Der Friedensprozeß im Nahen Osten macht deutlich, wie eng gerade für Israel Frieden, die wirtschaftliche Lage und nationaler Wohlstand miteinander verflochten sind. Aufgrund des sozio-ökonomischen Wandels in Israel profitiert das Land entscheidend von ausländischen Investitionen, die vor den Friedensverhandlungen nur mangelhaft getätigt wurden. Trotz der Friedensabkommen mit Ägypten und Jordanien darf aber nicht vergessen werden, daß Israel noch immer auch von "feindlichen" Nachbarländern umgeben ist, die zum einen regionale wirtschaftliche Beziehungen kaum ermöglichen und zum anderen die wirtschaftlichen Aspekte für Israel weniger bedeutend erscheinen lassen als die militärischen (SWP-Drh)
