PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of self-worth on status consumption, focusing on the mediation of self-enhancement and self-compensation and the moderation of power distance belief (PDB) in the relationship of threats to self-worth and consumer choice.Design/methodology/approachExperiments are used to collect data. Three studies are designed to test the relationship between self-worth, self-enhancement and self-compensation, PDB and status consumption. In total, 180 MBA students participate Study 1, 186 and 244 undergraduate students participate Studies 2 and 3, respectively. ANOVA and bootstrapping method are adopted to analyze the data by using SPSS version 19.0. Study 1 tests the influence of self-worth on status consumption; Study 2 examines the mediation role of self-enhancement and self-compensation; and Study 3 tests the moderation role of PDB.FindingsResults indicate that situational self-worth perception has dual path effects on status consumption. Both improvements in – and threats to – self-worth have a positive impact on status consumption. Improvements in self-worth affect status consumption through the mediation of self-enhancement motives. Threats to self-worth affect status and non-status consumption through the mediation of the self-compensation motive. In the context of a threat to self-worth, compared with consumers with a low PDB, high-PDB consumers have higher purchase intention for status goods but not non-status goods.Research limitations/implicationsIn this study, improvements in – and threats to – self-worth are momentarily manipulated. The authors present one product in each experiment, but what would happen if both status goods and non-status goods were shown to participants? Which one will the authors choose under different self-worth manipulations? And how long can the effects last? These questions should be answered in future research.Practical implicationsThis research provides a venue for marketers to introduce and advertise status goods. Marketing practitioners should establish the link between self-worth and status consumption appeals. In the Asia-Pacific markets, Confucian value is important to consumers, and high power distance is important in Confucianism. Thus when developing markets in China, international companies should emphasize Confucian values in the design of advertisements or other promotional items. Further, marketing for status goods should attach importance to the expression of their symbolic meanings.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature on self-worth and status consumption. It also explores the dual path of the effect of self-worth on status consumption. The motives of self-enhancement and self-compensation are first proposed and tested to explain the mechanism, which differentiates the study from prior work and gives a more reasonable explanation for status and compensatory consumption. The moderation role of PDB delineates the boundary for the effect of a threat to self-worth on status consumption.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and treatment of late recurrent osteosarcoma following surgery. The cases of three patients with late recurrent osteosarcoma, who were treated at the General Hospital of Jinan Military Command, General Hospital of Nanjing Military Command and Xinan Hospital of The Third Military Medical University, were analyzed retrospectively. Furthermore, 10 cases of late recurrent osteosarcoma were retrieved from the literature. In total, eight male and five female cases were selected for the present study. The mean age at recurrence was 25.56 years (range, 13–42 years). The locations of the osteosarcomas were as follows: five cases in the distal femur, two cases in the distal tibia and acetabulum, respectively, and one case in the proximal tibia (the remaining cases were not described). The tumors were histologically classified into three cases of fibroblastic, two cases of traditional-type; two cases of mixed-type and one case each of osteoblastic-, chondroblastic- and telangiectasia-type osteosarcoma (the remaining cases were not described). The mean recurrence time following surgery was 10.02 years (range, 5.2–19.3 years). With regard to the treatment modalities, five patients accepted surgery and chemotherapy, one patient accepted surgery and radiotherapy, two patients accepted surgery alone and one patient did not complete the treatment (the remaining cases were not described). From the 12 cases that were followed-up for between 0.5 and 4.7 years (mean, 2.28 years), one case was lost to follow-up, six patients survived (up to 4.5 years) and six patients succumbed to their condition (0.6–4.7 years). The present study highlights the fact that more focus should be placed upon the long-term follow-up of patients with osteosarcoma. A follow-up is required once every six months, from five years after the diagnosis. The abnormal changes in the surgical site should also receive further attention, in addition to the pulmonary and systemic metastases. ...

Our previous study indicated that clinical teaching nurses in China suffered high levels of perceived stress and burnout, mainly because they were taking double responsibilities of nursing and teaching at the same time. The study aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of how and when perceived stress increased the risk of burnout and decreased life satisfaction among clinical teaching nurses. Questionnaires about perceived stress, burnout, emotion regulation, and life satisfaction were self-administered to 1,372 teaching nurses from eight tertiary military hospitals in China. Correlation and hierarchical multiple regressions were employed for data analysis. The results revealed that perceived stress had direct and indirect impacts on life satisfaction, with the principal element of burnout—emotional exhaustion—acting as a mediator. Moreover, the association between perceived stress and emotional exhaustion was moderated by emotion suppression—a key emotion regulation strategy. The negative impact of perceived stress on burnout was stronger among teaching nurses with high emotion suppression than among those with low emotion suppression. The present study contributed to a deeper understanding of the relationship between perceived stress and life satisfaction and also suggested further research into emotion regulation interventions to alleviate or eliminate the impact of perceived stress on burnout and eventually improve the life satisfaction for Chinese clinical nursing teachers.

Ophiocordyceps sinensis is one rare medicinal fungus produced in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Its quality and price varies hugely with different habitat, and its numerous substitutes have sprung up in functional food markets. This paper aims to discriminate the geographic origin of wild O. sinensis and its substitutes via element analyzer–isotope ratio mass spectrometry and gas chromatography–isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The δ13C values of major fatty acids in the lipids of O. sinensis are characterized unanimously by the variation relation C18:0 < C18:2 ≈ C16:0 < C18:1, while their fluctuation intervals are notably different between those of neutral and polar lipids. The comparative analysis of the δ13C ratios of major fatty acids in lipids of O. sinensis suggests that the δ13C patterns may be sensitive potential indicators to discriminate its geographical origin. The δ13C values of individual major fatty acids of lipids from the cultivated stromata of Cordyceps militaris (SCM), the fermented mycelia of Hirsurella sinensis (FMH) and Paecilomyces epiali (FMP) range from −31.2‰ to −29.7‰, −16.9‰ to −14.3‰, and −26.5‰ to −23.9‰, respectively. Their δ13C pattern of individual major fatty acids may be used as a potential indicator to discriminate the products of natural O. sinensis and its substitutes.

Ophiocordyceps sinensis has been utilized in China and adjacent countries for thousands of years as a rare functional food to promote health and treat diverse chronic diseases. In recent years, adulterants are usually identified in the processed products of wild O. sinensis. However, the effective adulteration examination has to be additionally performed except their routine test, and accordingly is time- and money-consuming. Recently, arsenic determination has become a necessary test for confirming whether the concentrations of inorganic arsenic are over the O. sinensis limit. In this work, the contents of total arsenic and As species in cultivated O. sinensis, Cordyceps militaris, and other edible fungi were determined by ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS. The results suggest that the As speciation exhibits a species-specific behavior, and accompanies the effect of the As background. The proportions of unknown organic As and contents of total As may be considered as sensitive markers for discriminating wild O. sinensis. This result provides a novel clue for discriminating wild and artificially cultivated mushrooms/their products, with emphasis on arsenic markers for authenticating wild O. sinensis.

AbstractAs per the regulations of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the country's carbon emission data hold primacy. Nevertheless, establishing and utilizing a database pose a daunting challenge. This study presents the "Carbon Seer System," a novel software prototype designed to inform and educate users about the carbon footprint during their production and in daily life. The development process involved a three-stage user interview process, ensuring system's alignment with user needs and preferences. The system employs machine learning and visual recognition technology, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), feature pyramid networks, and self-attention mechanisms, enabling users to analyze captured images for carbon emission factors. It automatically identifies the carbon emission factors of industrial products, energy producers, household producers, waste treatment, and transportation. A unique "group detection" method allows for the simultaneous analysis of multiple objects in a single image, enhancing user convenience. Additionally, the software features a carbon footprint tracker and a carbon sink dashboard, providing users with insights into their carbon emissions and the efforts needed for offsetting. The study concludes that the "Carbon Seer System" represents a significant step towards individual enablement at understanding and actively participating in a low-carbon lifestyle.
