The growing industrial base in northern China necessitates China's obtaining the capability to defend those areas from Soviet attack. Consequently, since the late 1960s, the PRC has been assimilating modern technology into the Maoist view of warfare. The politics of implementing the resulting People's War Under Modern Conditions doctrine has at times been subject to intense political warfare with adverse consequences for China's nuclear force posture. AbstractThe aim of the paper is to elaborate the popular concept of spatial clusters in a broader regional development context. Are regional clusters natural and emergent? Do we understand how and why? Does the concept necessarily imply nearness? How much? How little? Is there a role for policy makers? This contribution offers an up‐to‐date critical perspective.

For decades the conventional wisdom maintained that 'public' (a euphemism for government) expenditure was good for economic life Professors Datta and Gordon, of the Universities of Visra‐Bhariti (West Bengal) and Southern California, claim that evidence from the Third World suggests how government retards economic growth and depresses living standards Their argument may be technical but their conclusions cannot be misinterpreted even by politicians

This volume presents a collection of essays on the enduring legacy and relevance of Max Weber, German sociologist, scholar of world religions, economic historian, social philosopher, and theoretician of modern political life. Published a century after his death, this volume brings together original essays by distinguished historians, philosophers, and social theorists to take stock of his significance in the early decades of the twenty-first century. It offers illuminating perspectives for both the novice and the expert, addressing the broader, more theoretical dimensions of his legacy that remain of central relevance to a wide range of disciplines.

One of the twentieth century's greatest philosophers presents the results of his lifetime study of man's cultural achievements An Essay on Man is an original synthesis of contemporary knowledge, a unique interpretation of the intellectual crisis of our time, and a brilliant vindication of man's ability to resolve human problems by the courageous use of his mind. In a new introduction Peter E. Gordon situates the book among Cassirer's greater body of work, and looks at why his "hymn to humanity in an inhuman age" still resonates with readers today. "The best-balanced and most mature expression of [Cassirer's] thought."--Journal of Philosophy "No reader of this book can fail to be struck by the grandeur of its program or by the sensitive humanism of the author."--Ernest Nagel, The Humanist "A rare work of philosophy and a rare work of art."--Tomorrow.
