LAY SUMMARYIn this study, members and Veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces were asked about their experiences with an online chronic pain treatment that had been specifically tailored to this population, as well as to members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The purpose was to learn what participants in the treatment program liked and disliked about the program itself and the changes they would suggest to improve the program. The authors learned that despite the effort to tailor the treatment to this population, the voices of actual members of the population needed to be heard to truly tailor the program to their needs. The study provides insight into ways to refine the program to better match the unique characteristics of this population, their special connection to each other, and their individual differences. A revised version of the chronic pain program is being developed based on this feedback.

USING THE 1966 GERDA MUNSINGER AFFAIR, THE AUTHOR EXPLORES CANADIAN ATTITUDES IN THE 1960'S CONCERNING THE NATURE OF SECURITY THREATS TO CANADA, THE PROPER ROLE OF GOVERNMENT IN PROTECTING CANADIAN SECURITY, AND ESPIONAGE IN GENERAL. INITIAL FINDINGS SUGGEST THAT THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE WAS OUT OF STEP WITH MUCH OF THE CANADIAN PUBLIC IN DETERMINING WHAT CONSTITUTED A LEGITIMATE SECURITY THREAT AND THAT THERE CLEARLY EXISTED A WIDELY SHARED PERCEPTION OF THE TYPICAL PROFILE OF THE FEMALE SPY, WHICH WAS HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY CONTEMPORARY POPULAR CULTURE.

In 2020, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPCC) led a joint federal-provincial investigation into privacy violations stemming from the use of facial recognition technologies. The investigation was prompted specifically by the mobilization of Clearview AI's facial recognition software in law enforcement, including by regional police services as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Clearview AI's technology is based on scraping social media images, which, as the investigation found, constitutes a privacy law violation according to provincial and federal private sector legislation. In response to the investigation, Clearview AI claimed that consent for scraping social media images was not required from users because the information is already public. This common fallacy of social media privacy serves as a pivot point for the integration of digital policy literacy into the OPCC's digital literacy materials in order to consider the regulatory environment around digital media, alongside their political-economic and infrastructural components. Digital policy literacy is a model that expands what is typically an individual- or organization-level responsibility for privacy protection by considering the wider socio-technical context in which a company like Clearview can emerge.

Henry Astrup Larsen was the first man to traverse the Northwest Passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic, beginning his historic voyage in Vancouver in 1940 and ending it in Halifax in 1942. Within two years of this major success, Larsen navigated the Passage from east to west, thus scoring another "first" by crossing the continent in both directions. In 1940, desirous of asserting its sovereignty over the Arctic Islands, the Canadian government entrusted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with the task of patrolling this barren, largely unexplored region of half a million square miles. Corporal Henry Larsen, captain of th R.C.M.P. schooner St. Roch and a 16-years veteran of the Arctic, was chosen as a key figure in this dangerous, ambitious, and politically expedient undertaking.

THERE HAS BEEN A LACK OF HISTORICAL SCHOLARSHIP ON THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE (RCMP) AND ITS SUCCESSOR AGENCY, THE CANADIAN SECURITY INTELLIGENCE SERVICE (CSIS). HOWEVER, RECENT LAWS HAVE ENABLED SCHOLARS TO ACCESS PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE INFORMATION ON THE SUBJECT. THIS ARTICLE ARGUES THAT THE TIME HAS ARRIVED FOR A RE-EXAMINATION OF THE ORIGINS OF THE RCMP, ESPECIALLY IN ITS SECURITY SERVICE, AND FOR A RECONSIDERATION OF THE ROLE THE CANADIAN STATE HAS PLAYED IN THE AREA OF SURVEILLANCE AND COUNTER-SUBVERSION IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. SPECIAL EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BIRTH OF THE NEW RCMP AND THE CANADIAN LABOR REVOLT.

If you attended a Canadian university in the past eighty years, it's possible that, unbeknownst to you, Canadian security agents were surveying you, your fellow students, and your professors for 'subversive' tendencies and behaviour. Since the end of the First World War, members of the RCMP have infiltrated the campuses of Canada's universities and colleges to spy, meet informants, gather information, and on occasion, to attend classes. Why they were there is the subject of a new book by Steve Hewitt. Spying 101 provides new insight on the previously secret operations of one of Canada's most powerful institutions and best-known national symbols, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. For more than eighty years, the RCMP and its younger counterpart, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), have been conducting covert investigations within the hallowed halls of Canadian universities in an attempt to discover 'subversive' activity among faculty, employees, and students, and, periodically, to hunt for spies and terrorists. Information has been collected on thousands of Canadians, including prominent individuals such as Pierre Berton, Peter Gzowski, Lotta Hitschmanova, and RenT LTvesque. Spying 101 offers a fresh examination of the relationship in the intelligence field between the RCMP and federal departments, such as National Defence and External Affairs, and its political masters, including Pierre Trudeau. Hewitt also explores the complicity of the RCMP in the handling of the anti-APEC protests at the University of British Columbia in 1997 and offers an overview of the current work by Canada's intelligence services at the nation's universities. Relying on thousands of pages of previously secret RCMP and government documents, and on recollections of participants including former members of the RCMP Security Service, Spying 101 offers a vivid portrait of a crucial, yet unstudied, chapter in the history of the world's most famous police force.
