In June 2022, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said, "we [now] understand better how little we understand about inflation." So what do we actually know about inflation?
In this episode, Luigi and Bethany explore the origins of inflation with John Cochrane, Senior Fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution and author of the popular "Grumpy Economist" blog. They discuss Cochrane's new book, "The Fiscal Theory of the Price Level", where he offers a novel understanding of monetary policy by merging fiscal theory with the standard models of interest-setting central banks. Through a discussion of foundational economic principles such as Milton Friedman's theories – and the role of government debt, taxation, and spending levels – they shed light on what might drive inflation, and also on the requisite balance between democratically-elected institutions and independent central banks in the functioning of capitalism.
Sends his son, William Bailey Cochran, to the Academy; explains William's eye injury; discusses William's course of study.

Presented at a workshop entitled "Stepping toward the future: marketing environmental services on working lands of the American West" on May 23-25, 2011 on the CSU campus. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together regional and national leaders from the ranching community, conservation organizations, businesses, universities, and government to explore ways to catalyze the development of payments for ecosystem services in Colorado and across the American West. Over 80 participants attended the conference, which also highlighted the CCC's work to create an ecosystem marketplace in northern Colorado. ; Includes recorded video presentation. ; In Panel discussion #1, representatives from three stakeholders of an ecosystem marketplace discuss the creation of the market, how their organizations participate, and why they are participating. Participants include a farmer (supply side), water utility (demand side), and market organizer. ; In this video, Bobby Cochran, a market organizer from Willamette Partnership, speaks as a representative of one of three stakeholders of an ecosystem marketplace.

Cochrane is an international network that produces and updates new knowledge through systematic reviews for the health sector. Knowledge is a shared resource, and can be viewed as a commons. As Cochrane has been in existence for 25 years, we used Elinor Ostrom's theory of the commons and Institutional Analysis and Development Framework to appraise the organisation. Our aim was to provide insight into one particular knowledge commons, and to reflect on how this analysis may help Cochrane and its funders improve their strategy and development. An assessment of Cochrane product showed extensive production of systematic reviews, although assuring consistent quality of these reviews is an enduring challenge; there is some restriction of access to the reviews, open access is not yet implemented; and, while permanence of the record is an emerging problem, it has not yet been widely discussed. The assessment of the process showed that the resource, community, and rules-in-use are complex, vary between different groups within Cochrane, and are not well understood. Many of the rules have been informal, and the underlying ethos of volunteerism where reviews get done are important features and constraints to the organisation. Like all collective efforts, Cochrane is subject to collective action problems, particularly free-riding and variable commitment, and the under-production of public goods and internal processes, such as surveillance of product quality and procedures for transparent resolution of conflicts.
Healthcare decision-making is a process that mainly depends on evidence and involves increasing numbers of stakeholders, including the consumers. Cochrane evidence responds to this challenge by identifying, appraising, integrating and synthesizing high-quality evidence. Recently, a collaborative effort has been initiated in Iran with Cochrane to establish a representative local entity. A variety of multifaceted interventions were conducted according to Cochranes strategy to 2020, such as producing evidence, making Cochrane evidence accessible, advocating for evidence and building an effective and sustainable organization. In this report, the authors present the two and half year performance and achievements of Cochrane Iran based on a comprehensive and systematic approach. This case might be an example of health diplomacy, which is initiated by a successful international collaboration and proceed with recognizing the importance of adherence to the strategic action plans and goals. © 2020 The Author(s);.
