Abstract: This study examines journalistic principles, user experience, and representation of marginalized subjects in industry-leading immersive and gamified digital journalism. Through critical analysis of technology, industry, and culture, findings indicate a wide range of interactive and immersive formats leveraging game mechanics and aesthetics can enhance the core democratizing function of journalism to expose policy, power, ideology, and self-interest which is otherwise less apparent in traditional news stories. The future viability of interactives and news experiences is mitigated by financial, technological, and ethical challenges facing journalistic production practice with these emerging media tools and platforms. Gamified and immersive media variously meet these challenges, in some cases extending and advancing certain core principles of journalism, particularly advocacy on behalf of marginalized and oppressed groups.
