BEYOND NATIONHOOD: HAUL MUSIC FROM A POSTCOLONIAL PERSPECTIVE IN WESTERN SAHARA AND MAURITANIA
This article examines the mobility of a precolonial musical style known as Haul music in two African countries, Western Sahara and Mauritania. Haul music is based on a modal system in which music and poetry are intrinsically related. This article traces the historical and musicological aspects of the Haul modal system in Western Sahara and Mauritania by offering an insight into how the postcolonial period has determined two narratives of Haul: a historical nationalism by way of revitalising the precolonial past in Mauritania; and political nationalism when reconsidering the ongoing process of decolonisation in Western Sahara and the exile of its people to the refugee camps of the Hamada desert since 1975. Further, this article shows how the mobility of the Haul modal system provides a reconsideration of a precolonial past in existing music cultures in North Africa.

Shaping Crisis Information - An Approach to Designing Effective Digital Information Dissemination Products (DIDPs) in the Context of a Public Health Emergency
In the context of a public health emergency such as the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Digital Information Dissemination Products (DIDPs) can have a significant impact on how people receive, process and assimilate information. Yet despite this potential, the many solutions that were put forward by organizations, governments and tech companies have not been able to properly counteract the alarming rates at which false or misleading information have been able to spread through online media (Tasnim et al, 2020; Wang et al, 2019). In this study, we define Digital Information Dissemination Products (DIDPs) as any online tool, service, platform or software —with or without a physical tangible form— focused on informing, educating, influencing or modifying key social behaviours, in areas of significant public interest. This paper proposes a new approach —structured through a set of facilitation tools— to rapidly design DIDPs, maximizing their impact and effectiveness in the context of a public health emergency. The proposed design methodology is based on a theoretical framework built around two information platform case studies built during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, a systemic analysis of the larger context of public health misinformation, and the principles of human-centered design. The case studies provide an understanding of the specific design requirements needed to develop DIDPs, while the systemic analysis provides a broader understanding of the larger information ecosystem and an overview of the dynamics affecting information flows in public health emergencies specifically. Finally, a series of recommendations for additional research are presented, highlighting the shortcomings of the proposed tools, and opportunities for further development.

Women, Class, and Identity Politics
In: Monthly Review, S. 23-34
ISSN: 0027-0520
The question of the oppression of women, the critique of which constituted feminism as an academic and political pursuit, has been feminism's enduring source of strength and appeal, yielding numerous critical theories and perspectives. This has produced continual conceptual shifts defining an evolving feminism, such as the shift from women to gender and from inequality to difference. It has also involved shifts from theorizing the general conditions of women's experience—oppressed at home and in the workplace, while juggling the conflicting demands of both—to theorizing the implications of the claim that, while gender may be the main source of oppression for white, heterosexual, middle-class women, women with different characteristics and experiences are affected by other forms of oppression as well. A possible way for Marxist feminism to remain a distinctive theoretical and politically relevant perspective might be to return to class, in the Marxist sense, theoretically reexamining the relationship between class and oppression, particularly the oppression of working-class women, within capitalist social formations.

O capítulo 19 de São Bernardo: fusão, transfusão, confusão
In: Literatura e sociedade, Band 23, Heft 28, S. 183-193
ISSN: 2237-1184
Roles and International Behaviour: Saudi–Iranian Rivalry in Bahrain's and Yemen's Arab Spring
In: Contexto internacional, Band 40, Heft 2, S. 295-316
ISSN: 1982-0240
Abstract Middle Eastern geopolitics are dynamic and complex. Ideological and religious matters interplay with domestic and international structures, generating several types of relations. This article aims to analyse the rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, two powerhouses that compete for leadership in the Gulf. The objective is to understand this competition through the lens of Role Theory, focusing on the national role conceptions that both countries project outwards. This theoretical framework presupposes that Iran and Saudi Arabia project self-made images that represent cognitive constructions of what policymakers believe their respective nations stand for. As an example, Iran projects a role of bastion of revolutions, which is firmly set against Saudi Arabia's anti-instability role. Regional instability periods, such as civil unrests, provide useful study cases for investigating the phenomenon of rivalry. Therefore, this article focuses on the Iranian and Saudi reactions to the events related to the so-called Arab Spring in Bahrain and Yemen, detecting when the rivalry is (somehow) present in their international behaviours. In conclusion, the article adds to a better understanding of Tehran's and Riyadh's ideological projection, and of how much of the region's politics are constrained by the rivalry status.

Catalyst Deactivation and Regeneration during Bio-Oil Upgrading Processes
In: https://dspace.library.uu.nl/handle/1874/372578
The production and upgrading of bio-oil from lignocellulosic biomass has been addressed in this PhD Thesis, a topic of considerable importance given the world's energy needs and the common aim of seeking for renewable sources. Particularly this case is driven by the legally binding target of 10% renewable energy in the transport sector mandated by the European Union, in which bio-fuels are considered essential for the energy mix of the EU28. Here, a three-pronged thermal + catalytic process, namely ex-situ catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) and subsequent deoxygenation is integrated -in one reactor with two fixed catalytic beds- to produce bio-oil suitable for transportation. The catalytic systems used for such operations are tailored zeolite-based materials. More particularly ZrO2 supported on ZSM-5 catalyst is used for CFP, and alkali (K) metal-grafted USY catalyst is used for subsequent upgrading, both shaped with the use of attapulgite as clay binder. The study of their origin of deactivation during reaction and the effect of regeneration conditions for their recycling, are the main objectives of study alongside the Thesis. Indeed, this fundamental understanding is essential to devise strategies for efficient reversal and ultimately enhance catalyst lifetime, ensuring also the economic sustainability of the process. The tailored catalyst materials have been tested at lab-scale, bench-scale as well as pilot plant facilities, corresponding to the three parts in which this PhD Thesis is divided. The analytical toolbox used for answering these research questions is mainly based on (micro)spectroscopic methods. At the lab scale, model reactions carried out under operando as well as in-situ conditions -mainly Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) and Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) diffuse reflectance (DRS) spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry (MS)- to provide insight into the mechanism and substrate-catalyst interactions under relevant reaction conditions. While at bench and pilot scales a broad range of bulk and spatially ...
