Urbanization requires many challenges. It is placing environmental load on natural resources because cities account for 60–80% of energy con­sumption across the globe and for more than 70% of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions. As a result, to ensure better living conditions for present and future generations, cities need to adopt the smart route and at the same time focus on the sustainability aspect. Cities needs to be both sustainable and smart. The sus­tainability aspect is not just in terms of environment but also economic, social, and governance. Managing and understanding the environment and its issues is not limited to one environmental discourse but to numerous discourses. It is created through histories which result in contradictions as narratives may oppose each other. This opposition is considered an important aspect of discourse. This article explores how biodiversity and sustainable development were discursively constructed by indigenous women living in an agricultural society with distinct cultural practices closely linked to rice farming and examined the outcomes arising from their construction of biodiversity and sustainable development. Seven women farmers were interviewed and conversations were transcribed, coded and analyzed through discourse analysis using Maarten Hajer's conceptual tool. Five major discourses emerged from this study: conserving biodiversity through the notion of contrasting views on farming responsibilities, conserving biodiversity through a sense of community, sustainability of government initiatives, negotiating cultural heritage and economic benefits, and articulating sustainable development.

This paper is an interpretative approach of a conflicting state of affairs in the Danube Delta, Romania, where local communities of Russian and Ukrainian fishermen claim their "rights" of wetland management in the context of (and sometimes against) the government policies of "conserving biodiversity". My general assumption is that divergences acting between fishermen and the authorities in the Danube Delta are essentially rooted in a kind of "generalized (but not insurmountable) incongruity" of two such occupational and institutional "worlds" and, moreover "worldviews".

Metadata only record ; The Abrolhos bank, an area of continental shelf off the coast of Bahia, Brazil, has the most biologically diverse coral reefs in the entire southern Atlantic Ocean. The coral reefs and nearby coastal ecosystems constitute a global conservation priority and are the target of the Abrolhos 2000 project, initiated by Conservation International as part of its global marine conservation strategy. Although portions of the Abrolhos reefs are located within a marine park, they are not afforded adequate protection due to insufficient conservation resources and a failure to be part of a broader integrated coastal management program. Through partnerships with government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, local communities, the private sector, and other stakeholders, Abrolhos 2000 is working to provide these needs while establishing local capacity for conserving coastal and marine ecosystems. The project's initial successes provide examples of useful strategies for making integrated coastal management work in the context of emerging economies.

In the mega-diverse country Peru, a resource intensive development model collides with the interest of conserving biodiversity. Peruvian biodiversity experts have developed different lines of argumentation as to how to integrate conservation into the sustainable development of their country. Applying grounded theory, I define five groups of conservation narratives based on the analysis of 72 qualitative interviews with experts working in areas of biodiversity conservation. I have labeled them: biodiversity protectionists, biodiversity traditionalists, biodiversity localists, biodiversity pragmatists, and biodiversity capitalists. These groups are each discussed in connection with what they have to say about biodiversity in relation to human life, valuation and knowledge systems, participation and leadership, substitutability of natural capital, and its predominant political strategy. In a second step, a comparative analysis of the dominant and diverging political perspectives is made. I argue that by deconstructing underlying premises and ideologies, common ground and possible opportunities for collaboration can be identified. Moreover, although the presented results can serve as a discussion scaffold to organize conservation debates in Peru, this example demonstrates how the terms biodiversity and sustainability are operationalized in conservation narratives. ; Open-Access-Publikationsfonds 2016 ; peerReviewed

Biodiversity refers to the varieties, multiplicity, and diversity of life in the ecosystem. It is being lost on a daily basis in Nigeria's Niger Delta. This is as a result of the environmental degradation caused by oil exploration and gas activities. In the process of drilling for oil and exploring for gas resources, the natural environment such as plants, animals and their communities is destroyed and endangered. Oil exploration activities continue unabated in the Niger Delta. There is need to combat biodiversity loss if not many of the benefits from biodiversity will be lost. With critical analysis the philosophy of deep ecology is examined and presented as having potentials to contribute to conserving biodiversity in Nigeria's Niger Delta. The study and practice of conservation biology is inherently interdisciplinary, addresses short and long time-scales and occurs within complex human–natural interfaces. Zoos and aquaria, in partnership with researchers, other non-government organizations, government, industry and educators, are combining knowledge of species and ecosystems with economics, psychology and law to create solutions for conserving biodiversity. From 22 to 25 May, the Conservation Forum of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria was a venue for discussing conservation research, education and interventions, from the scale of villages to global policy.
