2001 was self-evidently a significant year for party politics in the UK by simple fact that it was a general election year. This article seeks to provide an overview of party competition and dynamics during the election campaign and subsequently. In particular, it focuses on party system dynamics across the UK as a whole and within each of the devolved 'regions'; the implications of the election for party system realignment and dealignment; the impact of the new regulatory framework of party politics; and the outcome and implications of the Conservative leadership election.
