Examination of state executives' perceptions of state Hatch Acts from a 1988 survey indicates that about two-fifths of those that responded think their present political activity level would increase if existing restrictions on political involvement were relaxed. Those respondents professed a slightly higher inclination for increased political participation than those in a 1977 study. Executives who are female, young, black, newcomers, and affiliated with social service agencies demonstrate the greatest potential for political activism stemming from liberalized state Hatch Acts. Debate continues over the question of whether state executives will act on these predilections and convert perceptions into behavior.
States allocate authority, under a federally‐imposed volume cap, to issue tax‐exempt bonds for financing private activities including industrial development, utilities, and low‐income housing. The generosity of the cap varies widely between states. This paper analyzes the relationships between the caps, political characteristics of the states, and the authorizations to competing constituencies. In per capita terms, each additional dollar of volume cap is associated with an additional $0.49 to $0.66 of borrowing per year. Mortgage revenue bonds and student loan bonds are the most responsive to variation in the cap. There is some evidence of political influence on the allocation process.

The period of reasonably free and vigorous political party activity in Iran was remarkably brief when viewed in the perspective of the very long history of that ancient land. Beginning slowly after the abdication of Reza Shah in 1941, party activity became steadily more intense until August 1953 when it was suddenly suppressed. But as brief as this period was, these twelve years witnessed patterns of political party development which deserve comparison with the experience of other developing states. The term "developing" has been in vogue throughout the post-World War II era. But for all that the term remains a vague one. Why Iran with its recorded history of over twenty five hundred years should be classified as "developing" while the United States with a history of less than two hundred years should be classified as "developed" is not immediately obvious.
Selecting Women, Electing Women is a groundbreaking book that examines how the rules for candidate selection affect women's political representation in Latin America. Focusing particularly on Chile and Mexico, Magda Hinojosa presents counterintuitive assumptions about factors that promote the election of women. She argues that primaries- which are regularly thought of as the most democratic process for choosing candidates- actually produce fewer female nominees than centralized and seemingly exclusionary candidate selection procedures

In the postwar years, Grace Lee Boggs developed her defining contribution to Marxist social theory within a tight group of theorists and activists dissenting from the official doctrine of Stalinism and, later, of Trotskyism: the Johnson-Forest Tendency (later Correspondence). Named after its initiators, CLR James (Johnson) and Raya Dunayevskaya (Forest), this Trotskyist splinter group elaborated an original theoretical position that soon forced them to sever their ties with the Old Left and anticipate some of the themes of the New Left. While the figure of James usually looms large in historical accounts of the group, their political position was borne out of intense internal debate, one in which the political contribution of its women is not often highlighted. This short essay lends a renewed focus to those arcane debates, as they constitute the core of Grace Lee Boggs's contribution to a version of Marxism, one both humane and emancipatory in its vision.
Providing a Nordic historical perspective, this collection aims to further our understanding of trade union activism and its role in modern society. Contributions from a range of leading scholars analyse the organisational conditions of mobilisation that were deployed by Nordic unionists, and explore the way that they interacted with other forms of social and political protest during the twentieth century. Covering illegal or so-called wildcat strikes, blockades, demonstrations and other activist measures, the authors examine the way that trade union activism in the Nordic countries aimed to move the political combat zone from the meeting rooms of the respective confederations into the streets and the public domain. The collection focuses on cases from Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, but comparisons are also made with countries such as Iceland, Germany, and the USA. Exploring the ways in which political parties have intervened in Nordic trade union activism since the early twentieth century, this unique collection offers new insights for those interested in labour market dynamics and the complex process behind the formation of salary and employment conditions. "Muslim societies are largely absent from the study of religion and politics in the social sciences, despite the fact that scholarly literature often presumes that religion exercises a colossal influence on social, political, and economic outcomes in predominantly Muslim countries. This volume utilizes real world events and newly available data to more fully integrate the study of politics in Muslim societies into mainstream comparative analytical frameworks. Moreover, it explores the extent to which theories about core topics of inquiry in political science apply to Muslim societies. The aim is to interrogate rather than presume both whether and how Islam and Muslims are distinct from other religions and religious communities. Through forty chapters by leading specialists, the Oxford Handbook of Politics in Muslim Societies examines a wide range of topics concerning regimes and regime change, electoral politics, political attitudes and behavior beyond voting, social mobilization, economic performance and development outcomes, and social welfare and governance. The Handbook shifts focus away from the Arab world as the barometer of politics in the Muslim world, recognizing that the Islamic world spans several regions, including Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Central Asia. This expanded geography enables a thorough investigation of which relationships, if any, hold across Muslim majority states in different regions of the world"--

The issue of civil society development with the participation of various institutes has always interested scientists in political, philosophical and public administration, with the pedagogical aspect in the vast majority of scientific research concerned with a particular institute: either public organizations, youth movement, or volunteer organizations. However, the problem of the youth social activity formation in civil society institutes has not been the subject of research into leading pedagogical intelligence, which has made the relevance and novelty of our research. The purpose of the article is to present the results of diagnosis of the initial state of formation of the youth social activity in accordance with the developed criteria and indicators. In the context of our study, youth social activity is defined as an integrated personal activity of a young person to initiate and realize a socially useful function in the social environment, taking into account the requirements of society and personal values. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the levels of social activity of young people in the motivational-value component showed a low level of interest in social and social life; self-actualization of personality; value orientations; aspiration of self-realization in public activity. Characterization of the initial status of the content-cognitive component of the youth social activity by the level of expression of the criterion «socio-political awareness» showed a low level of socio-political literacy; awareness of the structure and activities of public associations; use of social activity opportunities as tools of self-development. The analysis of the results of diagnostics of the initial state of the social-activity component of social activity of young people by the level of manifestation of the criterion of social competence gave an opportunity to state rather low data on the indicators: the ability to build interpersonal relationships; ability to plan and organize social and social activities; willingness to achieve results of actions; the level of self-organization formation. Describing the level of initial status of the next component of youth social activity – reflexive-evaluation – by the criterion of self-esteem, it is possible to state mainly low and average level of its formation in youth by the indicators: ability to analyze, evaluate the process and result of social activity, ability to self-esteem, degree of satisfaction community activities.
