In the last 12 months there has been close examination of the 'asylum crisis' by a range of interested parties, from government and NGOs to the tabloid press and the British public. As well as the 'numbers issue' and questions about routes of access into Britain, the very nature and purpose of the 1999 Immigration and Asylum Act has been called to account, particularly regarding policies on dispersal and vouchers. How are these debates being framed, what is the human cost and the best way forward?
; Based on a qualitative case study of the former Federal Asylum Office of Austria, the book provides sociological insight into governmental action on the administration of asylum in the European context. It offers an unprecedented view through the perspective of organizational sociology with a link to broader social theory and goes beyond traditional street-level bureaucracy approaches by including theories of social practice, structuration, and social construction. After an exploration of the context and circumstances of work, the structural contradictions characterizing caseworkers' day-to-day work are analyzed; the book concludes by pointing out the necessary attention to ethics in public administration, especially in the context of international protection.

Drawing on new research material from ten European countries, Asylum Determination in Europe: Ethnographic Perspectives brings together a range of detailed accounts of the legal and bureaucratic processes by which asylum claims are decided. The book includes a legal overview of European asylum determination procedures, followed by sections on the diverse actors involved, the means by which they communicate, and the ways in which they make life and death decisions on a daily basis. It offers a contextually rich account that moves beyond doctrinal law to uncover the gaps and variances between formal policy and legislation, and law as actually practiced. The contributors employ a variety of disciplinary perspectives – sociological, anthropological, geographical and linguistic – but are united in their use of an ethnographic methodological approach. Through this lens, the book captures the confusion, improvisation, inconsistency, complexity and emotional turmoil inherent to the process of claiming asylum in Europe.

The rise in the number of asylum seekers in Australia presents considerable challenges to the state as they are a self-selected, demand-driven group, whose numbers, country of origin, ethnic background, and social demographic characteristics cannot be determined in advance of their arrival. People who apply for protection at the border are regarded primarily as illegal immigrants, and only secondarily as asylum seekers, and the illegality of their entry has become the primary factor in the way they are treated by the state, rather than their need for protection. Two streams of asylum seekers and two streams of refugees have been created. There are marked differences in the treatment given while claims for protection are examined and once decisions have been made in their favor. This article examines the development of asylum policy in Australia and sets the discussion within a review of the number of people who have applied for and been granted protection in recent years.
This research investigates the interaction between the effects of wording and other elements of framing on public attitudes toward asylum policies. In particular, we focus on the labels of asylum-seekers and the discourse about the recent refugee crisis in Europe. In 2015 and 2016, we conducted two survey-experiments in Hungary where mass migration was the major issue on the political agenda at the time of the surveys. The salience of the issue was manipulated in both studies. Earlier findings have indicated that even words with the same meaning could prompt different interpretations in specific contexts. In contrast, we show that even large effects of wording, even if they are driven by differential meaning, can be suppressed by other elements of framing.
