"Human trafficking for the sex trade is a form of modern day slavery that ensnares thousands of victims each year around the globe. Women and girls make up the majority of victims of sex trafficking, and Heather Smith-Cannoy, Patricia C. Rodda, and Charles Anthony Smith focus their analysis on the complex conditions that lead to trafficking of women and girls and the varied state responses to it. The authors analyze sex trafficking in five countries: India, Thailand, Russia, Nigeria, and Brazil. This book furthers our understanding of sex trafficking by bringing to the forefront the cultural, political, and economic status of women in society. The authors' research demonstrates that state responsiveness to human trafficking is shaped by the rights afforded to women in these societies. While combatting human trafficking is a multi-scalar problem with a host of conflating variables, a common theme in the effectiveness of state responses is the degree to which women and girls are perceived as, and actually are, full citizens. The authors demonstrate that the objectification, commodification, and structural and cultural oppression of women and girls enables states to ignore or minimally address human trafficking"--
State legislatures are tasked with drawing state and federal districts and administering election law, among many other responsibilities. Yet state legislatures are themselves gerrymandered. This book examines how, why, and with what consequences, drawing on an original dataset of ninety-five state legislative maps from before and after 2011 redistricting. Identifying the institutional, political, and geographic determinants of gerrymandering, the authors find that Republican gerrymandering increased dramatically after the 2011 redistricting and bias was most extreme in states with racial segregation where Republicans drew the maps. This bias has had long-term consequences. For instance, states with the most extreme Republican gerrymandering were more likely to pass laws that restricted voting rights and undermined public health, and they were less likely to respond to COVID-19. The authors examine the implications for American democracy and for the balance of power between federal and state government; they also offer empirically grounded recommendations for reform.
Donald Trump was the clear Electoral College winner in the 2016 election, despite losing the popular vote by a wide margin to Hillary Clinton. Anthony J. McGann, Charles Anthony Smith, Michael Latner and Alex Keena write that, unless the Supreme Court stops congressional gerrymandering, President Trump can guarantee re-election in 2020 – even if he loses by 6 percent.

At this stage of the 2016 election cycle, which party will control the White House and the US Senate come January 2017 seems to be very much up in the air. The US House of Representatives on the other hand, is almost certain to remain in the hands of the Republican Party, a situation which is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Anthony J. McGann , Charles Anthony Smith , Michael Latner and Alex Keena argue that the GOP's continued control of the House is down to the gerrymandering of Congressional districts by Republican-controlled state legislatures. They write that in certain states like Pennsylvania, this gerrymandering leads to an asymmetry between the number of seats the Democrats gain and their vote share, reducing their share of US House seats.
