The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency is responsible for conducting geodetic surveys of U.S. military airfields around the world. Spatial data (e.g. the position of runways, navigational aids, and obstruction features) are collected, validated, and entered into a database system. The current retrieval process does not allow immediate access to the data, which is important for air navigational safety. A web-based GIS prototype was developed to allow quick access, visualization, query, and analysis of the desired data. This web GIS prototype provides an environment that assists current and potential geodetic survey users to explore and retrieve the desired data using ArcGIS 9.3 and ArcGIS Server. This paper discusses the development and implementation of a web-based GIS prototype application which not only provides NGA with a fast and simple dissemination tool by allowing simultaneous data retrieving, but also provides NGA customers the ability to represent spatial data in its geographical context.

This typescript, with photographs pasted in, compiles the activities undertaken in Minneapolis parks in 1936. A note indicates that the photographs and compilation were by Walter B. Dahlberg. Many of the projects involve the building of walls and roads, but also included are the design and creation of concrete runways at the Minneapolis Municipal Airport, and an ""amazingly successful experiment in recreational dramatics"" which involved a troupe presenting plays in parks, playgrounds and public institutions. In the fall of 1933, the United States government inaugurated a program of federal work relief for the unemployed. The purpose of this program was two-fold: to provide work for the unemployed, and to initiate and support useful public projects round the country. The Minneapolis Park Board was included under this program. Beginning under the Civil Works Administration and the Emergency Relief Administration, and continuing under the Works Progress Administration many rehabilitation and improvement projects were undertaken in Minneapolis parks.

In the early 2000s a snake would appear as a prop in a live music performance, catalyzing a "trend" of live snakes as accessories which persists today on runways, red carpets, and on pages of fashion magazines. Around the same time, luxury fashion brands were selling out of snakeskin clothing and accessories, a trend which maintains popularity today. This paper applies a critical animal studies lens and insights from snake behavior literature to consider how live snakes are used in fashion performances and how they may be stressed by these environments. This article also discusses snakeskin as a distinct form of accessory which glamorizes and appraises snake death. Whether they appear alive or dead, the snake's nonconsensual appearance on a runway, red carpet, or stage as a superfluous accessory trivializes and passivizes the snake. Surprisingly, such arguments find opposition from influential global conservation organizations, and the role of the luxury fashion industry is a controversial talking point in snake conservation.

Abstract:This article examines New Deal public works agencies' pivotal contributions to American aeronautical development, arguing that their creation of aviation-related infrastructure offers powerful evidence of the New Deal's success in remaking the American landscape and fostering economic growth. Organizations such as the Civil Works Agency, the Public Works Administration, and the Works Progress Administration built or improved almost every contemporary U.S. airport, funding improvements that created the foundations of America's modern air transport network. Much more than make-work endeavors, these efforts reflected New Dealers' desire to use public works to create worthwhile products. These policies highlight the sophistication with which the New Deal promoted economic development, and belie the image of public works agencies privileging short-term employment to the detriment of economic gain. Airport terminals, runways, hangers, and countless other aviation-related improvements represent some of the New Deal's most significant physical legacies, highlighting the Roosevelt administrations' vital contributions to aeronautical development.

The city's territory is defined by a labyrinth of roads, railroads, and runways. They allow to escape from the metropolis but they often lead back to the abandoned spaces. A study of representation of the postmodern city is an element of the analysis of the world of endless wandering which characterizes the dynamic ecosystem of the present day.

The Arctic is warming at a rate of at least twice the global average. With this rapid warming, permafrost, or permanently frozen ground, is thawing. When permafrost thaws, the organic matter inside begins to break down and releases carbon dioxide and methane, the latter about 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide, as a greenhouse gas over a 20-year period. One of the most visible signs of thawing permafrost is 'drunken forest'--trees leaning at odd angles as they lose their footing in the unstable soil. In Nov 2007, large areas of drunken forest were spreading near Nelemonoye, a Yukaghir community along the upper Kolyma River in the Sakha Republic. Thawing of terrestrial permafrost also has major impact on ecology, hydrology, and human infrastructures, as homes, buildings, roads, and runways can collapse as the ground underneath begins to buckle. Although among the different equipment designs there are only a few substantially different measurement principles, they all have a significant number of design and operational differences. The difficulty of correlation and harmonization between the friction measurement systems due to these design variations has led to operator and regulatory governmental concerns regarding the viability of high-quality harmonized measurements collected by the large array of devices. This paper presents the work performed and the results obtained in the 1st European Pavement Friction Workshop to overcome the differences of designs and technical specifications of device subcomponents using unified standardization practice and uniform requirement/compliance checks and quality assessment of devices. The work also evaluated, analyzed and validated the European and US developed methodologies and technical solutions for standardization and the practical procedures for calibration and quality assessment to ensure reliable, quality data from all devices in a common scale.

This article addresses the problems associated with aircraft noise with or without pilots. It asks whether the administrative measures taken by France and the United Arab Emirates are sufficient and efficient to combat noise pollution. It examines the aeronautical preventive measures, as well as those related to urbanism, before discussing remedial measures for aircraft noise. This article finds that the administrative measures taken by the UAE, in comparison to those of France, are insufficient and ineffective. One of the reasons is that the preventative and suppressive measures reflect the transversal nature of noise: they are both national and international regulations, but they are not homogenous, unitary and structured. Legislative policies, taking into account expert suggestions and opinions, must emerge in the UAE by following the recommendations on the protection of the environment of international institutions, such as ICAO. Thus, the mitigation measures would be used to redistribute aircraft noise to diminish its impact on the most sensitive areas. This article recommends measures such as modifying runways, as well as routes, and special manoeuvres to reduce noise during take-off and approach.

The recolonization of heathland habitats by small mammals after wildfire was examined in Nadgee Nature
Reserve, south-eastern New South Wales. The first native small mammal to arrive was R. lutreolus.
Thickets of tall vegetation were very important and these were colonized via a network of runways leading
from one thicket to another. R. lutreolus were reproductively active at a lower body weight on previously
empty (marginal) heathland habitats than in preferred habitats. After fire, abundance and species diversity
of small mammals increased as habitats aged and grew in complexity. Survival was best on the most structurally
complex habitats. Different requirements of habitat and water are suggested as the main reasons R. lutreolus
were first to colonize heathland, rather than R. fuscrpes. It is also proposed that the lack of competition
from Pseudomys spp. may cause R. lutreolus to switch from the usual 'late regeneration niche' to an 'early'
one. Past studies have proposed the reduction in burning since European settlement as a cause of the
decline in several pseudomyine species. This paper proposes that too frequent burning may have the
same result.

Air traffic control (ATC) system errors rarely occur in today's system. ATC-related aircraft accidents are even rarer events. Nevertheless, more than 90% of all the system errors that do occur stem from human mistakes in attention, judgment, and communications by controllers and their supervisors. Current levels of air traffic are already pressing the capacity of today's system. Future traffic is predicted to increase significantly, but economic and other factors place severe limits on the number of airports and runways that can be built. Resultant traffic congestion and controller work load, despite automation efforts; could increase the error rate and degrade the system's tolerance for errors. Several ATC-related aircraft accidents are summarized to illustrate the controller's changing role and the manner in which the controller interacts with pilots, other controllers, and the work environment. These cases also cite exemplary performance, as well as mistakes, by pilots and controllers, and the circumstances that fostered them, to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of the human element in the present system. Implications for future ATC system design are discussed.

Discothèques, fuelled by sexual liberation (both gay and straight), influenced fashion, music, nightlife entertainment, dancing and society for several years during the 1970s. New York City (NYC) was the epicentre of the disco scene. Sexual freedoms, fuelled by the birth control pill and the repeal of laws in NYC against same-sex dancing, played out in the hedonistic disco venues, the most infamous, Studio 54. The 1977 film, Saturday Night Fever, inspired by the popularity of disco dancing in New York, introduced the dance phenomena to the world, spawning a slew of copycats. The fashion world took notice and disco looks filled the runways and fashion magazines. Part of this new freedom was embodied in recently developed synthetic fabrics that promised easy care, brilliant colour and fluid movement. Disco's downfall was precipitated by the advent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic that threatened both homosexual and heterosexual sexual expression, coinciding with a backlash orchestrated by rock and roll fans. The fashion world in turn revolted against synthetic fabrics, claiming that natural fibres were chic and polyester was cheap. Disco came to a crashing halt in the early 1980s as these social factors, coupled with the 'death to disco' campaign, orchestrated by rock music radio stations, ended the short-lived era.
