (vgl. C.a., 6/2005, Dok 20), rissen die Meldungen über Umweltkatastrophen in der VR China nicht ab. Im zeitlichen Umfeld ereigneten sich im Dezember 2005 und Januar 2006 weitere Unfälle, die die Luft verschmutzten, das Wasser mehrerer Flüsse kontaminierten und die Trinkwasserversorgung der Anwohner bedrohten. Betroffen waren Provinzen in ganz China, unter anderem Guangdong, Hunan und Henan sowie die regierungsunmittelbare Stadt Chongqing. Insbesondere die Umweltkatastrophe vom November 2005, die den chinesischen Fluss Songhua und später auch den Amur, den russischen Teil des Flusses Heilong, in den der Amur mündet, hochgradig vergiftete, hinterließ Spuren in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung im In- und Ausland. Zu den vielfältigen Gründen dafür zählen die Schwere des Unglücks, die Folgen für die unmittelbaren Anwohner, für die benachbarte Provinz Heilongjiang und für den Nachbarstaat Russland, sowie die Informationspolitik der zuständigen Behörden und der Chemiefabrik. Der vorliegende Beitrag wird die Umstände des Chemieunfalls in Songhua näher beleuchten und die jüngsten Fälle von Umweltverschmutzungen rekapitulieren. Im Folgenden soll dann als Analyserahmen nicht, wie oft üblich, der steigenden Energieverbrauch im Zuge des stetig hohen Wirtschaftswachstums und das so genannte "grüne GDP" verwenden werden. Vielmehr wird der Blick auf den Zusammenhang zwischen der sich verschärfenden Umweltproblematik in der VR China und dem Zuwachs der gesellschaftlichen Unruhen gerichtet.

This paper looks at the research methodology and findings of the collaborative project 'Echoes of Protest' by Sheffield Hallam University academic, Esther Johnson, Professor of Film and Media Arts, and Leeds Arts University academic Debbie Ballin, Senior Lecturer in Filmmaking. 'Echoes of Protest' aims to understand the role protest can play in the politicisation of children and the long-term impact of its aftermath on their lives. The initial phase of this research draws on oral testimony and photography to highlight a seldom-explored perspective of the 1984-1985 UK Miners' Strike. The stories collected are from adults remembering what it was like to grow up during the strike.

Abstract: Although China's farmers did not play a large role in the 1989 protests, they have been quite contentious since. Rural unrest has been triggered in part by reforms and in part by savvy "peasant leaders" who quickly seize opportunities that appear. Recently, many protest leaders have concluded that tame forms of contention are ineffective and that violence and other attention-grabbing tactics are needed. But is rural China about to explode? Not likely. The organization of contention remains low, claims tend to be circumscribed, and incidents are usually small-scale and local. Protest can deflect extraction and send unpopular cadres packing, but there is little evidence that it poses a threat to the regime. That Beijing tolerates so much unrest may even be an indicator of its confidence. Should it begin to treat farmers' grievances like those of Tibetans or Falun Gong supporters, then we will know that the leadership is shaken and the regime is weakening.

In the introduction to this volume, the author explains why social historians should study the relationship between humour and social protest in the past. The following questions are of interest. Under what conditions did laughter serve the cause of the protesters? How did humour strengthen social protest? And to what degree has humour been an effective tool for contentious social movements? Recent developments in the field of social movement theory regarding framing, collective identity, and emotions are combined with insights from humorology. A short account of the individual contributions follow: they range from the Zapatistas in Mexico to Vietnamese garment workers, from sixteenth-century Augsburg to Madrid and Stockholm in the 1990s. The findings point, above all, to the power of humour in the framing of political protest. Humour was used in quite different political opportunity structures, from open democratic societies to harsh repressive regimes. Often, humour furthered the development of the collective identity of a social movement, whereas in several cases humour acted as a powerful communication tool, serving as a true "weapon of the weak".

In this article we analyse the Occupy Democracy demonstration that took place in Parliament Square in the autumn of 2014 and the 'Disobedient Objects' exhibition held at the Victoria and Albert Museum 2014–15. We develop a counter-archaeological analysis of these events on the one hand through reflection on previous archaeological studies of protest sites and the new heritage paradigm and on the other through an exploration of bricolage and performance to unpack the complex materialities of these assemblages of people, places and objects.

The three essays collected in this PhD thesis examine how regulatory, political, and social environments shape capital markets. The first essay studies how regulation affects the behavior of financial analysts. The second essay studies how a political event affects investors' political beliefs and firm disclosures. The third essay studies how spatial differences in the audit office location can explain variations in the going-concern opinions of auditors.

The following article presents a series of hypotheses to analyze the possible transitions between protest and civil war and their relation to inequality. To do so, the article presents an analysis on the emergence of protests and its relation with the increase in inequality across the world. This increase in inequality can in fact lead to social unrest, instability and in some cases facilitate the emergence of future armed conflicts. Thus this scenario of increased inequality presents different possible trajectories:1) protest generated by inequality can escalate into civil conflicts and civil war, or 2) protest generated by inequality can facilitate processes of participation and democratic consolidation. The possibility of either of these transitions taking place is defined by the structural conditions that define the interactions between protestors and authorities in particular settings.

This article provides a comparative analysis of two religiously inspired protests that fed broader social movements: the "rebellion" of immediate abolitionists at Lane Seminary in Cincinnati in 1834 and the new-left "breakthrough" at the Christian Faith-and-Life Community in Austin in 1960. The two cases are examples of moral protests breaking out of Protestant institutions and shaping social movements. From the comparison, we draw general lessons about the meso- and micro-level processes of activist conversions. We show how processes of "rationalization" and "subjectivation" combined in the emergence of new contentious moral orders. We apply these lessons to help explain the creative interactions of evangelical Protestants in the history of American moral protest. Our approach accords with pragmatist and new social movement theories of emergent moral orders.

Since the late 1960s, participation in political protests has become more common in Sweden. Today, a large majority of Swedes have at one point joined a demonstration or would be willing to join a demonstration, and around six percent of the population participates in a demonstration at least once a year. This article uses survey data to discuss the changing protest patterns in relation to the country's traditional corporatist political culture, with a focus on which groups participate in contemporary political protests.
