This overview shows that Japan's security policy towards Southeast Asia has evolved as a policy which is based on a rather narrow bipolar view of world politics. The major reason for this circumstance is the predominance of bilateralist policies in Japan's foreign and security policy, that is, the comprehensive Japanese-American relationship. However, Japan's security interests in Southeast Asia are considerable because of its investments in the region. This is the factor which will increasingly shape Japan's security policy and perception of security towards the region
