The Arab-Israeli conflict was the main issue distinguishing the 33 parties that ran in Israel's February 2009 parliamentary election. The three phases of the three-month election campaign resulted in the centrist Kodima Party taking the most seats (28) & the right-wing Likud Party capturing 27 seats. All six right-wing parties recommended that Benjamin Netanyahu be nominated as prime minister & President Peres asked him to form the new government on 20 February. [Copyright Elsevier Ltd.]
