The film is one of few examples of political documentaries produced in Poland after 1989. It is not limited to merely outlining the political argument over General Jaruzelski's decision to impose martial law. Although it concerns events in Polish history, it is not a historical documentary, as it brings forth present-day political conflicts that have arisen around historical events. Trying to reconstruct this current political argument, Zmarz-Koczanowicz reaches for a method developed in the 1970s by the so-called "Kraków School" led by Krzysztof Kieślowski. ^e "talking heads" method was meant to help documentary filmmakers in the Polish People's Republic reach what the person in the street actually thought and avoid the distortions of propaganda. For Kieślowski, however, the overriding aim was conciliation and an attempt to understand both sides of the political barricade - the authorities and the vox popu- li. His attitude, according to the terminology suggested by Chantal Mouffe, was a post-political one striving for an agreement through a rational dialogue. Zmarz-Koczanowicz's aim, however, is different: she is intent on showing a clash of different hegemonies that do not strive for consensus. Their agonistic argument, played out in the political register, rather than a moral one, is a guarantee, according to this Belgian philosopher of politics, that democracy will continue to exist.

O presente artigo discorre sobre algumas das possibilidades de análise qualitativa de imagens, em especial no que tange ao Método Documentário desenvolvido por Ralf Bohnsack. Baseado em uma comunicação apresentada no Deutsch-brasilianische Tagung zur qualitativen Forschung realizado em Campinas, Berlin e Göttingen, o texto concentra-se na introdução ao referido método e em seu emprego empírico, especialmente nas áreas de História e Ciência Política. Sendo o estudo de fontes imagéticas um campo ainda pouco explorado nessas duas disciplinas, o método documentário vem suprir uma carência metodológica no trato desses documentos. O seu emprego nesse sentido é demonstrado no artigo através de um exemplo de análise. A imagem selecionada – uma charge do semanário alemão Der Stürmer (1923-45) – não apenas cumpre esse objetivo como também abre novas discussões sobre a natureza da imagem e de seus produtores. A partir dessa análise, o método pode ser, de maneira abrangente, exposto e avaliado.

Die Tätigkeit von Physiotherapeutinnen und Physiotherapeuten wird durch den Bedeutungszuwachs chronischer Erkrankungen und durch gesundheits- und berufspolitische Entwicklungen beeinflusst. Dabei zeigt sich, dass sie ihren Versorgungsauftrag immer seltener auf die unmittelbaren Kontaktzeiten mit den Patientinnen und Patienten beschränken können. Deshalb müssen sie auf eine Kombination von direkter Behandlung (Hands-on-Physiotherapy) und begleitender Edukation (Hands-off-Physiotherapy) zurückgreifen, um die Versorgungsziele erreichen zu können. Allerdings fehlt es an Konzepten, die edukatives Handeln reflektieren, methodisch und interventionslogisch begründen und auf eine theoretisch-konzeptionelle Basis stellen. Die vorliegende Dissertation versucht Ansätze zu liefern, mit denen man diesem Desiderat begegnen kann. Am Beispiel von Kinder mit lebenslimitierenden Erkrankungen und ihren Eltern sollten die Erfahrungen bei der Übernahme physiotherapeutischer Versorgungsleistungen erhoben, analysiert, theoretisch reflektiert und für eine Konzeptentwicklung verwendet werden. In einem ersten Arbeitsschritt wurde in zwei systematischen Literaturrecherchen der Erkenntnisstand zur Instruktion als einer edukativen Interventionsstrategie für die exemplarische Zielgruppe der Kinder mit lebenslimitierenden Erkrankungen und ihren Familien aufbereitet. Danach wurde eine qualitativ-empirische Studie durchgeführt, wobei für die Datenerhebung semistrukturierte qualitative Interviews verwendet wurden. Befragt wurden dabei Eltern (n = 15), deren Kinder an einer lebenslimitierenden Erkrankung leiden und die in der Häuslichkeit physiotherapeutische Versorgungsleistungen erbringen. Die Datenauswertung erfolgte anhand des Rekonstruktionsverfahrens der dokumentarischen Methode nach Bohnsack. In einem weiteren Arbeitsschritt wurden die empirischen Ergebnisse unter Bezugnahme zur Theorie der Selbstregulation von Albert Bandura theoretisch reflektiert. Source at http://www.alphavillejournal.com/. ; The article considers one dominant tendency of independent filmmaking, and its impact on the treatment of the refugee (broadly conceived): the application of contemporary documentary methods to both fiction and nonfiction works. The goal is a preliminary exploration of the complex, context-sensitive political effects of the approach, sometimes dubbed the "documentary style", as resistance of (and/or submission to) the hegemonic global-nationalist order. To this end, the paper investigates specifically how such filmmaking efforts may—or may not—redirect the phenomenological vehicle of imagination away from narrow nationalist imaginaries towards a broader humanist identification and emotional (and normative) investment in the stranger or "the other" per se. The focus is on two works in particular, Another News Story (Orban Wallace, 2017) and Before Summer Ends (Avant la fin de l'été, Maryam Goormaghtigh, 2017), identifying how the filmmakers' broadly pluralistic techniques help avoid the potentially dehumanising pitfalls of more didactic approaches, but also generate their own potential limitations. While the slackening of the subject's categorical—and the plot's narrative—shape may be liberating, it also risks a phenomenological disconnection on the part of the potentially interested spectator. The cognitive effects—including impediments to memory and recall—may thus weaken the work's potential as a vehicle of cultural awareness and social identification.

The growing presence of subjects narrating their lived experiences in documentaries implies their involvement in the making of their own histories. This textbook aims to give an introduction to the use of documentary sources in social research. It is designed to be a companion to courses in research methods in the social sciences and history and a reference text for those beginning research on documentary sources. There is a growing body of literature within the humanities and social sciences that is directly critical of the documentary tradition's treatment and use of still and moving images as realistic data. The documentary tradition claims that it is possible to visually document social scenes with cameras. Postmodernism, poststructuralism, critical theory and related traditions argue that still and moving images amount to representations, their critique of realism. As instruments, cameras are open to a variety of uses ranging from the scientific to the artistic in orientation. Such uses of cameras comprise representational work. Following Garfinkel, this article suggests that the documentary method of sense making is employed in numerous practical situations. This article commences with an overview of the documentary tradition and then offers a brief case study of certain of these principles in operation within the practical work of the police and road users on public highways. Public highways and traffic flows along them are visually available social arrangements. Within police work that involves the regulation and management of traffic flows, stored images of vehicles can serve as documentary evidence of traffic violations. In this particular context and more generally on the highways, road users treat objects such as road signs and related items of roadside furniture, including cameras and road markings, as documents of some, for all practical purposes, real states of affairs. Road users make sense of the stream of visual information encountered as an ongoing practical accomplishment.

Abstract. Portrayals of suicide in the media are controversial because they may impact on suicide rates and methods. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the broadcast of a television documentary wherein an adolescent girl is interviewed about her suicide plan and subsequently dies by suicide. National suicide rates during the 8 weeks prior to the program and the 4 weeks following it were compared to the same periods in the previous year. There was no significant difference in the rates of completed and attempted suicides before and after the program. There was a shift toward the method used in the film after the broadcast, but it was found to be nonspecific to that year. A significant decrease was noted in the mean age of suicide attempters in the last promotional week prior to the broadcast compared to the previous year (p = .032). These preliminary findings suggest that the repeated televised promotion of a documentary on suicide may raise the risk of suicide in vulnerable populations. Further investigations in bigger populations are needed.

The article considers a genre of the documentary that is nature documentaries, dedicated to wildlife of our Planet, covering the ornithology, oceanology and botany sciences. Certain specific cinematographic, linguistic codes and area affiliation are the key prerequisites for nature documentary to be considered as a sub-genre. The article highlights the lexical and syntactic components in the text of a popular science documentary along with some expressive elements (intonation, face expression and gestures). The manifestation of the above mentioned features of a nature documentary is associated with the type of audiovisual text. The author of the article proposes a typology of audiovisual texts of popular science documentaries, which is based on various methods of narration and presentation of material to the recipient. She distinguishes three types of nature documentary texts: 1) off-screen narration text; 2) a combination of the off-screen narration and on-screen commentator's text; 3) off-screen narration, on-screen commentator's text and on-screen interview text.

The software engineering community is concerned with improvements in existing methods and development of new and better methods. The research approaches applied to take on this challenge have hitherto focused heavily on the formal and specifying aspect of the method. This has been done for good reasons, because formalizations are the means in software projects to predict, plan, and regulate the development efforts. As formalizations have been successfully developed new challenges have been recognized. The human and social role in software development has been identified as the next area that needs to be addressed. Organizational problems need to be solved if continued progress is to be made in the field. The social element is today a little explored area in software engineering. Following with the increased interest in the social element it has been identified a need of new research approaches suitable for the study of human behaviour. The one sided focus on formalizations has had the consequence that concepts and explanation models available in the community are one sided related in method discourses. Definition of method is little explored in the software engineering community. In relation to identified definitions of method the social appears to blurring. Today the software engineering community lacks powerful concepts and explanation models explaining the social element. This thesis approaches the understanding of the social element in software engineering by applying ethnomethodologically informed ethnography and ethnography. It is demonstrated how the ethnographic inquiry contributes to software engineering. Ethnography is also combined with an industrial cooperative method development approach. The results presented demonstrate how industrial external and internal socio political contingencies both hindered a method implementation, as well as solved what the method was targeted to do. It is also presented how project members' method deployment - as a social achievement is played out in practice. In relation to this latter contribution it is provided a conceptual apparatus and explanation model borrowed from social science, The Documentary method of interpretation. This model addresses core features in the social element from a natural language point of view that is of importance in method engineering. This model provides a coherent complement to an existing method definition emphasizing formalizations. This explanation model has also constituted the underpinning in research methodology that made possible the concrete study results.
