Main description: What was the driving force that motivated Austrians driven out of their homeland after 1938 and seeking refuge in the United States and Canada to devote their professional lives to the cultivation of literature in German, thus becoming intermediaries re-tilling the intellectual subsoil of the 'perpetrator cultures' Germany and Austria in their new home? Alongside practical considerations it was certainly a love of literature, of Kafka, Rilke, Werfel, Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig and their literary worlds, all of which held out the prospect of regaining a finer, more humane homeland. Throughout, however, their suspicion of German literary studies (a discipline which as early as the 1920s had vigorously supported the dissemination of nationalist and national socialist cultural ideology at Germany's universities) remained very marked indeed. At the same time, the analytic re-acquisition of literature, philosophy and art was a way of rebelling against the enforced abandonment not only of murdered friends, slaughtered relatives and confiscated property but also everything which had started to represent a home from home culturally, intellectually and emotionally.

Sociotechnical imaginaries (SIs) have emerged as a popular and generative concept within Science and Technology Studies (STS). This article draws out the affective component of SIs, combining a review of relevant literatures with an empirical case study of an anti-fracking imaginary in Ireland to suggest how we might theorize an affective technopolitics of SIs. The literature review identifies three key aspects of SIs that would benefit from a more coherent conceptualization of affect: the utopian, productive, and collectivizing dimensions of imaginaries. Emotions such as desire and fear appear prominently in the SI literature, but in ways that require development. Using empirical examples from my research, I outline what this developed understanding of emotions in imaginaries might look like. I examine the role that emotions played in the development and settlement of an anti-fracking imaginary in Ireland, highlighting how the intensive, multimodal, and dynamic nature of affect underpinned the productive, collective, and utopian dimensions of the SI. I conclude with some remarks about how this developed theory of emotion positions STS researchers to address issues of humanity, representation, and the building of better worlds.

This article sets out to address a gap in the business communication literature by focusing on entrepreneurs' use of podcasts. I will first report on the business communication research that has been done so far on podcasts and will then go on to expand the scope and explore the literature on podcasts in the wider communication field. This will lead me to propose a set of four key characteristics of the genre, which I will use as the basis for a qualitative study of a single six-episode podcast series launched by an entrepreneur in a North Western European country. Drawing on a linguistic ethnographically inspired analysis I will investigate the hybrid nature of the entrepreneurial podcast (featuring personal transparency and storytelling, but no process transparency or interactivity) and I will argue that it is opening up new opportunities for leadership communication. I will conclude by reflecting on how the analysis presented here can be seen to index the genre's transition from a homespun to a corporate medium, echoing the notion of media re-colonization and tying in with concerns about leadership branding voiced in the critical management literature.

To date, social work literature regarding transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals situates TGD individuals as objects of social work knowledge and intervention. While this existent work represents an important foundation, it may foreclose other positionalities for TGD individuals. Therefore, this feminist critical discourse analysis of social work literature utilizes professionalization and transnormativity as conceptual anchors to explore the phenomenon of "transgender lived experience" in social work literature in order to understand both the nature of transgender lived experience and who is permitted to have it. Ultimately, this project found that transgender lived experience within social work is a totalizing discourse centered on a wholly painful experience of othering that can only be ameliorated through medical intervention. While this experience can confer expertise upon some individuals, transnormativity and professionalization operate in concert with this discourse to situate TGD people as transgender in the first place, foreclosing any other subjectivity. Therefore, future inquiry into the experiences of TGD individuals in social work must be willing to embrace epistemic perspectives and methodologies that emphasize the nuance and diversity of individuals' experiences and resist totalizing grand narratives.

A core aspect of Sustainable Human Resource Management (S-HRM) has been its focus on developing high-quality employment relationships. This endeavor, however, has become increasingly complex, because the employee-employer relationship has undergone a profound transformation in recent years. This problem is further exacerbated by inherent tensions that surface when organizations aim to develop high-quality employment relationships in concert with sustainability-related goals. In this article, we intend to align theory and practice toward a more sustainable HRM by explaining how the psychological contract (PC) literature can provide new insights and perspectives to understand these tensions. We begin by delving into the nature and drivers of these sustainability-related tensions that arise when organizations strive to develop high-quality employment relationships. Next, we recount previous PC research that can inform the S-HRM literature to better understand how those tensions unfold. Finally, we identify concrete avenues for future research and discuss why integrating the PC and S-HRM literature could be an important path to expand our understanding of how to create more sustainable employment relationships.

ABSTRACT
Recent research in global literature, with a focus on non-Anglophone and non-European literatures and cultures, has sparked a growing interest in utopian and dystopian narratives. These narratives present alternative world scenarios that unfold in both the present and the future. Amidst the escalating impact of the climate crisis in the Anthropocene, the complex issue of migration, and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, speculative fiction in the Mediterranean region captures the fears, aspirations, and dreams of individuals concerning both the present and the future. Over the last three decades, authors in contemporary Türkiye have increasingly produced utopian and dystopian works. These speculative works exhibit a heightened focus on ecological breakdown, political polarization, gender roles, and the exercise of power. Çağrı Aktaş's Toprak Palas (Underground Station, 2018), a representative work of speculative fiction in contemporary Turkish literature, carries both utopian and dystopian undertones as it investigates the pressing challenges of Rahim, Aktaş's finely textured underground city. Through its open-ended structure, the narrative galvanizes readers into action, urging an expedited process of transformation toward a different future.

AbstractThis article examines Zhang Wojun (1902–1955) and the memory of his 'collaboration' with Japan during the Second World War. A Taiwanese-born writer and educator who lived in Beijing for 25 years, his drifting identity was full of ambiguities. Although he was one of the key intellectuals behind Taiwan's New-Old Literatures Debate and responsible for introducing many May Fourth ideas to Taiwan, he also played an important role in bringing Japanese literature and thought into Chinese discourse during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. During the war, he continued to teach in Beijing and travelled to Japan to attend the Greater East Asia Writers' conferences. Some of his works from this period call for the Chinese people to support the empire and eradicate Western culture and literature from Asia, but many of his writings also indicate a strong sense of Chinese nationalism.This article considers the memories of Zhang, his various intellectual contributions, and his oeuvre, arguing that his collaboration must be understood and contextualized within his intellectual landscape through a research methodology that examines continuities and change across decades of his life and work.

Love is one of the most important themes of literature. This is the main theme of stories such as Romeo and Juliet, Aucassin û Nicolette and Leyla and Majnun. However, many social, religious and philosophical problems are also discussed within the framework of the love story that these people experience. We can say something similar about Kurdish literature. In both classical and modern literature, the theme of love has been used as a tool for the expression of important problems. We can see a similar situation in the Kurdish novel. In this context, this study analyzes four kurdish novels whose main theme is love. These novels are Mehmet Uzun's Sîya Evînê, Helîm Yusiv's Sobarto, Çîdem Baran's Li Peravê Torê Tora Evînê and Bextiyar Elî's Êvara Perwane. Although the main theme of Sîya Evînê is the love between Memdûh Selîm Beg and Feriha, the problematic of nationalism, colonialism in Sobarto, Kurdish identity in Li Peravê Torê Tora Evînê and the problem of subjectivity in Êvara Perwane are discussed. As a result, different political and social issues are discussed within the framework of the stories of the lovers.

Cultivation requirements are also outlined, and the species long history in the literature, with three centuries of cultivation, is discussed. Methods of propagation, pests and diseases and the species' availability are also covered. Comments are also provided on the growth 'phases' of this somewhat variable species outlined in the literature. Rather than pointing to discreet infraspecific entities, they are simply considered part of the range of variation, to the extent that the species' synonymy covers all of the variation. Stemming from a recent literature assessment of plant phylogenies, the odd transfer of well‐known species, in Coreopsis L. and Cosmos, to Bidens, is critiqued. The UV‐absorption patterns reflecting the nectar guides in open capitula is discussed, noting that within the genus there are three distinct modes of distribution of the anthochlor pigments.

AbstractThis paper explores the ambiguous relationship between Confucian culture and innovation based on the scholarly literature. Applying a scoping review approach, the purpose of the literature review is to uncover the reasons behind the ambiguities of empirical research results and conceptualizations of how Confucianism affects innovation on the individual and on the organizational level. The paper builds on the assumption that the different operationalizations of Confucian culture are behind these contradictions. Since Confucianism is an ideology that has developed for over 2000 years, and even its most often cited virtues and principles are quite heterogenous, approaches to its operationalization in the field of management are also diverse. The results of the literature review indicate that different approaches to Confucian culture indeed show homogeneity in the conceptualization of the Confucianism-innovation relationship. Virtues and principles related to rigid hierarchies and great power distance have a detrimental effect, while others a rather positive one. Therefore, the paper argues that a more specific denomination of cultural factors should be necessary to avoid biased and unspecified results in both theoretical and empirical approaches.

Early papers found empirical support for a natural resource curse—the notion that exporting natural resources is detrimental to economic growth. Later papers, using reportedly improved econometric models and data, largely reversed these early findings by estimating that natural resources improve economic performance. However, this changing coefficient on natural resource dependence over time may not only be a function of model or data quality. Masked by this evolution in the economics literature is the possibility that the fundamental relationship between natural resources and economic performance has changed over the past several decades. This paper sheds a new perspective on the substantial resource curse literature by repeatedly estimating a single econometric model on data that evolve over time. The coefficient on natural resource dependence is estimated to steadily increases with the passage of time from a value that is negative and significant (for 1970, the basis for much of the early literature) to a positive and significant value a few decades later. Whatever natural resource estimated initially with data from 1970 seems to have evolved into a resource blessing over time.

Although workplace gossip is ubiquitous, more scholarship is needed to determine how employees may use gossip to attain valuable social resources at work—namely, their experience of power. Drawing from the gossip literature and research on power in the workplace, we identify proximal (i.e., increased power accrual) and distal (i.e., diminished voluntary turnover) positive outcomes for employees enacting negative and positive gossip about the organization at work. Using a sample of 338 nurses, we found that positive workplace gossip about the organization increases expert power. Our analysis further revealed that positive workplace gossip about the organization had a negative indirect effect on the voluntary turnover of gossip actors via their expert power. Our findings contribute to the organizational literature on the benefits of gossip to actors and serve to further enrich the emerging literature which has considered the relationship between power and turnover. An important implication of our research is that organizations need to recognize the dynamics of organization-directed gossip and its potential to serve as a source of social power for employees and a retention driver for those who accrue power in expertise.

This article investigates the implicit subtext of masculinity that undergirds Yashpal's two-volume novel Jhutha Sach (The False Truth, 1958–1960), one of the most frequently sidestepped classics of Partition literature. It seeks to address the persistent scholarly amnesia that largely exists within the ever-expanding corpus of Partition Studies and which, more often than not, reveals an overwhelming preoccupation with questions relating to violence, memory, trauma, and testimony. While the usual suspects of Partition literature have been analysed and re-analysed over and over again, the most voluminous fictional account of the devastating tragedy has received scant critical attention. Yashpal's novel both foregrounds a narrative of hurt, violence, and suffering as well as espouses discursive notions of survival, fortitude, and recuperation. The male characters are not only symbolically emasculated on various occasions but also strategically pitted against the more defiant, heroic, and resourceful female protagonists, enabling the novel to underscore a radical feminist aesthetics that seeks to move beyond the classical themes of Partition literature, such as bewilderment, disorientation, and vulnerability.

The sea has always been a source of inspiration in literature. The sea becomes a creative battleground in literature because it depicts human life full of challenges, difficulties, hopes, and adventures. In literature, the sea becomes a metaphor that helps reveal human life's complexity by showing life's beauty and ferocity. This study aims to advance existing studies to identify unique concepts, ideologies, or discourses relating to the ocean that are hidden in 25 short stories from 2010 to 2021 in Indonesian newspapers. Using an interactive interpretation method, all short stories are analyzed through content analysis techniques to reveal the various creative battle spaces. Through a mixed methods study with a critical approach, this research found four creative battle spaces with their respective subspaces, namely: (1) economic battle space with capitalist and impact of capitalism subspace; (2) moral battle space with action crime and power struggle subspace; (3) inner battle space with serenity, sorrow relief, the battle between reality and desire, and the battle of life subspace; and (4) surrealism idea battle space with the meeting space of two worlds, the endless search, surrealism-economics, and spirituality and imagery subspace.

The object of the article is to reveal on the materials from the archive of I.P. Ladyzhnikow Publishing House (1905–1932), found by the author, various aspects of publishing literature in foreign languages.The company was one of the largest Russian-language publishing houses in Berlin, which, in addition to the mass publication of books in Russian, published in large volumes in the first two decades of the 20th century books in foreign languages, mostly in German. They published Russian classical literature, works of contemporary authors. The main volume fell on the works by L.N. Tolstoy, A.M. Gorky, L.N. Andreev. In addition to Russian writers, the company collaborated with various foreign writers. In its activities, the publishing house always respected the rules of copyright in accordance with the rules of the Berne Literary Convention. When translating books into foreign languages, the company interacted with a large number of translators, with some of whom, for example, August Scholz, it had not only literary, but also business relations. The publishing house left a big mark in the history of familiarizing the European reader with the best examples of native literature.
