The study of the benedictine priories of the Bas-Maine was managed, in two times, in a geopolitic perspective. The first part of the work considers the apparition of the establishments and analyzes each foundation like a process elongated in the time and very contained : the study explores the historic antecedents et the geographical characteristics of the implantation sites, the sociology of the partners of the monks, and the chronology of their action, which is very similar to the general politic evolution. The analysis of the prioral terminology, relatively fluctuating, conduces to see in the apparition of the term of ¤prior¤ a clue of consolidation of the houses. The second part of the work takes up more specifically with the relation between the prioral fact and the politic world and with the analysis of the relationship between the monks and the aristocrats. In a first phase of association, the priories sanctioned and reinforced the legitimacy of the seigniorial domination of the aristocratic partners; in this regard, they let themselves use in the feudal struggles. At the same time integrated in the gregorian project of monastic transformation of the world, they grew on free seigneuries. At the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th, these prioral seigneuries appeared like rivals to the lay seigneurie, and the relationships between the monks and the aristocrats entered, then, in a phase of disassociation. During the second half of the 12th century the development of the royal power aggravated the relationship between priories and lay seigneurs.
Upon the death of Henry III by assassination a succession crisis occurred. Henry III had solemnly recognized Henry of Navarre as his successor before he died. The Catholic League, however, refused to recognize a Protestant as King of France. The military leader of the Leaguists was Charles, Duc de Mayenne who supported the Cardinal of Bourbon, 1523-1590, as Charles X. This pamphlet is a declaration by the Parlement of Paris which also recognized the Cardinal as Charles X. The Cardinal, however, died in May, 1590 leaving no one as the apparent successor. Henry of Navarre's claim to the throne was therefore further strengthened. ; Electronic reproduction; 6, [2] p. ; 17 cm. (8vo)
In examining the influence that Henri Drouot had on historians of early modern France in the English speaking world, this article shows that his work formed an essential reference for anyone seeking to make sense of the French Wars of Religion. Although no-one within this group adopted his well-known thesis of the "bourgeoisie seconde" in order to understand the League movement as it played out in different provincial cities, all of them nevertheless have turned to Mayenne et la Bourgogne as an important model for understanding the relationship between social interests and political action that it has been necessary to address. The number of citations of Drouot's works has therefore increased steadily with the development of the profession as a whole, and numerous North American scholars of France have pointed to the importance of his example for their own work.
Jacques Maître : The Two Sisters The two sisters discussed here are Sophie Lair Lamotte (1849-1838) and Pauline (1853-1918), daughters of a Mayenne hat- maker. They both completed their studies to become teachers in girls' primary schools and shared a strong religious fervor that led them to join the Third Order of Saint Francis. However, their professional lives were to diverge: the eldest continued the highly «successful» career, institutionally programmed in advance, that she began at age seventeen, which ultimately led to opening her own boarding school and representing private education in the Sarthe on the Departmental Primary Education Commission. The younger sister made a radical choice at the age of nineteen in favour of a life as a Franciscan mystic, giving up her family name, inheritance and professional degree in order to live in poverty among the most destitute proletarians in Montmartre after the Communards were crushed. Pauline's deviance is somewhat clarified when the reasons attending her unusual choice are considered from an analytic standpoint.
The Village Fete By observing local fetes in Mayenne the author was able to ascertain the effects of the transformations which have taken place in the world of the peasants. The change from the village fete, in which ail the inhabitants participate, to the communal fete, which, with its distinction between actors and spectators, is more like a show, can be correlated with the spread within the peasant milieu of the townsman's image of the peasantry. The organization of «fetes a l'ancienne», in which the peasants are encouraged to play themselves, is doubtless an extreme case. All the same, the mixture of serious and burlesque in the sketches that the peasants present of their way of life reveals the ambiguity of a situation in which they do not always know if they are playing at being themselves or at being someone else. They have been deprived of a hold on the social definition of their identity, and it is almost always from others that they receive the definition of what they ought to be. Through these fetes, then, the peasants return, as it were, to their origins ; are they not seeking in this way to recover a social identity of their own ?
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the strategies of designation in the political discourse of Huguenots on the one hand, and Ultra-Catholics on the other hand, during the period preceding and following the conversion of Henry IV (1593). Using Discourse Analysis as a theoretical and methodological framework, this study focuses on how the different actors (parties, the King) are presented in these discourses. The corpus is composed of two texts, both published in 1593. The first one is by the Duke of Mayenne, leader of the Catholic League, and aims to reunify all Catholics within the kingdom in order to annihilate Protestantism. It is written before the conversion of Henry IV to Catholicism and expresses the frustration of Ultra-Catholics at having a protestant king. The second text is by Philippe Duplessis-Mornay on behalf of the Huguenots' political assemblies. It is a letter addressed to King Henry IV just after his conversion to Catholicism in 1593. This letter expresses the frustration of Huguenots as their protector converted to Catholicism. Analyzing the use of referential expressions according to the constructivist conception of the reference developed by Apothéloz and Reichler-Béguelin (1995), this study considers the referents as discourse-objects and the talking subject as acting on these objects. The study is qualitative and examines the different functions (argumentative, social, polyphonic) of the categorizations and recategorizations in order to underscore the discursive strategies of the authors. This paper argues that there are similarities in the way the different actors are presented in the two texts but that the perspective is essentially religious in the text by the Catholic League whereas the perspective is more political in the text by the Huguenots.

International audience ; The implementation of local projects for autonomy (energy and feed) and agricultural short circuits (pure vegetable oil and hedged-farmland wood energy) relies on farmers' and local officials' initiatives. Autonomy can be considered in relation to the use of local resources and to the involvement of farmers in territorial projects. These projects are part of the European Union Leader program and of a French program for innovation in rural spaces : "centers for rural excellence"(pôles d'excellence rurale). These projects combine different networks of stakeholders answerable to local institutions or cooperatives such as CUMA (French cooperatives for collective use of agricultural equipment) and CIVAM (French organization for the promotion of initiatives in rural and agricultural local development)or others agricultural networks. However, the transition from individual agricultural autonomy to collective action, then to projects for territorial development, points out the role of some local stakeholders. Some farmers who initiated the use of technical tools in local cooperatives play an essential part in interconnecting the agricultural development action with the local territory project. This is due to their socio-territorial entrenchment and to their specific profile as farmers, elected officials or associate managers. The projects for agricultural and local autonomy lead to question the representations of agriculture in relation to its multifunctionality and its socio-territorial dimension.

As it deals with either global or local energy and climate issues, this thesis is a topical work. In the context of international climate talks, European and national and regional policies, it aims to analyse the local initiatives in the Pays de la Loire. This work focuses on three main assumptions. The first states that renewable energy has been developed in the Pays de la Loire in the wake of local nuclear projects. The second argues that human potentialities are more determining than the physical and geographical energy potentialities of a given territory, at least in this phase of regional awareness encouraged by public policies. The third shows that local pressures have led the Région Pays de la Loire to back the development of renewable energy. Our research focuses on a qualitative approach which is based on numerous interviews and linked to a quantitative approach relying on statistical and cartographic databases. The first part of our work is devoted to the context. It shows that despite the rallying of the scientific community since the 1970's, awareness of climate change due to human activity is rather recent. Europe has played an important role in international climate talks and has set itself ambitious targets (such as energy-climate Package in 2007). However, if certain member States of the E.U., such as Germany, have volunteered to reduce their greenhouse gases emissions and develop renewable energy, other countries like France have been much less incentive. The second and third parts of our work, focusing on the Région Pays de la Loire, highlight that despite real physical potentialities, renewable energy still represents a small part of the whole production. We have established that there is a link between physical potentialities and the number of green equipments. The regional energy policy is rather recent, and has been more favorable to renewable energy and energy saving since the regional political success of the French Green Party in 2004. The rise of associative movements has also played a role in the consideration of energy and climate issues by the Région Pays de la Loire. To organize our last part dealing with local policies, we have constructed a typology based on many interviews. It shows that human potentialities, more than physical ones, can determine the establishment of a local energy policy. The approach of the SyDEV (Syndicat Départemental d'Energie et d'Equipement de la Vendée) is something of an exception since it is initially linked to the willingness to exploit wind-power in order to keep a hand on local wind resources. We have shown that the grounds of local energy policies may diverge, but also result from negative external elements. We have also shown that links exist between anti-nuclear demonstrations and the strong energy policy led by the Pays de Haute Mayenne ; between the pressures exerted by Nantes as the main regional city and the original approach undertaken by the Pays de Grandlieu Machecoul et Logne ; also between the need for local development and the reflection led by the PNR Loire Anjou Touraine. These local energy initiatives sometimes take root in a long history (as in the Pays des Mauges, for example). In addition, our investigation shows movements of various kinds, be they individual or collective. We have also studied the origins of the sensitivity characterizing the pioneers of renewable energy. Finally, our interest in the biggest regional cities has helped us show the examplary nature of Nantes Métropole and the more opportunist approach proposed by the Pays du Mans. Therefore, we may assume that behind local innovations there are men and women as singular wills linked to a political party, to a legacy of environmental or social movements, and to other types of convictions.
