A systematic comparison of data drawn from a national sample of the British adult electorate from the 1960s with material drawn from a national mailed survey of candidates who stood for election to the Church of England General Synod in 1975. The Anglican elite is much more politically involved than the citizenry at large. Its support is given chiefly to the Conservative Party but it is in no way homogeneous in that respect. Its views on national economic institutions do not significantly differ from those of like background in the mass sample. Its attitudes toward issues such as capital punishment & immigration are, however, markedly more liberal. These differences could not be explained by educational & class factors. Further research may show more precisely the role of religious values in this field. 7 Tables. AA.
