In this book, Hannes Charen presents an alternative examination of kinship structures in political theory. Employing a radically transdisciplinary approach, On the Politics of Kinship is structured in a series of six theoretical vignettes, or frames. Each chapter frames a figure, aspect, or relational context of the family or kinship. Some chapters are focused on a critique of the family as a state sanctioned institution while others cautiously attempt to recast kinship in a way to reimagine mutual obligation through the generation of kinship practices understood as a perpetually evolving set of relational responses to finitude. In doing so, Charen considers the ways in which kinship is a plastic social response to embodied exposure, both concealed and made more evident in the bloated, feeble and broken individualities and nationalities that seem to dominate our social and political landscape today. On the Politics of Kinship will be of interest to political theorists, as to feminists, anthropologists and social scientists in general.

We know that conflict, and people's memory of it, profoundly shapes both individual selfhoods and social identities. War and the British explores key ideas of British collective nationhood and personal identity, and in particular shines an important spotlight on the impact of gender on Britain's national consciousness, from the outbreak of World War II in 1939 to the end of the Gulf War in 1991.This book builds on current historiography by examining how notions about gender shaped the experiences of the war and how it was remembered in the collective public consciousness. It argues that, despite women's wartime role in 'total war', men in the armed forces were encouraged to regard themselves as being bound together in unity by masculinity and common experience, while women remained individuals with prime responsibilities to home and family. As Lucy Noakes shows, during the Second World War, the British government ensured that lipstick and corsets were never scarce, so that less soldiers returned from war disappointed by the unfeminine women who greeted them. Thus, Noakes demonstrates how the conflicts strengthened gender boundaries by grouping men together in a masculine experience of combat from which women were strictly excluded. The 'People s War' it was not.Now with a new preface, revised introduction and foreword by Penny Summerfield, War and the British provides an incisive analysis of public and private ideas of national identity in times of war and how they were shaped by gender. This book traces the development of women's activism and agrarian feminisms in the Midwest after 1945, as farm women's lives were being transformed by the realities of modern agriculture. The author demonstrates that in an era when technology, depopulation, and rapid economic change dramatically altered rural life, midwestern women met these challenges with their own feminine vision of farm life. Their "agrarian feminisms" offered an alternative to, but not necessarily a rejection of, second-wave feminism.

Although the participation of women in the military has been the subject of attention in the social sciences since the 1970s, there has been no specific focus on this issue within the context of the European Union. The aim of this book is to redress this imbalance. Exploring the policies adopted in the United Kingdom, Germany and France over the past 20 years, it situates them in the unique context of the European Union. Through a survey of the political and legal dimensions of the wider recruitment of women into a professional milieu that has long remained a male stronghold, Ir̈ne Eulriet traces variations between the three countries back to differences in their public cultures. In doing so, she exposes the complex frameworks within which national military institutions operate and shows, on the basis of her European findings, that patterns of women's military participation vary in shape and content beyond what is commonly assumed.

Citizenship can be represented as both a status and a practice, reflecting the liberal/social rights and civic republican traditions but also moving beyond them in a critical synthesis. A key challenge for contemporary feminist and radical citizenship theory is how to move beyond the bogus universalism that underpinned both of these traditions, as well as that implied by the category `woman', so as to accommodate citizenship's universalist promise to the demands of diversity and difference. The article suggests how citizenship as both a status and a practice can be rethought so as to respond to this challenge. Drawing on a range of social and political theorists, it offers the concept of a `differentiated universalism' as a means of encapsulating the creative tension between the universal and the particular that lies at the heart of this approach to citizenship.

In this review, I try to sketch out and evaluate briefly Anderson's new theory of value. I then focus on the social and dialogical account of rationality tied to her value theory and argue that it will be unable to rule out racism as neatly as Anderson sometimes implies. Still, this failure allows her theory to account for the complexity of racism, and points us in promising directions.

This essay follows the question of variation—why are no two natural beings the same?—from its subordinate role in Darwin's early theory of natural selection to a dominant but carefully restricted role as a positive incentive to reproduction in his later theory of sexual selection. The author wants to see Darwin's career-long fascination with the coevolution of orchids and their insect pollinators as the emergence within his theory of an alternative to natural selection—a positive force of attraction that works both on and through variation. The currency of the orchid-wasp relationship in contemporary critical theory suggests that such an alternative motor for history is beginning to surface there as well.

karyn ball is Associate Professor of English and Film Studies specializing in literary and critical theory at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. She writes on Critical Theory, cultural studies, and the Holocaust, is the editor of a volume of essays, Traumatizing Theory: The Cultural Politics of Affect in and beyond Psychoanalysis (forthcoming, The Other Press, 2006), and has guest-edited a special issue of Cultural Critique on "Trauma and Its Cultural Aftereffects" (2000) and an issue of Parallax on the concept of "visceral reason" (2005). Her current project titled The Entropics of Discourse: Climates of Loss in Contemporary Criticism reflects on figures of loss and melancholy in recent cultural theory.
