The study investigated the expressed advice of parents, teachers, and Deaf community leaders regarding careers for deaf students in Sweden. The research was conducted: (a) in a country where consensus has been achieved on recognition and accommodation of the educational needs of deaf students; (b) in a city with a very high concentration of deaf individuals, a continuum of educational facilities, and support for deaf students ranging from preschool through college; and, (c) in a community with a strong and active deaf organization and parent organization. The authors found that, despite many advances in the country, communication in the language of the greater society is a potent factor in limiting occupational possibilities for the Deaf.

While the privatisation of public space has been the subject of considerable research, literature exploring the shifting boundaries between public and private law, and the role of those shifts in the expansion of neo-liberal social relations, has been slower to develop. This article explores the use of fire safety regulations to evict political occupations in the context of these shifts. Two examples from the UK student occupation movement and two from the US Occupy movement demonstrate how discourses and logics of both private and public law are mobilised through fire hazard claims to create the potent image of a neutral containment of dissent on technical grounds in the public interest – an image that proves difficult to contest. However, the recourse to the public interest and to expert opinion that underpins fire hazard claims is inconsistent with principles governing the limited neo-liberal political sphere, which underscores the pragmatic and continually negotiated implementation of neo-liberal ideas. The article sheds light on the complexity of the extending reach of private law, on the resilience of the public sphere and on the significance of occupations as a battleground on which struggles over neo-liberal social relations and subjectivities play out.

abstract: Historical research produced for a portion of the exhibit entitled Civil Rights in Arizona, which was displayed at the Luhrs Gallery, Hayden Library in 2012-2013. The action at the ROTC Building was one of the largest protests in Arizona State University history, resulting in the arrest of ten individuals. The second file entitled "Who Were the Tempe Ten" describes the arrested students and unaffiliated persons.

One of the consequences of the revival of sociology as a distinct discipline in the Soviet Union has been the appearance of empirical studies of prevailing attitudes toward the major occupations in Soviet society. These studies have been accompanied by discussions in Soviet newspapers and in the educational and economics literature of the problems associated with the popular perception of various occupations, particularly among student youth.

Prior to the United States' (U.S.) illegal occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom government in 1893 and illegal annexation in 1898, literacy rates and educational attainment in the Hawaiian Kingdom were amongst the highest in the world. In contrast to the educational history of the 19th century, the usurpation of the Hawaiian educational system following the occupation of the U.S. gave way to a century of miseducation and marginalization. Today, more than 130 years after the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom government, the consequences of this event are omnipresent across all sectors of education, including higher education. The downward educational trend correlates with the evolution of the University of Hawaiʻi. This article examines the paradox and the dilemma of the University of Hawaiʻi to become a "Hawaiian Place of Learning" while also fortifying the U.S. occupation of the Hawaiian Islands. This article also highlights possibilities, programming, and philosophies from Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS), a co-curricular unit at the University of Hawaiʻi that both responds to the University's refusals and limitations by contextualizing Hawaiian student success in the 21stcentury and by looking back to the Hawaiian educational system of the 19th century as a blueprint for educational interventions today.

Como parte de uma pesquisa nacional, o artigo interpreta a história das ocupações estudantis no Espírito Santo (ES) em 2016, a partir de relatos colhidos em oito entrevistas com jovens que ocuparam escolas, com base nas categorias geração, juventude e subjetivação política. Se identifica o perfil predominantemente popular e feminino das e dos ocupas, as características do movimento no ES e os impactos das ocupações para quem participou delas. As ocupações, em especial por meio de suas práticas formativas, impactaram decisivamente na trajetória escolar de tais jovens, assim como influenciaram certa continuidade de sua atuação na esfera política. ; As part of a national research, this paper aims to interpret the history of student occupations in Espírito Santo (ES), Brazil in 2016 from reports collected with 8 young people who occupied schools, taking into consideration the categories: generation, youth and political subjectivity. The predominantly popular and feminine profile of the occupiers, the characteristics of the movement in ES and the impacts of the occupations for those who participated in them were identified. Occupations, especially in terms of formative practices, had a decisive impact on the school trajectory of these young people and influenced a certain continuity of their action in the political sphere.

Improving the skills and earnings potential of poor youth and adults should remain a top priority for state and federal policymakers. To improve earnings prospects for recent graduates and to encourage two- and four-year colleges to be responsive to labor market demand, the author proposes that state legislatures implement financial incentives for colleges to steer students toward high-wage occupations and to industries with especially high labor needs. Math proficiency is considered a critical subject for entry into most science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupations. This study examines the relationship between parental occupation and gender differences in students' math performance, that is, the gender math gap. Using insights from theories of social and gender reproduction, we hypothesize that daughters of STEM-employed parents, and especially STEM-employed mothers, will score higher on standardized math tests than their peers with non-STEM parents. Multiple waves of panel data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS–K) featuring students in third, fifth, and eighth grades are used to examine these hypotheses. Results from random effects regression models confirm these hypotheses while also revealing support for STEM-employed father-to-son and father-to-daughter transmission of a math performance advantage. Also, regardless of parental occupation, a gender math gap remains evident. We conclude by discussing implications, study limitations, and directions for future research.
