In Turkey, Agricultural Insurance Foundation was established in 1995. Agricultural insurance pool (TARSIM) formed with the contributions of private agencies and organizations which have run activity in the fields of insurance and agriculture and the government support began its activities in 2006. The livestock (cattle) insurance, which is a part of agricultural insurance, has been practiced in the country since 1960. The aim of this study was to investigate the role and the functioning of livestock (cattle) insurance in Turkey between 2007 and 2015. According to the research findings, the share of the cattle insurance in the total number of agricultural insurance policies is 1.94% in 2015. This result showed that its necessity of increases of the livestock (cattle) insurance in agricultural sector considering farmers' financial position and the size of their farms.

Despite the institutionalisation of volcanic eruption early warning and response systems, casualties are still seen among local farmers who are reluctant to evacuate. Farmers may also prematurely return to their farms to save livelihoods and take care of animals. Case studies and media reports show the importance of understanding the cultural beliefs of residents when developing emergency plans. By reviewing literature from different scientific disciplines in relation to volcanic eruptions and livestock emergency preparedness, differences can be identified in the underlying risk and control paradigms, including the meaning given to volcanoes and livestock. Concurrently, livestock emergency preparedness approaches fall short of people-orientation. Using selected studies that consider these aspects, a people-centred and culture-sensitive framework to improve local learning and participation in emergency preparedness is offered. With disaster events becoming more frequent, participatory learning is useful to strengthen emergency management and preparedness programs.

ABSTRACT
This case study deals with assessing the value of livestock in the financial statements of a dairy farming business. With a global market predicted to reach US$494 billion by 2015 (GIA 2012), dairy farming is the largest sector of world agriculture production. It is an important industry in many countries. For example, in the USA, dairy farming contributes more than $160 billion in economic output and provides more than 90,000 jobs (DFT 2012).
The subject matter of the case study is a small dairy farming business in Pakistan, a country that is the fifth largest producer of milk in the world (FAO 2009). The case study describes a disagreement between the management and the auditors about the initial recognition and subsequent measurement of crossbred cattle in the financial statements of the business. The aim of this case study is to help students understand the issues involved in assessing the value of livestock in the light of the guidance provided by the International Accounting Standard on Agriculture (IAS 41). The case study can also be used to help students understand the differences between the requirements of U.S. GAAP and international accounting standards, as well as the possible reasons for these differences.

The threat of water scarcity in Sub-Saharan Africa is real, due to the expanding agricultural needs, climate variability and inappropriate land use. Livestock keeping is the fastest growing agricultural sector, partly because of increasing and changing demands for adequate, quality and diverse food for people, driven by growing incomes and demographic transitions. Besides the economic benefits, rising livestock production could also deplete water and aggravate water scarcity at local and global scales. The insufficient understanding of livestock-water interactions also led to low livestock productivity, impeded sound decision on resources management and undermined achieving positive returns on investments in agricultural water across Sub-Saharan Africa. Innovative and integrated measures are required to improve water productivity and reverse the growing trends of water scarcity. Livestock water productivity (LWP), which is defined as the ratio of livestock outputs to the amount of water depleted, could be improved through: (i) raising the efficiency of the water inputs by integrating livestock with crop, water and landscape management policies and practices. Improving feed water productivity by maximising transpiration and minimising evaporation and other losses is critical; (ii) increasing livestock outputs through improved feed management, veterinary services and introducing systemc ompatible breeds; and (iii) because livestock innovation is a social process, it is not possible to gain LWP improvements unless close attention is paid to policies, institutions and their associated processes. Policies targeting infrastructure development would help livestock keepers secure access to markets, veterinary services and knowledge. This paper extracts highlights from various papers presented in the special issue of The Rangeland Journal on technologies and practices that would enable improving water productivity at various scales and the premises required to reverse the negative trends of water depletion and land degradation.

Udgivelsesdato: November 2009 ; Over the last 80 years a wide range of diverse organic livestock systems have developed. The driving force behind these developments has mainly been the farmers, consumers and various movements; and it has happened more "despite research" than "because of research." Most production methods have developed in Western Europe and USA, where they are primarily niche products for consumers who give priority to environmental and animal welfare concerns. In these countries organic livestock production offers the option of establishing a niche product that can be sold at a higher price, e.g. as for milk and eggs. In some cases, the potential of organic farming is associated with the adoption of organic principles into existing systems with the aim of improving sustainability, and achieving environmentally friendly production, food security and good food quality. In the US, government support for organic research, some of which was for livestock studies, increased from 15 million dollars in 2002 to 78 million in 2008.

Diese vorliegende Datensammlung umfasst ausgewählte Ergebnisse der Viehzählungen für Rinder, Schweine, Geflügel, Schafe, Pferde, Ziegen und Bienenvölker. Die erste Viehzählung fand 1873 statt. Sie wurde zunächst in größeren Zeitabständen und ab 1925 jährlich durchgeführt. Im Rahmen der tierischen Erzeugungsstatistiken werden die Viehbestände in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland jährlich im Dezember erfasst. Dazu kommen Zwischenzählungen für Rinder und Schafe im Juni und für Schweine im April und August. Nur jedes vierte Jahr – zuletzt im Dezember 1977 – wurden auch Ziegen und Bienenvölker erfasst.
