A review essay on a book by Jared Diamond, Guns, Germs and Steel: A Short History of Everybody for the Last 13,000 Years (London: Vintage, 1998). Diamond makes an important contribution to the study of historical materialism. His primary thesis is that differences in human cultures arose not because of differences among peoples but because of differences in the environment. In illustrating this thesis, Diamond focuses on the development of food production but unintentionally succeeds in supporting historical materialism. He also demonstrates the important role that Marxist traditions have played throughout history. This is quite a feat for an author who cannot claim to be a historian, a social scientist, or a historical-materialist theorist. In short, the book is remarkable for its investigation of the relationship between social competition & biological reproduction & for its ability to demonstrate how these two factors acted in concert with one another to shape history. 35 References. [EN] Sustainability practices impact on the competitiveness of organizations. Enterprises need approaches that both support the implementation of these practices by helping to define the strategic elements of sustainable supply chains and prioritize projects to increase profitability. The purpose of this paper is to propose an approach using the Analytic Hierarchy Process that supports the portfolio project decision by aligning the project selection process to the strategic objectives of a supply chain that pursue sustainability. This approach will benefit enterprises to prioritize projects that have the highest impact on the sustainability strategy of the supply chain over time. AbstractHow does social information affect the perception of taste early in life? Does mere knowledge of other people's food preferences impact children's own experience when eating? In Experiment 1, 5‐ and 6‐year‐old children consumed more of a food described as popular with other children than a food that was described as unpopular with other children, even though the two foods were identical. In Experiment 2, children ate more of a food described as popular with children than a food described as popular with adults. Experiment 3 tested whether different perceptual experiences of otherwise identical foods contributed to the mechanisms underlying children's consumption. After sampling both endpoints of a sweet‐to‐sour range (applesauce with 0 mL or 5mL of lemon juice added), children were asked to taste and categorize applesauce samples with varying amounts of lemon juice added. When classifying ambiguous samples that were near the midpoint of the range (2 mL and 3 mL), children were more likely to categorize popular foods as sweet as compared to unpopular foods. Together, these findings provide evidence that social information plays a powerful role in guiding children's consumption and perception of foods. Broader links to the sociality of food selection are discussed.

AbstractThis research investigates children's use of social categories in their food selection. Across three studies, we presented preschoolers with sets of photographs that contrasted food‐eating models with different characteristics, including model gender, race (Black, White), age (child or adult), and/or expression (acceptance or rejection of the food). Children were asked to pick between the photographs to choose which food they would like for snack. Results demonstrated that preschoolers prefer foods being eaten by models with positive over negative expressions, foods being eaten by child over adult models, and foods being eaten by child models of the same gender as themselves over models of the other gender. This work connects with previous research on children's understanding of social categories and also has important practical implications for how characteristics of a food‐eating model can affect children's willingness to try new foods.
