Drawing on results of the 1995 presidential elections, two parallel trends in French politics are examined. It is contended that the mainstream Left & Right are increasingly contesting the middle ground, & a majority of voters accept this, but a substantial minority of the electorate seek to protest the inability of any of the major parties to remedy France's socioeconomic ills, & therefore, vote for the marginal parties, those of dissension & protest. 4 Tables, 7 References.
