Pickering first discusses the integration of Europe & how that might impact transatlantic relations. While the final form of EU is hard to determine, Pickering sees Europe as preserving centers of sovereignty as it integrates. Pickering then relates his experience explaining to the Chinese government what went wrong when NATO bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. He addresses anti-Americanism as well as the US public sentiment that engagement abroad does not serve US national interests. He then remarks on foreign policy continuity across elections. J. In an interview, Teju Cole, author, discusses the pitfalls of hashtag activism and an imaginary conversation he had with Barack Obama about the president's foreign policy choices. Cole said last night, he dreamed that he was with the president and a third dude -- the third dude's face, he remembers, was from that meme of Yao Ming looking incredulous. They're hanging out in Brooklyn, and at some point in the evening, he's bothered enough to finally speak his mind, and he just asked Obama how does he live with him, how does he carry on. And Obama turns to him, and without missing a beat, says, he's pretty sure people find a way to carry on. He does tweet to hear and to be heard, to speak and to be spoken to. But part of the reason people are on Twitter is also from some kind of hope of advancing a certain view of the world. Adapted from the source document.
