Multidomain/multichannel sequence analysis has become widely used in social science research to uncover the underlying relationships between two or more observed trajectories in parallel. For example, life-course researchers use multidomain sequence analysis to study the parallel unfolding of multiple life-course domains. In this article, the authors conduct a critical review of the approaches most used in multidomain sequence analysis. The parallel unfolding of trajectories in multiple domains is typically analyzed by building a joint multidomain typology and by examining how domain-specific sequence patterns combine with one another within the multidomain groups. The authors identify four strategies to construct the joint multidomain typology: proceeding independently of domain costs and distances between domain sequences, deriving multidomain costs from domain costs, deriving distances between multidomain sequences from within-domain distances, and combining typologies constructed for each domain. The second and third strategies are prevalent in the literature and typically proceed additively. The authors show that these additive procedures assume between-domain independence, and they make explicit the constraints these procedures impose on between-multidomain costs and distances. Regarding the fourth strategy, the authors propose a merging algorithm to avoid scarce combined types. As regards the first strategy, the authors demonstrate, with a real example based on data from the Swiss Household Panel, that using edit distances with data-driven costs at the multidomain level (i.e., independent of domain costs) remains easily manageable with more than 200 different multidomain combined states. In addition, the authors introduce strategies to enhance visualization by types and domains.

The knowledge that has dominated the globe for more than a century first emerged in the early modern period in Europe, and subsequently became globalized through colonialism. Despite the historical and cultural specificity of its origins, modern Western knowledge was thought to have transcended its particularities such that, unlike pre-modern and non-Western knowledges, it was 'universal,' or true for all times and places. Deriving its critical energies principally from postcolonial theory, 'Beyond Reason' breaks new ground to argue that the assumed 'truths' of social scientific reason are products of the specific circumstances of Western modernity, and thus that the social sciences are a parochial form of knowledge spuriously claiming universality.

The Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - have made impressive progress since the early 1990s. They have now almost completed their preparations for accession to the EU. Most elements of labour market and social policy have been thoroughly reformed over the past decade. However, several difficult policy questions need to be addressed in response to changing economic conditions. This OECD Policy Review analyses the key issues facing each country given its specific economic and social trends. It draws both positive and negative policy lessons from OECD experience. It also identifies Baltic policy initiatives, such as pension reforms, which are more advanced than those adopted in most OECD countries.

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to show that the management of social relations involves specific forms of intellectual labour. An Australian study explores this through life‐history interviews.Design/methodology/approachCareer‐ and life‐history interviews were conducted with 16 intellectual workers whose professions involve the management of social relations. Both individual case studies and group analysis were conducted.FindingsIn some situations this labour is carried out by a collective intellectual increasingly integrated with information technology. Several modes of the organization of knowledge can be specified. Extensive links with global society are found, yet few respondents make global society itself part of their object of knowledge. Participants perform classic functions of assembling and reticulating knowledge, and some have high levels of training, yet tend to refuse an "intellectual" identity.Originality/valueLocal practice tilts away from ivory‐tower models of social knowledge and towards supportive engagement in global market society. Social management is thus partly integrated with neoliberalism; yet among the partly residualized groups of intellectual workers some indications of opposition remain. Knowledge itself therefore seems to be a focus of tension.

Social support and gender are important issues for understanding Chinese internal migrants. This study attempts to explore the social support conditions and needs of Chinese internal migrant women. Fifteen migrant women living in Beijing were interviewed about the types and sources of social support they received and needed. They reported receiving various types of support mainly from informal ties, but rarely from formal support networks. They identified the needs for social support clustered on instrumental, informational, and emotional support. Moreover, although they reported willingness to seek formal support, they expressed concerns for the credibility and availability of possible formal support.

• Summary: This article draws on the findings of two research studies: the first a systematic research review and survey of current education practice in teaching law to social workers; the second a `user review' involving focus groups with a range of stakeholders in practice learning for social work students. • Findings: Although law is recognized as an important component of social work practice, much of the focus on how social workers learn about law has, to date, been upon classroom-based learning. Law often has a low profile in practice, despite the rich opportunities it offers. • Applications : Building from evidence of poor alignment between classroom learning and practice, the authors present an analysis of the barriers and opportunities that exist for enhancing the profile of law in the practice arena and conclude with indicators for the development of good pedagogic practice and improved practitioner confidence.

AbstractThe extant literature has generally overlooked the qualitative differences in corporate social responsibility (CSR) domains. Inspired by this gap, we first propose and justify a new classification of CSR domains (including the must‐be, one‐dimensional and attractive domains) based on the Kano model from the perspective of consumer demand and then experimentally test consumers' differentiated responses to different CSR domains moderated by consumers' CSR perceptions in the cases of both CSR strengths and CSR lapses. Using a sample of adult consumers in China, we find that in both cases, the influences of the three CSR domains on consumers' company evaluation and purchase intention are different, and such influences are moderated by consumers' CSR perceptions and show characteristics of asymmetry. The results not only support asymmetric and nonlinear consumer responses to CSR domains but also provide a novel explanation for such phenomena.

The violation of professional boundaries represents the most troubling of ethics transgressions. Encompassing sexual activities, dual relationships, and poor clinical practices, this area includes not only clearly illegal or unethical behaviors, but also actions that may be unwise only in the context in which they occurred. This article presents the findings of a recent study that examined ethics complaints against social workers and revealed that 56.1% of the cases in which there were violations involved some form of boundary infraction. The body of literature on boundary violations is examined in light of these findings and recommendations are offered for enhancing practitioner education, supervision, and self-awareness to reduce the incidence of these ethics breaches.

There is a growing interest in firms' adoption of ethical and social marketing approaches among academics and practitioners alike. Ethical Marketing is the application of ethics into the marketing process, and Social Marketing is a concept that seeks to influence a target audience for the greater social good. Ethical and Social Marketing in Asia examines this so-far unexplored area, investigating why differing cultures and consumption behaviours require different emphasis in different markets. The diversity of the Asian countries provides a perplexing environment to the development and management of ethical and social marketing. The belief that bottom line profits is enough for a company, is often not favourably viewed by Asian countries emphasising collective, social and long term benefits for the people and country. Due to these interesting characteristics and complexities, the study of ethical and social marketing in Asia is a timely topic. The first chapters introduce Ethical Marketing in Asia, followed by case studies of how the approach is used across 14 diverse economies, geographically based on 'clusters'; North East, (China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea), South East (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Indonesia) and South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh). Though the effectiveness of social marketing has been proven in various areas, it has captured scant research attention of tourism scholars. This article analyzes the social marketing characteristics of a number of tourism-related projects that have been funded by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Vietnam. The importance of NGOs in Vietnam's development process is highlighted. A search strategy is described where some terms and phrases are combined to identify tourism-related development projects. Forty-five projects were found and assessed against a set of six social marketing benchmarks. Twenty-one projects match all the criteria, where different evaluation measures are noted. Significantly, no project labeled itself in terms of social marketing attributes. The social marketing label is thus not necessarily effective in identifying social marketing interventions in tourism-related projects. Despite some caveats, the article indicates that social marketing may be effective in promoting behavior change for sustainable tourism development and poverty alleviation.

Summary Meaning in life is an important element in the context of the workplace. The purpose of this study was to explore how certain factors, namely: subjective well-being, professional quality of life (compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, burnout), loneliness, personal work-related subjection to violence, fear of being subjected to violence, age, parental status, and marital status can predict meaning in life among social workers in Israel. An extensive battery of online questionnaires was administered to 501 participants. A hierarchical regression analysis was used to examine the association between a series of independent variables and meaning in life among social workers. Findings The findings suggest that age, subjective well-being, compassion satisfaction and fear of being personally subjected to violence were positively associated with meaning in life. However, loneliness and burnout were negatively associated with meaning in life. The other variables were not significantly associated with meaning in life. Applications Social work educators and managers must consider the importance of meaning in life when developing social care curricula and policies. Social workers must be aware of the importance of enhancing their sense of meaning in life for increasing their job satisfaction as well as improving the service provided to their clients.
