Abstract
In this article, we develop and apply a typology of formal and substantive party responses to the radical right in three arenas: parliament, party competition, and the media. We argue that these provide distinct environments for parties' scope of action, which is why responses must always be understood in the light of their respective context. Empirically, we focus on the case of the Federal Republic of Germany and illustrate the usefulness of our model by analyzing the responses of the largest conservative and social democratic mainstream parties in the Bundestag (CDU/CSU and SPD) to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) between 2017 and 2022. Although both coalition partners have primarily excluded the AfD at the formal and substantive level, we find crucial differences in their response patterns between the arenas and highlight future research perspectives.

Rechtspopulistische Parteien sind heute in fast allen demokratischen Staaten Teil der Parteiensysteme. Nach einer kurzen Begriffsbestimmung geht der Beitrag zunächst auf die in der Literatur diskutierten Erklärungsansätze für das Aufkommen des neuen Populismus ein. Anschießend werden programmatisch-ideologische Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der Parteienfamilie herausgearbeitet. Im vierten Teil wird in einer Auswertung neuerer Forschungsergebnisse erörtert, welche Gelegenheiten das Klimathema und die Coronapandemie, die die politische Agenda in den letzten Jahren maßgeblich geprägt haben, für die Herausforderer bereithalten. Der fünfte Teil zeigt, warum sich die Möglichkeiten der der Populisten durch die sozialen Medien auch auf der Angebotsseite der Parteiensysteme erheblich verbessert haben. Der Schlussabschnitt geht der Gretchenfrage nach dem Gefährdungspotenzial des Rechtspopulismus für die demokratische Ordnung nach.

Seit ihrer Gründung ist die Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) Gegenstand einer lebhaften Debatte. In der Öffentlichkeit vor allem als "euroskeptisch" verhandelt, sieht sich die Par- tei immer wieder dem Vorwurf ausgesetzt, auch gesellschafts- und integrationspolitisch konservative bis rechte Positionen zu vertreten und zugleich einen Anti-Establishment-Habitus zu pflegen. Auf Grundlage theoretischer Überlegungen zum (Rechts-)Populismus deduzieren wir ein Messkonzept und wenden dies mithilfe einer Kandidatenbefragung auf die relevanten Parteien bei der Bundestagswahl 2013 an. Unsere Analyse ergibt, dass die AfD im Vergleich zu den anderen Parteien eindeutig als rechtspopulistisch bezeichnet werden kann. Darüber hinaus lassen die Ergebnisse eine Anwendung des Messkonzepts auf andere Länder im Rahmen vergleichender Studien sinnvoll erscheinen. ; Since its formation, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has been subject to a lively debate. While it has been characterized as 'Eurosceptical' in public, the party is more and more accused of promoting conservative and right-wing positions in terms of societal policy and integration as well as showing anti-establishment attitudes. Based on theoretical work on (right-wing) populism, we deduce a measurement concept that is applied to all relevant parties campaigning in the 2013 Bundestag election by using a comprehensive candidate survey. The results suggest that the AfD is indeed a right-wing populist party in comparison to other parties. Moreover, they encourage the application of our measure- ment approach in a comparative research design.

AbstractWhen do voters turn a blind eye on corrupt politicians? Recent research suggests that voters might be willing to support corrupt politicians due to a lack of a 'viable and clean alternative,' i.e., voters prefer supporting a corrupt politician when the alternative is to support a politician who takes a fundamentally different policy stance. Following this argument, it has also been argued that especially corrupt politicians from radical parties are less likely to be punished by their voters as these voters are more hostile toward other parties. In other words, voters of radical parties are more likely to lack viable alternatives. Based on a survey experiment conducted in Germany, we put these hypotheses to an empirical test. We find evidence for the expected patterns. Supporters of radical parties are indeed less likely to switch their vote to a different party. However, our experiment also shows that this is because voters of radical parties are more likely to lack a viable alternative. When supporters of radical parties evaluate a clean alternative favorable, they are just as likely as voters of mainstream parties to switch away from the corrupt candidate. Finally, we show how strengths of partisan attachment affect voting for corrupt candidates.
