Halberstam describes her work on the politics of transgender biography, noting that there has been a surge of international interest recently in female to male transgendering. She describes the reasons for this interest as a reaction against overtly racist & homophobic governments, citing the Brandon Teena case in example. Halberstam feels that identity with subject is not necessary for writing academic texts, but biography is a special case where insiders are more likely to know the truth. Halberstam does not believe that feminism & queer studies should be put into different camps, but need to work together. Halberstam describes her interest in the urban, rural, & drag king cultures.
