The terms "thanatourism" and "dark tourism" relate to visiting places of human tragedy, which are increasingly developed as tourist destinations. There is a need to trouble thanatouristic assumptions through sharing and discussing lived experiences. These challenge the simplistic mechanistic marketing and conventional research practices of thanatourism. This dialogic autoethnographic study responds to this need, addressing thanatourism from the subjective and emotional perspectives of "insider" scholar-participant-consumers. Two interactive dialogic stories are presented by the lead and second authors, with the fourth providing a theoretically informed response. In the final section, the third author, an experienced autoethnographer and outsider to the thanatouristic topic and context, interrogates the lead author on concepts and issues emerging in the autoethnographic dialogue. Through engaging with this study, the reader is offered a multilayered, polysemic, emotionally provocative account of the ethical interface between thanatourism, consumer behaviour and marketing practices, and an exemplar model for future autoethnographic work.

AbstractA screening environmental justice analysis was conducted of 50 United States ports that manage more than 10 million tons of products. Using the U.S. EPA's EJSCREEN tool, the author examined seven demographic and 11 environmental metrics at distances of 2, 5, and 10 miles from the port centroids. The 2‐mile zones were found to have higher values for 13 of the 18 environmental inequity indicators, including all three measures of air toxics, fine particles, proximity to hazardous waste sites, and facilities with risk management plans, as well as indicators of low socioeconomic status and minority populations. With ports expanding, the author discusses the need for maintaining and upgrading EPA's screening tool and considers that alternative futures for port neighborhoods depend upon the strength of their civic groups and elected officials, the role of their government port authorities, and civic values of their commercial users.

Taha Hussein is one of the greatest thinkers of Egypt, who was provided with high intelligence and extensive knowledge in different areas. Formation of his personality coincided with the dramatic moments in the history of the country associated with the British occupation of Egypt. The author of paper traces the role of T. Hussein in the development and reform of education in Egypt in the early thirties of the 20th century. Moreover, the author analyzes the pedagogical concepts of T. Hussein, i. e. the idea of the democratization of education and overcoming the inertia of public consciousness, which blocked the creative development of the individual. As the Minister of Education of Egypt, T. Hussein was able to implement a number of his ideas on the progress and reform of education, the most important of which was the establishment of free primary education for all segments of the population, regardless of social status and material welfare.

PurposeThe author extends the work on diversity policy in UK higher education by centring the voices of Black and minority ethnic scholars and de-centring white comfort with the aim of a call to stop the pain that sanitised university diversity policies cause Black and minority ethnic scholars.Design/methodology/approachUsing in-depth qualitative and auto-ethographic research methods, this paper engages with both respondents' narratives as well as the author's experience of carrying out the research within the walls of predominately white universities.FindingsIn order for universities to move beyond hollow and sanitised diversity, they must centre the voices of Black and minority ethnic scholars. Respondents spoke of their experiences of pain, and feelings of "taking up" space in predominately white universities. The author also discusses respondents' feelings towards diversity and inclusion policies such as the Race Equality Charter Mark.Originality/valueThe research is built on previous work on diversity by decentring white comfort.

In a recent contribution to this journal, Munck and Snyder found that many studies suffer from a deficient application of qualitative and quantitative methods. They argue that the combination of small-n and large-n analysis represents a viable method for promoting the production of knowledge. Recently, Evan Lieberman proposed nested analysis as a rigorous approach for comparative research that builds on the complementary strengths of quantitative and qualitative analysis. In this paper, the author examines the methodological potential of nested inference to advance comparative political analysis, arguing that the specific methodological problems of nested designs have not been fully appreciated. It is shown that, under certain circumstances, nothing is gained from a nested analysis. On the contrary, one might lose more than one gains compared to single-method designs. The author suggests specific methodological principles that take these problems into account to make nested analysis fruitful for comparative studies.

The article considers some modern approaches to understanding social-philo­sophic basis for Russian World theory. The author gives a conclusion that modern approaches to understanding this concept and this phenomenon accu­mulating mostly social-philosophic and sociological theories take their roots in western European tradition. The article presents an approach to understand metaphysical view of the Russian World as a religious idea basing on Russian philosophic tradition. It also deals with the position that the basis for the concept of the Russian World finds itself in the Orthodox ethics of interactions forming a specific reality for the bearers of such an idea in their everyday practices and determining their way of thinking notwithstanding their religious and philosophic positions. The author assumes that having accepted the Ortho­dox religious basis for the supporters of the concept of the Russian World does not necessarily mean following this religious dogmatics by all participants of such an interaction.

In light of recent events of racialized violence across the United States, there has been renewed calls for schools to address issues of racism in head-on ways. In these efforts, teachers have engaged in critical reflection on their teaching practices and curricular materials. In doing so, however, they often overlook an important pedagogical tool for fostering critical conversations about race: the school space itself. In this article, the author presents spatial ethnographic data from a larger immersive study of racial pedagogies at a school in South Central Los Angeles. In order to address the overlooked value of the school space as pedagogue, the article focuses on the highly racialized hallway iconography present at the school. In particular, the article interrogates the racial politics embedded in the content and theorizes a means of understanding school design choices as a form of public pedagogy. Building on Torin Monahan's theory of "built pedagogy," the author puts forth a theory of the "built pedagogical environment."

In the first part of the paper the author presents the key theses of Vickie Sullivan's‎reading of Machiavelli. Sullivan argues that, in order to prevent corruption,‎Machiavelli innovatively reworks elements of Christian teaching‎for entirely temporal purposes and offers a specific, modern solution, 'new‎Rome', in the form of an irreligious, fearful republic which early and effectively‎punishes the ambitious few seeking to establish tyranny. In the internal‎realm of the city, the Florentine reduces class desires of the plebs and the‎greats under the common goal of acquisition. A bellicose, tumultuous republic‎satisfies the desires of all the social actors, resulting in a lasting political order.‎In the second part the author critically engages with Sullivan's interpretation,‎drawing on Claude Lefort's interpretation of Machiavelli. Surprisingly,‎Lefort's groundbreaking work on Machiavelli has been absent in Straussian‎readings of the Florentine. By highlighting the authentically democratic nature‎of Machiavelli's project, in contrast with Sullivan's reading, an entirely‎different 'new Rome' arises on the horizon.‎

In this thesis author marks the necessity of the realism phenomenon investigation as a factor of the political process. Author gives the definition of the political process category with the philosophical, legal and political points of view. Foregoing points of views discovers several phenomenon which has strong influence to the political realism realization on the Ukrainian territory. ; В работе автор отмечает необходимость детального исследования феномена реализма как фактора политического процесса. peer-reviewed ; Purpose: This study aims to understand how a facilitator's pedagogy changed over time in the process of supporting a community of learners to teach using an activist sport approach. Methods: Self-study framed this four-semester research project. Participants included the lead author, two critical friends, 10 preservice teachers, and 110 youth. Data collected included lead researcher's field notes and debriefing meetings between the lead author and the two critical friends. Results: Findings identified the facilitator's: (a) struggles to create a democratic learning space in a university context, (b) discomfort with giving up control and allowing for various degrees of preservice teachers' engagement, and (c) negotiation of feeling of saudade (the love that remains after someone is gone) while creating a group identity. Discussion/Conclusion: A pedagogy of facilitation as an act of love offers genuine possibilities for decolonizing and reinventing reality by naming, critiquing, and challenging/negotiating forms of oppression.

The Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) ambition to neutralise independent academia at home and abroad is the conundrum at the heart of this article. Based on a review of the literature on sharp power, hybrid interference, the United Front system and the CCP's globalising censorship regime the author argues that the CCP's rule by fear has already induced self-censorship among many western academics. In the empirical part the author puts the spotlight on an increasingly contentious debate among China experts in Germany (2018-21). This expert debate on China takes place across websites, journals, interviews, public talks, public statements of learned societies as well as oral and written testimonies of China scholars at parliamentary committees. Seen in its entirety, Germany's public China discourse reveals an unwillingness to face up to the changed political realities of Xi's hard authoritarian China. The article concludes with recommendations on how to overcome arbitrary limitations imposed by the CCP's political censorship.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is one of the UN specialized agencies. Its work and functions gained even more importance in 2020 with the emergence of the corona virus. The eyes of the entire international community focused on this organization and its Director General. Nowadays, its efficiency has been subject to various forms of criticism. In this paper, the author first provides a brief overview of this organization and its significance. The central part of the paper focuses on the activities of the WHO during the Covid-19 pandemic, through the clarification of the concept of public health emergency of international concern and the use of International Health Regulations. Finally, the author discusses the possible reform of this body. The aim of this paper is to familiarize the readers with the World Health Organization and put its activities in the context of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The Refugee Crisis in 2015 has considered creating a major problem to European society. This issue was capitalized by far-right political movement to create anti-immigrant narratives. Right-wing political groups have linked the anti-immigrant narratives to the negative impact European societies have had on security, politics, economics and social culture. In this article, the author argues that the increase of anti-immigrant narratives also entails a crucial aspect that is important to analyze, which is the fragile construction of the European identity. The integration of European identity, multiculturalism, and social cohesion are the important aspects of such identity. This is more apparent nowadays as the immigrant population is increasing. The author suggests two points of view on this ma er: the discussion on migrants in Europe and how the anti-immigrant narrative dominates the transition discourse contestation in Europe, especially how the narratives develop after the 2015 refugee crisis.

The qualification (bachelor's) work examines the current dimension of international gender policy and the degree of Ukraine's involvement in these processes. The author emphasized the peculiarities of the development and transformation of approaches to the study of this phenomenon. The place of gender policy in the activities of international organizations on the examples of the UN, the EU and the Council of Europe is also studied. The author paid special attention to the peculiarities of gender policy in Ukraine and the possibilities of applying international practices. ; У кваліфікаційній (бакалаврській) роботі досліджено сучасний вимір міжнародної гендерної політику та ступінь залученості України до цих процесів. Авторкою було зроблено акцент на особливості розвитку та трансформації підходів щодо вивчення даного явища. Також досліджено місце гендерної політики в діяльності міжнародних організацій на прикладах ООН, ЄС та Ради Європи. Особливу увагу авторкою було приділено особливостям гендерної політики в Україні та можливостям застосування міжнародних практик.

В статье рассмотрены специфика возникновения и основные этапы развития законодательства о защите конкуренции во Франции. Автором выявлено влияние социально-экономических и политических аспектов на формирование антимонопольной политики. Франция, являясь государством-участницей Евросоюза, подчиняется нормам наднационального законодательства, анализу которого в статье уделено особое внимание. Автор делает вывод об усилении влияния права Евросоюза на национальное право Франции, в том числе и в сфере защиты конкуренции. ; The article considers the specifics of occurrence and the basic stages of development of the legislation on protection of competition in France. The author reveals the impact of socio-economic and political aspects in the formation of antitrust policy. France, as a state member of the European Union, subject to the rules of supranational law, the analysis of which is paid special attention. The author concludes about the growing influence of EU law over national law of France, including in the sphere of protection of competition.
