Scholars often treat immigrants from the same country as a monolithic group, but intranational ethnicity is usually associated with distinctive premigration backgrounds and migration experiences and plays a role in shaping immigrant adjustment and incorporation in the host country. The authors use census data to distinguish ethnic Chinese from the Vietnamese national group to analyze educational heterogeneity across immigration generations. The results show that first-generation Chinese Vietnamese exhibit much lower levels of education than their Vietnamese counterparts, but this disparity vanishes by the 1.5 generation. The authors also find that both Vietnamese subgroups contribute to the second-generation convergence with Chinese Americans, but Chinese Vietnamese are able to overcome disadvantages more quickly and have slightly higher educational achievement than ethnic Vietnamese. Our case study illustrates how ethnicity and national origin can be disaggregated using nationally representative data and how this approach can provide unique insights into immigration studies in general.

AbstractHow can images be used as an expressive, yet clearly limited, tool to represent "the other" in ethnographic films? Based on the objectives of visual anthropology and visual communication, this article analyzes the four presentational traditions of meaning construction. These traditions have been incorporated into the audio-visual communication context to illustrate the similarities or differences between ethnographic films and ethnographic texts in terms of traditions, structures, features, and limitations. Through the analysis of the four traditions, the relationships between visual presentation and text writing, visual patterns and communication concepts, and visual potentials and ethnographic films have been fully examined. In the context of Chinese ethnographic films, the four presentational traditions have been well showcased and developed. These works, in their different contexts, have constituted a meaningful visual text system of contemporary Chinese anthropology.

Abstract
Translation semiotics studies the transformation of signs in translation, which generally involves semiosis, sign behavior, sign relations, semiotic hierarchy, intersemiosis, semiotic function, and semiotic conservation. This paper attempts to explore, from these seven dimensions, the disciplinary essence of TS and foresees the development of this burgeoning discipline as a branch of semiotics.

Abstract
Semiotics as a science of signs originated from Europe and America where France, the USA and Russia are acknowledged as the three epicenters for semiotics studies. Comparatively, in China, the conscious study of semiotics as an independent discipline started much later; yet, the traditional Chinese culture is imbued with bountiful semiotic resources. In response to the prospects of semiotics studies around the globe, how should China, with its deep-rooted traditional culture and unique semiotic resources, integrate itself with the world as a powerhouse in semiotics studies? How can it gain its access to the academic discourse of semiotics? What should it do to establish a school of semiotics studies featuring Chinese characteristics and to contribute to the world's semiotics studies? These questions, which still remain to be answered, concern not only the process and progress of semiotics studies in China but the historic mission of Chinese semiotics as well. The paper highlights 12 semiotic spheres unique to China and six aspects of the academic philosophy of Chinese semiotics, hereby calling for long-term and sustained efforts to advance the progress of semiotics studies in China. And it is the authors' belief that China's bountiful semiotic resources and relevant research achievements will be a contribution to the world's semiotics studies.

State-owned enterprises (SOEs) have increasingly engaged in cross-border acquisitions. However, they face challenges related to regulatory approval in host countries, especially when they aim to acquire companies with rich R&D resources. Regulatory debates around the legitimacy of SOE acquisitions prolong acquisition duration and may also prevent acquisitions from being completed.

This paper establishes and evaluates the efficiency of three restrictive measures adopted by the government to contain housing prices: restricted bank loan ( xiandai), restricted sale price ( xianjia) and restricted housing purchase ( xiangou). Based on the data envelopment analysis non-controllable variable model, the efficiency of the three measures to mediating housing prices among 35 major cities are examined. It is found that xiangou is more efficient than xianjia and xiandai to achieve stabilising goals in the housing market. The findings of this research could provide the government with a benchmark to estimate the possible outcome of different restrictive measures containing property prices, in the context of the global overflow of liquidity over the past decade.

AbstractHousehold food insecurity in the United States has reached its highest levels to date. As public and private initiatives have emerged to help improve diets by fostering access to food, the availability of more food stores may result in lower levels of food insecurity. In this article, we assess the relationship between adult food insecurity and food store density in metropolitan areas of the United States. We find that while small grocery/convenience stores show a mitigating effect on adult food insecurity across different samples of households, the effects of large supermarkets/grocery stores and supercenters vary. We also find that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participation and food access can have a simultaneously beneficial effect in reducing adult food insecurity. Implications for policies aiming to improve food security by fostering access to food stores are discussed.

Objective: There is concern about the extent to which consumers will accept genetically modified (GM) foods in China. Existing studies are mostly inconsistent and sometimes confusing. Although China produced and consumed the biggest amount of GM crops and other derived products, there were only limited studies about Chinese public acceptance for GM foods. This review was aimed to explore the public acceptance for GM food in China and reasons for acceptance or against for GM food. Methods: Literature were retrieved from Google Scholar, Pubmed and CNKI using key words of "genetically modified food" ( OR "GM food" OR "GMO Food" OR "GM foods") combined with "acceptance" (OR "attitude" OR "willingness to buy" ). Consumers' knowledge and understanding about GM food, attitudes and acceptance for GM food as well as factors or reasons associated with their attitudes or acceptance were synthesized. Result: Of 1000 literature retrieved from the specified data sources, 20 were eligible to be included in this study. Generally, knowledge and understanding of GM food was limited among Chinese consumers. However, acceptance for GM food were generally positive among the Chinese consumers, around 60%-80% according to the studies included in this review. Factors associated with acceptance for GM food included price of GM food, respondents' demographics, government attitudes and media coverage. Conclusion: The Chinese government should better communicate the risk and benefits associated GM food to improve acceptance of GM food. Communication should target subgroups of consumers to improve their knowledge and perceived benefits of GM food. Labeling of GM food should also be implemented in China to help the consumers to make a better choice. ; published_or_final_version ; Public Health ; Master ; Master of Public Health
