Tim DiMuzio is a lecturer in International Relations and Public Policy at the University of Wollongong in Australia. His book, 'The 1% and the Rest of Us: A Political Economy of Dominant Ownership', examines the insular lives of the global super rich, the socio-economic system they head, and their restless drive to dominate society and nature. NLP's Tom Mills spoke to him about the book, its approach to political economy and the consequences for left political strategy.

Modern civilization and the social reproduction of capitalism are bound inextricably with fossil fuel consumption. But as carbon energy resources become scarcer, what implications will this have for energy-intensive modes of life? Can renewable energy sustain high levels of accumulation? Introduction/purpose: The aim of this paper is to present the concept of b(an,bn)-hypermetric spaces. Methods: Conventional theoretical methods of functional analysis. Results: This study presents the initial results on the topic of b(an,bn)-hypermetric spaces. In the first part, we generalize an n-dimensional (n ≥ 2) hypermetric distance over an arbitrary non-empty set X. The b(an,bn)-hyperdistance function is defined in any way we like, the only constraint being the simultaneous satisfaction of the three properties, viz, non-negativity and positive-definiteness, symmetry and (an, bn)-triangle inequality. In the second part, we discuss the concept of (an, bn)-completeness, with respect to this b(an,bn)-hypermetric, and the fixed point theorem which plays an important role in applied mathematics in a variety of fields. Conclusion: With proper generalisations, it is possible to formulate well-known results of classical metric spaces to the case of b(an,bn)-hypermetric spaces.

FROM THE BACK COVER: How might an objective observer conceive of what humans have accomplished as a species over its brief history? Benjamin argues that history can be judged as one giant catastrophe. Liberals suggest that this is to sombre an assessment and that human history can be read as a story of greater and greater progress in human rights, prosperity and the decrease of arbitrary and extra-judicial violence. But is there a third reading of history, one that neither interprets human history as a giant catastrophe or endless progress? Could we not say that human development has been a tragedy? This book explores the idea of human development as a tragedy from the perspective of capitalist power. Although the argument of this book draws heavily on critical political economy, the analysis considers interdisciplinary literature in an effort to explore how major revolutions have transformed human social relations of power and created certain path dependencies that may ultimately lead to our downfall as a species. Intellectually sophisticated and readable, this book offers a provocative genealogy of capitalist power and the tragedy of human development.

This work aims to develop methodologies to print pinhole-free, vertically stacked heterostructures by sequential deposition of conductive graphene and dielectric h-BN nanosheet networks. We achieve this using a combination of inkjet printing and spray-coating to fabricate dielectric capacitors in a stacked graphene/BN/graphene arrangement. Impedance spectroscopy shows such heterostructures to act as series combinations of a capacitor and a resistor, with the expected dimensional dependence of the capacitance. The areal capacitance ranges from 0.24 to 1.1?nF/cm2 with an average series resistance of ?120?k?. The sprayed BN dielectrics are pinhole-free for thicknesses above 1.65??m. It is a superb book.

Trump has promised to Make America Great Again. As a self-proclaimed expert on everything of import, he knows exactly how to increase domestic investment and consumption, boost exports, reduce the country's trade deficit, expand employment and bolster wages. And as America's leader-and-policymaker-in-chief, he has taken the necessary steps to achieve every one of these goals. He has lowered taxes on corporations and the rich to induce greater investment, relaxed environmental standards and de-socialized medical care to cut red tape and eliminate waste, curtailed civilian government spending and raised military expenditures to make government lean and mean, warned corporations and individuals to remain economically patriotic and undermined the Fed's "independence" to prevent interest rates from rising and the stock market from tanking. And if that wasn't enough, he has also launched a so-called trade war to prevent America from being ripped off by other countries, especially China. Capitalists and pundits follow him like imprinted ducks. His tweets rattle markets, his announcements are dissected by academics and his utterances are analysed to exhaustion by various media. A visiting alien might infer that he actually runs the world. And the alien wouldn't be alone. The earthly population too, conditioned by ivory-tower academics and popular opinion makers, tends to think of political figureheads as "leaders" and "policymakers". Situated at the "commanding heights" of their respective nation states and international organizations, these "leaders" supposedly set the rules, make policies, steer their societies and determine the course of history. Or at least that's the common belief. The reality, though, is quite different.

On April 16, 2014, we published a short article in the Indian fortnightly Frontline, titled 'Profit from Crisis'. Scarcely had a day passed from the article's publication that we got an angry email from an asset manager whom we'll call 'Mr. X'. Mr. X is an enlightened capitalist, and reading our piece had set him on fire. Our article, he protested, was 'terribly flawed'. It 'failed miserably' in understanding capitalism, and its allegation that capitalists do not want recovery is doing 'tremendous harm'. This note deconstructs Mr. X's protestations in the context of the current capitalist angst.
