The focus in this research was on the effects of restorative experiences in an immersive virtual reality (VR) forest environment. For 5 min one hundred participants used a VR application depicting a forest via a head-mounted display and headphones. The extent of the restorative effect on the participants was measured in terms of perceived restorative outcomes, vitality, and mood before and after using the VR application. After finding out that using the VR application improved the perceived restoration outcomes, vitality and mood of the participants, the perceived restoration of the VR environment was compared with experiences in physical forests. According to the results, the VR environment was generally perceived as restorative as the physical forest environments, and more fascinating and coherent. The results imply that VR technology could have an effective restorative function during a school or work day when there is no access to highly restorative natural environments. Knowledge about the restorative qualities of physical and virtual natural environments could be applied to develop both the virtual and physical environments that are currently available and where people have access to. ; Peer reviewed

; This paper focuses on the use of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in educational contexts (school and higher education) from the perspective of Media Studies. In particular, the paper addresses the basic principles of AR and VR in terms of media technology and its intertwinement with discourses from fields such as education policy, economy and science. First, a neglect of the specific mediality of the two technologies is established on the basis of a scale model by Milgram and Kishino, the ‹virtuality continuum› from 1994, which aims to determine the relationship between virtuality and reality. Moreover, a paradigm shift in the interface designs of the two technologies is identified. In order to emphasize the relevance of the material and data-technical dimension, the article then uses Facebook (now named Meta) as an example to refer to the systematic entanglement of learners with economic actors, their visions influenced by pop culture and economic interests. Subsequently, the author presents the narrative of the so-called ‹empathy machine›, which is dominant in the context of AR and especially VR. The author discusses the narrative's impact on the content of AR and VR applications. The questions raised in the article are intended to supplement didactic discussions on the use of the two technologies in educational contexts.

Godwired offers an engaging exploration of religious practice in the digital age. It considers how virtual experiences, like stories, games and rituals, are forms of world-building or "cosmos construction" that serve as a means of making sense of our own world. Such creative and interactive activity is, arguably, patently religious. This book examines: the nature of sacred space in virtual contexts; technology as a vehicle for sacred texts; who we are when we go online; what rituals have in common with games and how they work online; what happens to community when people worship online; how religious "worlds" and virtual "worlds" nurture similar desires. Rachel Wagner suggests that whilst our engagement with virtual reality can be viewed as a form of religious activity, today's virtual religion marks a radical departure from traditional religious practice -- it is ephemeral, transient, rapid, disposable, hyper-individualized, hybrid, and in an ongoing state of flux. - Publisher
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies are based on the creation of a completely new scene that cannot be touched by the bare hand but is sensually perceived through a combination of artificial visual and sound effects. Although the overall goal of these two technologies is similar, the artificial reality that can be created via VR or AR is not the same. VR is a computer-generated simulation of an alternate world or reality, primarily used in 3D movies and video games. Virtual reality creates a simulation that aims to close off the outside world or immerse the viewers, using computers and sensory equipment such as headphones and gloves. The HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR glasses, and Google cardboard are some of the most popular devices used in VR. Virtual reality applications are not limited to entertainment and games only, but are also used in the field of education and medicine, for example, surgeons plan and train their operations, and it has also been used in the military field to simulate some military exercises under harsh conditions.

This article examines the various points of view of domestic and foreign researchers about the place of virtual reality in the space of a modern person. The authors of the article give a generalized description of the concept of "virtual reality". Particular attention is paid to the phenomenon of electronic culture as a virtual form of expression, which in turn contributes to the creation of a single information space. The introduction of electronic culture is reflected in the life of modern society, since it affects the change in values and forms of interaction. The article reveals the problems of the influence of virtual technologies on the psychological state of a person, considers the transformation of the stylistic characteristics of individual thinking and the formation of a new individual consciousness, postclassical hyperconsciousness, and analyzes computer games, which are currently one of the most visual ways of entering virtual reality. A new ASMR technology is considered, which is actively developing in the Internet environment, which does not yet have a scientific basis, but is developing in the environment of network communities. As you can see, the virtual world is improving, becoming more and more popular and attractive for a modern person. At the same time, there is an increasing virtualization of consciousness. Thus, virtual technologies contribute to both the growth of human social activity, providing ample opportunities for self-expression and exchange of experience, and virtualization of consciousness, offering new variations of the attractiveness of the virtual world.
