Studies on foreign policy think tanks have too often remained disconnected from the analysis of foreign policy outcomes. Yet, investigating the development, functions and influence of think tanks can provide valuable insights into the context in which foreign policy is formulated. The Czech Republic and Poland represent interesting comparative cases in this regard: while Polish think tanks are more numerous and tend to be better placed in international rankings, they are less involved in the policymaking process than their Czech counterparts. This contrast has mainly to do with the sociology of foreign policy elites and the role of political parties in both countries.

Based on interviews and existing literature, we discuss the genesis and the development of the mission and then evaluate its impact. We argue that the mission with time became a key diplomatic instrument and enabled EU power projection by giving momentum to the promotion of the EU's approach towards Ukraine, which was already wavering due to the deadlock over the Association Agreement between Kyiv and Brussels and then due to President Yanukovych's refusal to sign the agreement.

Against this backdrop, the recent shift towards geopolitics and strategic thinking is contextualized and the understanding of key aspects of ways in which the shift is translated into strategies by EU actors is put forward. The analysis recognizes the recent developments within the institutional dimension of EU's foreign and security policy, yet it confirms the fundamental meaning of the member states' willingness to invest resources and harmonize their foreign policy strategies at the EU level.

Das Buch behandelt die Einwirkung der EU auf den polnischen Staat seit dem polnischen EU-Beitritt. Autoren aus Rechts- und Politikwissenschaften analysieren EU-induzierte Transformationsprozesse, die im Rechtssystem Polens, dem Parteiensystem sowie mehreren Politikfeldern stattfanden. Im Folgenden wird vor allem die Phase nach dem EU-Beitritt Polens betrachtet, ohne die Zeit vor 2004, in der das Fundament für die Sicherheits- und Verteidigungszusammenarbeit gelegt wurde, vollkommen außen vor zu lassen.

On July 1, 2011, Poland will assume the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union. As the largest of the new member states to assume the Presidency, Poland hopes its tenure will advance its regional leadership ambitions. The Polish Council presidency will face pressure from two directions, first from within the national political arena, fuelled by the upcoming electoral campaign, and second from its fellow EU member states, which will expect Poland to set aside its own interests and act as an »honest broker«. The Polish presidency will likely focus on finalizing negotiations with Croatia and negotiating with Moldova within the Eastern Partnership, since its remaining priorities can only be realised over the long term. The Council presidency can serve as an effective instrument to promote Poland as a major player within the EU and to enhance the country's image as an important and reliable partner. ; Monika Sus

By studying the impact of the three explanatory categories: historical legacy, interdependence and asymmetry on the bilateral relationship, the book explores the patterns of cooperation and identify the driving forces and hindering factors of the bilateral relationship. Covering the Polish-German relationship since 2004, it demonstrates in a systematic way, that it does not qualify as embedded bilateralism. The relationship remains historically burdened, asymmetric and thus it is not resilient to crises.
