An exploratory study is reported which tested empirically the voter's perception of his moment of decision prior to actually casting his ballot. On the basis of evidence by previous res'ers it was hyp'ed that the majority of voters would affirm their preelection day pol'al decision & vote as they had determined they would do. It was also hyped that the N of voters who switched or changed their pol'al decision, or made their pol'al decisions at the time of balloting, would be extremely small. A sample of 171 voters from the 9th election district of the town of Niskayuna, Schenectady County, completed a L J at the polling place at the time of local elections for councilmen. The sample represented 23.4% of all voters. 74% of the R's indicated that they had voted on all the issues & all the candidates as they had decided to do prior to coming to the polls. 13% admitted that they had not previously decided on at least 1 issue or candidate & made up their minds as they pulled the voting machine lever. 7% changed any of their votes at the time of balloting. More women than men were undecided on at least 1 issue or candidate before coming to the polls. The above hyp's seem confirmed. 1 Table. M. Maxfield.
