Deliberate and local increase of the temperature within solid tumors represents an effective therapeutic approach. Thermal therapies embrace this concept leveraging the capability of some species to convert the absorbed energy into heat. To that end, magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) uses magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) that can effectively dissipate the energy absorbed under alternating magnetic fields. However, MNPs fail to provide real-time thermal feedback with the risk of unwanted overheating and impeding on-the-fly adjustment of the therapeutic parameters. Localization of MNPs within a tissue in an accurate, rapid, and cost-effective way represents another challenge for increasing the efficacy of MHT. In this work, MNPs are combined with state-of-the-art infrared luminescent nanothermometers (LNTh; Ag2S nanoparticles) in a nanocapsule that simultaneously overcomes these limitations. The novel optomagnetic nanocapsule acts as multimodal contrast agents for different imaging techniques (magnetic resonance, photoacoustic and near-infrared fluorescence imaging, optical and X-ray computed tomography). Most crucially, these nanocapsules provide accurate (0.2 °C resolution) and real-time subcutaneous thermal feedback during in vivo MHT, also enabling the attainment of thermal maps of the area of interest. AbstractHegemonic Open Science, emergent from the circuits of knowledge production in the Global North and serving the economic interests of platform capitalism, systematically erase the voices of the subaltern margins from the Global South and the Southern margins inhabiting the North. Framed within an overarching emancipatory narrative of creating access for and empowering the margins through data exchanged on the global free market, hegemonic Open Science processes co-opt and erase Southern epistemologies, working to create and reproduce new enclosures of extraction that serve data colonialism-capitalism. In this essay, drawing on our ongoing negotiations of community-led culture-centered advocacy and activist strategies that resist the racist, gendered, and classed structures of neocolonial knowledge production in the metropole in the North, we attend to Southern practices of Openness that radically disrupt the whiteness of hegemonic Open Science. These decolonizing practices foreground data sovereignty, community ownership, and public ownership of knowledge resources as the bases of resistance to the colonial-capitalist interests of hegemonic Open Science.

La obra analiza tanto el marco jurídico actual de la cooperación transfronteriza, con los instrumentos ya existentes, como los diferentes sectores de políticas públicas en los que se dan prácticas de intercambio entre Extremadura y las regiones portuguesas vecinas. Asimismo, intenta aclarar la asimetría institucional, administrativa y política existente a ambos lados de la frontera común, la Raya, pues las diferencias competenciales y de articulación interna en dichos ámbitos constituye, a día de hoy, uno de los obstáculos principales para profundizar en una cooperación transfronteriza cada vez más oportuna y necesaria. ; This book aims to serve as a practical guide so that stakeholders interested in cross-border cooperation between Extremadura and Portugal can have the specific tools with which to carry it out. Culturomics and iEcology, two emerging research areas based on the analysis of online data resources, can provide novel scientific insights and inform conservation and management efforts. To date, culturomics and iEcology have been applied primarily in the terrestrial realm. Here, we advocate for expanding such applications to the aquatic realm by providing a brief overview of these new approaches and outlining key areas in which culturomics and iEcology are likely to have the highest impact, including the management of protected areas; fisheries; flagship species identification; detection and distribution of threatened, rare, and alien species; assessment of ecosystem status and anthropogenic impacts; and social impact assessment. La Unión Europea está atravesando una profunda crisis. Esa es la razón por la cual no puede ser entendida hoy, o incluso ser explicado correctamente, si no tenemos en cuenta esta situación y sus consecuencias futuras. La crisis económica y sus efectos; el déficit democrático del proceso de integración, el surgir de un fuerte euroescepticismo en toda Europa, la muy reciente "Brexit"; el predominio del intergubernamentalismo dentro del marco institucional, el drama de los refugiados en el ámbito europeo, la polémica sobre el acuerdo internacional del libre comercio como TTIP o TISA, el "no" del referéndum holandés sobre el acuerdo entre la UE y Ucrania, las políticas de la Troika… Todos ellos son epítomes de un proceso de integración que se encuentra en una situación crítica. Ni estudiantes ni profesores pueden dar la espalda a esta realidad. Esto debe ser analizado críticamente con el fin de encontrar soluciones a esta grave situación. Es hora de aplicar una nueva epistemología, que se centrará en los problemas reales y contradicciones fácticas dentro de la Unión Europea. En nuestra opinión, ese es el único camino para avanzar en una mejor UE. Así que este libro pretende ser un instrumento para reflexionar sobre los problemas del proceso de integración y cómo podrían resolverse. Se ha configurado como material de enseñanza para explicar los temas de la UE en la Facultad de Derecho de UEx. So this book pretends to be an instrument to reflect on the problems of integration process and how could they be resolved. [Otros] When an ultra-intense and ultra-short laser pulse interacts with solid matter a fraction of the laser pulse can be converted into kinetic energy of a beam of charged particles. Radiochromic film (RCF), widely used as radiation detector in the field of conventional radiotherapy, can be used as detector for laser-accelerated protons. If used in stack configuration it is a useful and versatile tool to obtain 2D spatial distribution and energetic information of proton beams. In order to obtain dosimetric information from RCF it must be properly calibrated. Irradiating film pieces under well known conditions allows us to establish a relation between the optical density (OD) of the radiochromic film, which is measured through a flat bed scanner operating in transmission mode, and the deposited energy in the active layer. A calibration curve over a large dynamic range (3 orders of magnitude) has been obtained for few MeV protons. Our calibration process has been performed at the Spanish National Accelerator Center at Sevilla. We have irradiated several areas of a single RCF with a constant 50 pA beam current and fixed 4 MeV energy from a 3 MV tandem accelerator. We have calculated the deposited energy in the films under the same conditions. We demonstrate that this technique can be used to measure the spectrum and total energy of a laser-accelerated mixed-energy proton beam. This detector has been calibrated for a near future application at the Center of Pulsed, Ultra-short, Ultra-intense Lasers (CLPU) at Salamanca (Spain). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding endogenous RNAs, which are attracting a growing interest as therapeutic molecules due to their central role in major diseases. However, the transformation of these biomolecules into drugs is limited due to their unstability in the bloodstream, caused by nucleases abundantly present in the blood, and poor capacity to enter cells. The conjugation of miRNAs to nanoparticles (NPs) could be an effective strategy for their clinical delivery. Herein, the engineering of non-liposomal lipid nanovesicles, named quatsomes (QS), for the delivery of miRNAs and other small RNAs into the cytosol of tumor cells, triggering a tumor-suppressive response is reported. The engineered pH-sensitive nanovesicles have controlled structure (unilamellar), size (24 weeks), and are prepared by a green, GMP compliant, and scalable one-step procedure, which are all unavoidable requirements for the arrival to the clinical practice of NP based miRNA therapeutics. Furthermore, QS protect miRNAs from RNAses and when injected intravenously, deliver them into liver, lung, and neuroblastoma xenografts tumors. AbstractApolipoprotein E (APOE) has an important role in the multiple trajectories of cognitive aging. However, environmental variables and other genes mediate the impact of APOE on cognition. Our main objective was to analyze the effect of APOE genotype on cognition and its interactions and relationships with sex, age, lipid profile, C-reactive protein, and Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) genotype in a sample of 648 healthy participants over 50 years of age with a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. Our results showed that APOE ε2 carriers performed better in the Verbal Memory (p = .002) and Fluency Domains (p = .001). When we studied the effect of sex, we observed that the beneficial effect of APOE ε2 on the normalized values of these cognitive domains occurred only in females (β = 0.735; 95% confidence interval, 0.396–1.074; p = 3.167·10−5 and β = 0.568; 95% confidence interval, 0.276–0.861; p = 1.853·10−4, respectively). Similarly, the sex-specific effects of APOE ε2 were further observed on lipidic and inflammation biomarkers. In the whole sample, APOE ε2 carriers showed significantly lower levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and C-reactive protein. These differences were found only among females. Furthermore, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol mediated the protective effect of APOE ε2 on cognition in the whole sample and total cholesterol in females, providing candidate physiological mechanisms for the observed genetic effects. Our results show that the neuroprotective role of APOE ε2 in cognition varies with sex and that the lipidic profile partially mediates this protection. Age-related cognitive and functional decline is a continuous biological process with different cognitive trajectories (1). Complex interactions between heritability, environmental influence, and cognitive functions in aging have been highlighted (2). In particular, genetic differences explain around 15%–25% of the variance in life expectancy (3). Therefore, the identification of susceptibility genes and their biological effects on cognitive aging is required to establish interindividual differences in this process and promote early personalized interventions to delay cognitive decline and minimize the financial burden of aging in the health care system.

[EN] In this work we describe a procedure to reduce the number of signals detected by an array of 256 Silicon Photo-multipliers (SiPMs) using a resistor network to divide the signal charge into few readout channels. Several configurations were modeled, and the pulsed signal at the readout contacts were simulated. These simulation results were experimentally tested on a specifically designed and manufactured set of printed circuit boards. Three network configurations were modeled. The modeling provided encouraging results for all three configurations. The measurements on the prototypes constructed for this study, however, provided useful position-sensitivity for only one of the network configurations. The lack of input signal amplification into the networks, the SiPM dark current, as well as the complexity of an eight layers board with parasitic capacitances, could have caused the degradation of resolving the impact photon position. The orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR55 has been directly or indirectly related to basic alterations that drive malignant growth: uncontrolled cancer cell proliferation, sustained angiogenesis, and cancer cell adhesion and migration. However, little is known about the involvement of this receptor in metastasis. Here, we show that elevated GPR55 expression in human tumors is associated with the aggressive basal/triple-negative breast cancer population, higher probability to develop metastases, and therefore poor patient prognosis. Activation of GPR55 by its proposed endogenous ligand lysophosphatidylinositol confers pro-invasive features on breast cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. Specifically, this effect is elicited by coupling to Gq/11 heterotrimeric proteins and the subsequent activation, through ERK, of the transcription factor ETV4/PEA3. Most of the procedures were realized with proton beams of 0.46-5.60 MeV from a tandem accelerator. One approach made use of radiochromic films, for which we calibrated the relation between optical density and energy deposition over more than three orders of magnitude. The validity of these results and of our analysis algorithms has been confirmed by controlled irradiation of film stacks and reconstruction of the total beam charge for strongly non-uniform beam profiles. For the spectral analysis of protons from repeated laser shots, we have designed an online monitor based on a plastic scintillator. The resulting signal from a photomultiplier directly measured on a fast oscilloscope is especially useful for time-of-flight applications. Variable optical filters allow for suppression of saturation and an extension of the dynamic range. [Background] The high prevalence of women that do not reach the recommended level of physical activity is worrisome. A sedentary lifestyle has negative consequences on health status and increases health care costs. A total of 150 eligible women will be recruited and randomly assigned to either a 16-week exercise intervention (3 sessions/week), or to usual care (control) group. The primary outcome measure is the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio. The secondary outcome measures are: i) socio-demographic and clinical information; ii) body composition; iii) dietary patterns; iv) glycaemic and lipid profile; v) physical fitness; vi) physical activity and sedentary behaviour; vii) sleep quality; viii) quality of life, mental health and positive health; ix) menopause symptoms. All outcomes will be assessed at baseline and post intervention. The data will be analysed on an intention-to-treat basis and per protocol. In addition, we will conduct a cost effectiveness analysis from a health system perspective. ; [Discussion] The intervention designed is feasible and if it proves to be clinically and cost effective, it can be easily transferred to other similar contexts.
