In order to understand the relationship of Jewish religion and the Jewish family one has to examine some of the major basic sources dealing with Jewish life. The paper highlights selected commentaries related to the Jewish family, found in the Old Testament and the Talmud. The basic values related to the Jewish family as expounded by the Talmud are explained. The relationship of the celebration of Jewish religious holidays and family life are summarized, and the life cycle and its allied practices are noted. The paper concludes with a summary taken from the work of Nachum N. Glatzer, which explains the strengths inherent in classical Jewish family life.

Our story-book concept of Africa as the "dark continent" is no longer valid. Nor is that other storybook notion, "man against wild beasts." The sad fact is that Africa today is, and will probably be even more in the future, the scene of savage conflicts between black men and black men, Arabs and other Arabs, Moslems and Animists, Christianity and Islam. For a while the race issue in South Africa obscured the fact of antagonisms and hostilities elsewhere; since the horrible acts of torture and cannibalism occurred in the Congo, the world can no longer ignore the eruption of multi-layered hatred, motivated by race, religion, and ideology, in practically every corner of Africa.

Investigates how women, religion and culture have interacted in the context of 19th and 20th century Iran, covering topics as seemingly diverse as the social and cultural history of Persian cuisine, the work and attitudes of 19th century Christian missionaries, the impact of growing female literacy, and the consequences of developments since 1979

Despite the associations with conflict, religion is also a site of reconciliation. The limited literature on this, however, is constrained by its case study approach. This article seeks to establish a conceptual framework for theorizing the relationship between religion and peacemaking in conflict societies where religion is perceived to be part of the problem. The key to this is civil society and the four socially strategic spaces that religious groups can occupy within civil society and by means of which they can play a role as 'bridging social capital' in peace processes. However, religious peacemaking is mediated by the wider civil-society/state nexus. This shows itself in two sets of variables that simultaneously constrain and facilitate the relationship between religion and peacebuilding. We illustrate the framework with evidence from several examples in order to show how comparative analysis simultaneously illuminates case studies.
