Abstract
Particulate matter (PM) is considered an intrauterine toxin that can cross the blood-placental barrier and circulate in fetal blood, affecting fetal development, and implicating placental and intrauterine inflammation, and oxidative damage. However, the relationship between PM exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes is still unclear and our aim was to systematically review toxicological evidence on the link between PM exposure during pregnancy and the development of gestational diabetes mellitus or hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia. PubMed and Science Direct were searched until January 2022. Of the 204 studies identified, 168 were excluded. The remaining articles were assessed in full-text, and after evaluation, 27 were included in the review. Most of the studies showed an association between PM exposure and gestational hypertension, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, and gestational diabetes mellitus. These results should be interpreted with caution due to the heterogeneity of baseline concentrations, which ranged from 3.3 μg/m3 to 85.9 μg/m3 and from 21.8 μg/m3 to 92.2 μg/m3, respectively for PM2.5 and PM10. Moreover, critical exposure periods were not consistent among studies, with five out of ten observational studies reporting the second trimester as the critical period for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and ten out of twelve observational studies reporting the first or second trimester as the critical period for gestational diabetes mellitus. Overall, the findings support an association between PM exposure during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes, highlighting the need for further research to identify the critical exposure periods and underlying mechanisms.

Der internationale Klimadiskurs sowie die diversen Problemlösungsstrategien zur Überwindung der Klimakrise sind nach wie vor stark geprägt von einer beachtlichen Technologiegläubigkeit, die die Thematisierung der sozialen Dimension der Klimaproblematik erheblich erschwert. Der Diskurs wird bestimmt durch ein Sprechen über Effizienz und ökologische Modernisierung, in dem Fragen der sozialen Gerechtigkeit - insbesondere der Geschlechtergerechtigkeit - kaum zu vernehmen sind. Der Beitrag leitet in den Sammelband ein, der sich mit feministischen Perspektiven auf Klima, Klimawandel und Klimapolitik beschäftigt. Der Beitrag führt in die Thematik ein und wendet sich dabei zunächst dem Diskurs zu Geschlechterfragen in der Klimapolitik zu und skizziert anschließend Gerechtigkeitsfragen in der globalen Klimapolitik. Schließlich beschreibt der Beitrag feministische Zugänge zum Mensch-Natur-Verhältnis und erläutert die Beiträge des Bandes. (ICB2)

Background: Foodborne nematodiasis are caused by the ingestion of food contaminated by helminths. In Europe, these diseases are present in all countries. Objectives: To review the available data on epidemiology and management of foodborne nematodiasis in the European Union, detect any trends and determine the possible causes of the observed changes. Methods: A review of available literature published between 2000 and 2016 was conducted. Results: Out of 1523 cases described in the literature, 1493 cases were autochthonous and 30 cases were imported. The detected parasites were Toxocara spp (34.7%), Ascaris lumbricoides (27.1%), Trichinella spp (21.9%), Anisakis spp (15.5%) and Angiostrongylus cantonensis (0.8%). Conclusions: Foodborne nematodiasis remains a public health challenge for the European Union. Autochthonous cases of nematodiasis present the greatest health risk within the European Union. Abstract
Low-frequency electromagnetic fields have grown exponentially in recent years due to technological development and modernization. The World Health Organization (WHO)/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), and recent studies have investigated the association between exposure to electromagnetic fields in parents and possible health effects in children, especially the development of tumours of the central nervous system (CNS). The objective of this systematic review was to collate all evidence on the relationship between parental occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields and the development of CNS cancer in children and to evaluate this association. This review was prepared according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were searched from January 1990 to April 2021. The search was conducted using the following search string: "occupational" AND "child" AND "electromagnetic" AND "cancer". Seventeen articles met our inclusion criteria: 13 case-control studies, two cohort studies, and 2 meta-analyses. Most of the studies showed several methodological weaknesses that limited their results. Due to a lack of consistency regarding the outcome as well as the heterogeneity in the reviewed studies, the body of evidence for the effects of parental exposure to electromagnetic fields is not clear. Methodological heterogeneity in the way that studies were conducted could be responsible for the lack of consistency in the findings. Overall, the body of evidence allows no conclusion on the relationship between parental exposure to electromagnetic fields and the occurrence of CNS tumours in children.

Surface treatments, especially hydrophobic agents to prevent water ingress and consolidants able to fill decay-induced cracks, are often proposed as a method for preserving stone cultural heritage, however its use to protect concrete heritage is much less common. New products, specifically designed for concrete, have been developed. These products are based on alkoxysilanes that interact directly with the products of portland cement (OPC) hydration (essentially Ca(OH) and C-S-H) to generate additional C-S-H gel. This study assesses the effect of an impregnation treatment, based on alkosysilanes, on artificially decayed cement mortars, in terms of product penetration depth, changes in the porosity of mortars and changes in its mechanical strengths. Reduced porosity and enhanced mechanical strength attested to treatment efficacy. Substrate porosity and pore size distribution were not the only factors found to condition treatment effectiveness, however, mineralogical changes caused by the deterioration processes (such as the presence or absence of portlandite, or the presence of salts) modify the sol gelling time and the substrate surface energy, impacting treatment penetration depth. ; This work has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 - Research and Innovation Framework Programme under grant agreement No 760858 (Innovaconcrete project). Tetraethoxysilane or tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), also known as ethyl silicate, traditionally applied to consolidate stone, has recently begun to be used on Portland cement mortars and concrete with promising results. TEOS not only fills the pores in the substrate, but reacts with the cement favouring the precipitation of new C-S-H gels that densify and strengthen the materials. This study explored the effectiveness of new TEOS-based treatments bearing nanosilica (NS) or nanolime (NC) and their compatibility with cement materials found in the built heritage, given the participation of the various products in the pozzolanic reactions that may induce additional C-S-H gel. The physical and hydric properties (mechanical strength, porosity, surface gloss and colour, water vapour permeability and low pressure water absorption) of a Portland cement mortar were determined before and after applying the consolidants. Cement paste leaching and concomitant decalcification is a common cause of concrete structure deterioration. Such alterations entail microstructural changes that condition concrete durability. This study analysed those changes in cement pastes exposed to accelerated decalcification, layer-by-layer, from the surface in contact with the leaching agent, 6 M NH4NO3, to the unaltered area. The microstructural changes were analysed with BSEM, MIP and BET whilst the mineralogical and nanostructural alterations in each layer were assessed with XRD, FTIR, 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR and BSD. Decalcification affected not only portlandite and CSH gel, but also the anhydrous clinker and ettringite, inducing major micro- and nano-structural changes, particularly in the two layers closest to the leaching agent. CSH gel decalcification was more intense in the outer layers where long chain gels co-existed with silicon rich gels. BDS, in turn, revealed differences between the amount of bound water in the surface interfacing with the leaching agent and in the leaching front. More specifically, larger numbers of water molecules were tightly bound to silanol groups in the outer, whereas hydroxyl group distribution was more orderly in the inner layers. ; This study was funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No. 760858. Trabajo presentado al 15th International Congress on the Chemistry of Cement (ICCC), celebrado en Praga (República Checa) del 16 al 20 de septiembre de 2019. ; In the search for new eco-cements it has been found that ternesite (2C2S·CaSO4), which has traditionally been regarded as a hydraulically inactive phase, can be activated by aluminum hidroxides (AH3) and some calcium aluminates. This research, in particular, studies the role of ternesite on C3A hydration, with and without gypsum. After laboratory synthesis, C3A was blended with ternesite, gypsum and ternesite+gypsum. The early hydration of those blends was monitored with isothermal conduction calorimetry at 25 °C for 7 days. The resulting pastes were analysed with XRD, FTIR and DTA/TG. Additionally, mixtures of C3AH6 and ternesite in water were prepared in order to study their compatibility. The calorimetric results showed a higher total heat per gram of aluminate in the sample containing gypsum and ternesite than in the sample C3A+ternesite. Aluminum hydroxide (AH3) has recently been shown to be able to activate hydration in ternesite, a phase found in some calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements. This study explored the capacity of a number of calcium aluminates (C3A, C12A7, CA and C4A3) to activate ternesite hydraulic reactivity. After laboratory synthesis, the aluminates were blended with ternesite at a ratio of 1:2 and their hydration was monitored with isothermal conduction calorimetry for 7 days at 25 °C. The resulting pastes were analysed with XRD, FTIR and DTA. The presence of ternesite in the pastes altered the aluminate heat flow curves, shortening the induction period and bringing the reaction peak forward, an indication of hastened hydration. Since that reaction is affected by heat, its variations with curing temperature (25, 40 and 65 °C) were also analysed. The findings showed that while C3S hydration was accelerated by both nSA and higher curing temperature, the former impacted the reaction more intensely.
