With the breakdown of communism in the USSR & Eastern Europe, perceptions of socialism, even in the broadest sense of public control over economic activity, have become increasingly negative. It is suggested that two factors have resulted in the discrediting of socialist theory: the naive or intentional misrepresentation of the Soviet collapse by industry, & the self-defeating misunderstandings of socialists & social democrats themselves. At the same time, the influence of leftists in the West has been waning due to the evolution of a global economy, which has eroded the power of organized labor & led to a fatalistic attitude on the part of the Left itself. It is suggested that the future may witness the failure of market economic practices in the former USSR & Eastern Europe & the rise of new leftist politics in the US. D. Karjanen
