Much of the meaning we commonly attach to the term 'revolution' grows out of our image of the French Revolution.1 The social upheavals we associate with the latter have been deeply etched in the history of thought by Taine's accounts of bloodshed and terror, and later generations have only broken the spell with difficulty.

Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich exemplarisch mit Phänomenen des Wandels, denen das Christentum gegenwärtig unterliegt und leitet daraus Thesen zum Verständnis der interreligiösen Situation ab. Als Elemente dieses Wandels charakterisiert er eine "Tradierungskrise des Glaubens", die mit einem allgemein diagnostizierten Traditionsbruch und einer "Verkündigungskrise" der Kirche zusammenhänge. Nach jüngeren Umfragen bestreiten fast 90 Prozent der Christen einen Monopolanspruch des Christentums, die einzig wahre Religion zu sein. Die Bereitschaft zu religiösem Pluralismus führe aber nicht notwendigerweise zu aufgeklärtem Verhalten. Sie stärke auch die Sektenbildung. Die Beispiele der Theosophen, der Unitarier oder der Scientology-Kirche verwiesen schon früh auf einen Umbruch im religiösen Verhalten, der sich dann auch in der Hinwendung zu einem "postchristlichen Milieu" und zur hinduistischen und buddhistischen Mission bemerkbar machte. Wichtig sei in dieser Situation, daß das Christentum zu einer neuen Identität und Transparenz in Sprache, Sache und Lebensart finde. Das Gespräch der Religionen dürfe keine Sache weniger Intellektueller bleiben, es müßten vielmehr Methoden gefunden werden, wie die Angst vor dem anderen zu überwinden sei. (pka)
It is now time to try to pull together some of the themes and questions raised by the contributors to this book. My comments are not intended to settle controversies but merely to offer one more or less coherent opinion. My purpose is to help some readers to see the book as a whole. Other readers will need no help and may find my comments either wrong or nearly self‐evident.
Throughout history, manuscripts have been made and used for religious, artistic, and scientific performances, and this practice continues in most cultures today. By focusing on the role manuscripts have in different kinds of performances, this volume contributes to the evolving field of investigating written artefacts and their functions. The collected essays regard manuscripts as points of intersection where textual, material, and performative aspects converge. The contributors analyse manuscripts in their forms and functions as well as their positioning in the performances for which they were made. These aspects unfold across the volume's three sections, examining how manuscripts are (1) used backstage, for preparing and giving instructions for performances; (2) taken onstage, contributing to the enactment of performances; and (3) performers in their own right, producing an effect on the audience. Maria Grazia Martino and her contributing authors highlight the different solutions found by European countries with different ecclesiastical law systems, different distributions of Christian denominations and different percentages of Muslim immigrants: Germany, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Italy and Greece. Churches and religious communities are actors from civil society. The state sets the framework for their activities, first and foremost by formal legal acts in ecclesiastical law. Die Geschichte der Bahai-Religion beginnt im Jahre 1844, einer Zeit, in der die Grundgedanken der Aufklärung ideengeschichtlich allgemein bekannt waren, wie z. B. Gleichheit und Brüderlichkeit aller Menschen, die zentrale Rolle des Verstandes und der Vernunft bei der menschlichen Urteilsbildung sowie das Plädoyer für die Toleranz gegenüber anderen Nationen und Glaubensrichtungen. Dennoch war die Praxis von diesen Idealen weit entfernt, die sich erneut in den Prinzipien der Bahai-Religion widerspiegeln. Als eine unabhängige Offenbarungsreligion erhebt sie den Anspruch, das jüngste Glied in einer Kette von Gottesboten zu sein. Die Bahai-Lehre, die heute vor allem in Indien, Afrika sowie Süd- und Nordamerika verbreitet ist, stimmt in ihren ethischen und mystischen Kernaussagen in vielen Punkten mit anderen Hochreligionen überein, postuliert aber darüber hinaus zahlreiche Gebote und Prinzipien, die aus neuzeitlicher Sicht bedeutend und für das friedliche Zusammenleben der Menschen und Nationen in einer globalisierten Welt unabdingbar sind. Der vorliegende Artikel beschäftigt sich nach der Erläuterung der Grundprinzipien und einem kurzen historischen Überblick über die Bahai-Religion in zwei Abschnitten mit den Elementen, welche sowohl die Toleranz gegenüber Andersgläubigen als auch die innerhalb der Bahai-Gemeinde gewährleisten.
