Human myogenic precursor cells have been isolated and expanded from a number of skeletal muscles, but alternative donor biopsy sites must be sought after in diseases where muscle damage is widespread. Biopsy sites must be relatively accessible, and the biopsied muscle dispensable. Here, we aimed to histologically characterize the cremaster muscle with regard number of satellite cells and regenerative fibres, and to isolate and characterize human cremaster muscle-derived stem/precursor cells in adult male donors with the objective of characterizing this muscle as a novel source of myogenic precursor cells. Cremaster muscle biopsies (or adjacent non-muscle tissue for negative controls; N = 19) were taken from male patients undergoing routine surgery for urogenital pathology. Myosphere cultures were derived and tested for their in vitro and in vivo myogenic differentiation and muscle regeneration capacities. Cremaster-derived myogenic precursor cells were maintained by myosphere culture and efficiently differentiated to myotubes in adhesion culture. Upon transplantation to an immunocompromised mouse model of cardiotoxin-induced acute muscle damage, human cremaster-derived myogenic precursor cells survived to the transplants and contributed to muscle regeneration. These precursors are a good candidate for cell therapy approaches of skeletal muscle. Due to their location and developmental origin, we propose that they might be best suited for regeneration of the rhabdosphincter in patients undergoing stress urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy. ; We thank patients and medical personnel for their generous involvement in the study. Background: Many women with breast cancer experience a great number of side effects, such as cognitive impairment, during and after chemotherapy that reduces their quality of life. Currently, research focusing on the use of non-pharmacological, and specifically telehealth interventions to prevent or mitigate them has been insufficient. Methods: This protocol describes a randomized controlled trial aimed at studying the preventive effects of a videoconferenced cognitive-adaptive training (e-OTCAT) program (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04783402). A number of 98 eligible participants will be randomized to one of the following groups: (a) the experimental group receiving the e-OTCAT program during 12 consecutive weeks since the beginning of chemotherapy; and (b) the control group receiving and educational handbook and usual care. The primary outcome will be the cognitive function. Secondary measures will be psychological distress, fatigue, sleep disturbance, quality of life and occupational performance. The time-points for these measures will be placed at baseline, after 12 weeks and six months of post-randomization. Multi-sensor advanced DInSAR analyses have been performed and compared with two GPS station measurements, in order to evaluate the land subsidence evolution in a 20-year period, in the Alto Guadalentín Basin where the highest rate of man-induced subsidence (> 10 cm yr−1) of Europe had been detected. A twenty-year period of severe land subsidence evolution in the Alto Guadalentín Basin (southeast Spain) is monitored using multi-sensor SAR images, processed by advanced differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) techniques. The SAR images used in this study consist of four datasets acquired by ERS-1/2, ENVISAT, ALOS and COSMO-SkyMed satellites between 1992 and 2012. The integration of ground surface displacement maps retrieved for different time periods allows us to quantify up to 2.50 m of cumulated displacements that occurred between 1992 and 2012 in the Alto Guadalentín Basin. DInSAR results were locally compared with global positioning system (GPS) data available for two continuous stations located in the study area, demonstrating the high consistency of local vertical motion measurements between the two different surveying techniques. An average absolute error of 4.6 ± 4 mm for the ALOS data and of 4.8 ± 3.5 mm for the COSMO-SkyMed data confirmed the reliability of the analysis. The spatial analysis of DInSAR ground surface displacement reveals a direct correlation with the thickness of the compressible alluvial deposits. Detected ground subsidence in the past 20 years is most likely a consequence of a 100–200 m groundwater level drop that has persisted since the 1970s due to the overexploitation of the Alto Guadalentín aquifer system. [Abstract] The EMPA-REG OUTCOME (Empagliflozin, Cardiovascular Outcome Event Trial in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM)) trial evidenced the potential of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors for the treatment of patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Recent evidences have shown the benefits of the SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin on improving liver steatosis and fibrosis in patients with T2DM. Metabolomic studies have been shown to be very useful to improve the understanding of liver pathophysiology during the development and progression of metabolic hepatic diseases, and because the effects of empagliflozin and of other SGLT2 inhibitors on the complete metabolic profile of the liver has never been analysed before, we decided to study the impact on the liver of male Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats of a treatment for 6 weeks with empagliflozin using an untargeted metabolomics approach, with the purpose to help to clarify the benefits of the use of empagliflozin at hepatic level. We found that empagliflozin is able to change the hepatic lipidome towards a protective profile, through an increase of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated glycerides, phosphatidylcholines, phosphatidylethanolamines, lysophosphatidylinositols and lysophosphatidylcholines. Empagliflozin also induces a decrease in the levels of the markers of inflammation IL-6, chemerin and chemerin receptor in the liver. Since World War II, abortion policies have remained remarkably varied across European nations, with struggles over abortion rights at the forefront of national politics. This volume analyses European abortion governance and explores how social movements, political groups, and individuals use protests and resistance to influence abortion policy. Drawing on case studies from Italy, Spain, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the European Union, it analyses the strategies and discourses of groups seeking to liberalise or restrict reproductive rights. It also illuminates the ways that reproductive rights politics intersect with demographic anxieties, as well as the rising nationalisms and xenophobia related to austerity policies, mass migration and the recent terrorist attacks in Europe.

En junio de 2016, la Generalitat Valenciana aprobó el Plan de Contingencia Autonómico frente a X. fastidiosa, basado en el Plan de Contingencia Nacional, pero adaptado a las características y cultivos específicos de la Comunidad Valenciana. Este plan ha sido revisado en enero del 2017, incrementándose considerablemente las intensidades de prospección en los principales cultivos de nuestra comunidad autónoma (cítricos, viña, olivo, Prunus spp. y plantas ornamentales) así como en la gran cantidad de empresas inscritas en nuestros registros como proveedores de material vegetal de reproducción y también en parques y jardines de titularidad pública y privada, todos ellos considerados como puntos críticos de riesgo de introducción de la bacteria en nuestro territorio. Con estas directrices, se han realizado más de 2.000 prospecciones entre 2015 y junio de 2017, principalmente en zonas de mayor riesgo climático para el establecimiento de la enfermedad, como se señala en la Figura 1. De las prospecciones de material vegetal citadas, en 2015 se analizaron 468 muestras procedentes de viveros y de plantaciones en el Laboratorio de Diagnóstico Fitopatológico (LDF), que es el laboratorio oficial de la Comunidad Valenciana en materia de sanidad vegetal, pertenecientes a especies diferentes (naranjo, mandarino, pomelo, cítricos híbridos, olivo, almendro, vid, adelfa, Choisya ternata y Polygala myrtifolia). En 2016 se analizaron 423 muestras, entre las que se incluyeron nuevas especies, además de las anteriormente citadas (limonero, kumquat, cafeto, ciruelo, albaricoquero, cerezo, laurel, romero, Prunus mahaleb y Quercus ilex). Todas estas muestras dieron resultados negativos para la detección de X. fastidiosa.

The brucellae are facultative intracellular bacteria that cause a worldwide extended zoonosis. One of the pathogenicity mechanisms of these bacteria is their ability to avoid rapid recognition by innate immunity because of a reduction of the pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS), free-lipids, and other envelope molecules. We investigated the Brucella homologs of lptA, lpxE, and lpxO, three genes that in some pathogens encode enzymes that mask the LPS PAMP by upsetting the core-lipid A charge/hydrophobic balance. Brucella lptA, which encodes a putative ethanolamine transferase, carries a frame-shift in B. abortus but not in other Brucella spp. and phylogenetic neighbors like the opportunistic pathogen Ochrobactrum anthropi. Consistent with the genomic evidence, a B. melitensis lptA mutant lacked lipid A-linked ethanolamine and displayed increased sensitivity to polymyxin B (a surrogate of innate immunity bactericidal peptides), while B. abortus carrying B. melitensis lptA displayed increased resistance. Brucella lpxE encodes a putative phosphatase acting on lipid A or on a free-lipid that is highly conserved in all brucellae and O. anthropi. Although we found no evidence of lipid A dephosphorylation, a B. abortus lpxE mutant showed increased polymyxin B sensitivity, suggesting the existence of a hitherto unidentified free-lipid involved in bactericidal peptide resistance. Gene lpxO putatively encoding an acyl hydroxylase carries a frame-shift in all brucellae except B. microti and is intact in O. anthropi. Free-lipid analysis revealed that lpxO corresponded to olsC, the gene coding for the ornithine lipid (OL) acyl hydroxylase active in O. anthropi and B. microti, while B. abortus carrying the olsC of O. anthropi and B. microti synthesized hydroxylated OLs. Interestingly, mutants in lptA, lpxE, or olsC were not attenuated in dendritic cells or mice. Para el cuerpo académico, el punto de partida de una educación superior de calidad se encuentra en los procesos establecidos en la sociedad. Otro aspecto a considerar en la calidad educativa se encuentra enmarcado en las competencias. El alcance de una educación de calidad en términos de competencias profesionales, debe considerar en la visión y misión de una institución educativa una fuerte carga de conocimiento antropológico, político, sociológico y ético, a fin de dar un sentido más integral a la formación de los estudiantes.Las escuelas de educación superior tienen la encomienda de generar el pensamiento reflexivo y crítico, ya que gracias a este último es factible la creatividad y la innovación. La importancia de los cuerpos académicos radica en que al desarrollarse un trabajo colegiado entre profesores de tiempo completo y de asignatura, para orientar y marcar el rumbo académico de la institución, se impulsa la vinculación de los procesos para la generación y/o aplicación del conocimiento con sectores del exterior.En la actualidad, la formación profesional y especializada no constituye una garantía del desempeño adecuado de los profesionales en las instituciones de educación. Another aspect to consider in the quality of education is framed within the competences. The scope of quality education in terms of skills, should be considered in the vision and mission of an educational institution; a strong anthropological, political, sociological and ethical knowledge will give a more integral formation to students.Schools of higher education have the task of generating the critical and reflective thinking; thanks to the latter creativity and innovation are feasible. The importance of academic bodies is that the development of a collegial work among teachers and full-time faculty, to guide and set the direction of the academic institution, promotes the linking of processes for generating and / or application of knowledge sectors abroad.At present, specialist training is no guarantee of adequate performance of professionals in educational institutions.
