The three main powers of northeast Asia all went through changes of leadership in the year to mid-2013. China's carefully prepared transfer of power to Xi Jinping was accomplished after considerable factional manoeuvring within the Chinese Communist Party. In Japan, the Liberal Democratic Party returned to power after three years, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe embarked on an ambitious project to revive the economy. A conservative leader was also elected in South Korea, where Park Geun-hye became the country's first female president. Her government was immediately subjected to a wave of bellicose abuse from North Korea, where new leader Kim Jong-un was seeking to make a mark both at home and abroad. Relations between neighbours remained tense, with China and Japan especially at odds over islands in the East China Sea. Long-running disputes over islands in the South China Sea were also no closer to resolution. Myanmar continued its process of reintegration into the international community.
