AbstractIn 1984 the Labour government in New Zealand began a wide‐ranging process of reform with the objective of achieving a sustainable improvement in economic performance. The breadth and rapidity with which deregulation, tax reform, and privatisation were implemented has attracted widespread interest. The expected improvement in macroeconomic performance, however, has not yet been realised. This article describes some background to the policy shift, and focuses on macroeconomic aspects of the reforms. It argues that while many improvements in microeconomic resource allocation have been made, the interaction between monetary, fiscal and wages policies has contributed substantially to the present high cost of structural change in New Zealand.

The greatest works of economists have the potential to provide insights on current economic developments and policy challenges long after they are written. This book seeks to investigate the evolution of the core ideas and policy recommendations of the major schools of economic thought, and to present and critically evaluate those theories that have survived over time and can inform us about current developments and economic policies. The theories of major economists are presented and used to promote an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the economy and to address contemporary problems and issues. In addition, the book explores the fascinating dynamics of shifting from one school of economic thought to another. Each chapter concludes with a summary, critical remarks, a set of questions for reflection and discussion, and recommendations for further reading.

PurposeThis study aims to close a gap in the relevant literature by investigating the causal linkage between financial risk (FR) and economic risk (ER) in China for the period 1985Q1–2018Q4.Design/methodology/approachBased on the aim of the present study, Toda Yamamoto causality and wavelet coherence tests are used to capture the relationship between FR and ER in China.FindingsThe findings from wavelet coherence reveal that there is feedback causality between FR and ER in China at different frequencies and different periods between 1985 and 2018. The consistency of the findings from wavelet coherence is confirmed by the outcomes of Toda Yamamoto causality test.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough this study provides strong and consistent empirical findings for China, further studies should consider advancing the argument by focusing on different emerging markets.Practical implicationsResults are crucial for policy decision-making and can be used by researchers and macro-economic policymakers to take an action, if necessary, by implementing more appropriate or alternative economic and financial decisions.Originality/valueTo the best of the author's knowledge, this relationship in China has not been comprehensively explored by using newly developed econometrics techniques. Therefore, this study is likely to open a debate about the literature as the study concludes with a discussion on short- and long-run implications for policymakers in China.
