Strikes, violence and economic crisis characterized life in Oaxaca City, Oaxaca, Mexico from the spring through late fall of 2006. Demonstrations began around the efforts of striking teachers and grew throughout the summer to include many groups critical of the state's governor. The confrontations led to blockades, violence and several acts of murder along with the cancellation of important events that had negative implications for the city's tourism economy. Nevertheless, little has been said about the rural response to these events. In this paper I present preliminary results interviews in three rural villages to better understand the impacts of political and economic unrest on rural communities.

AbstractColumbus, Ohio has witnessed rapid growth in its Latino population as immigrants settle in the city to access jobs and a generally low cost of living. Immigrants also face discrimination as they settle in Columbus and interact with the city's citizens. In this paper, we note how discrimination plays out in social and economic isolation; a lack of programmes to support the incorporation of Latinos in the city; and state laws that target immigrants. We present results of ongoing ethnographic work with the Latino community in Columbus.

AbstractIn this paper, we examine the gendered nature of international and internal migration that originates in the central valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico. Our goals are to define migration patterns and outcomes for Oaxacan women from the central valleys region and note the differences that mark migrant men and women. We use ethnographic data from anthropological research in 12 of Oaxaca's central valley communities to argue that local concepts of what defines correct behaviour (for both men and women) are critical to the outcomes and the differences that exist in the practices of migrant men and women.

Google Akademik atıf veri tabanı ve Ann Harzing programını kullanarak, göç çalışmalarında en çok atıfta bulunulan makale, kitap ve yazarları sıralayan listeler elde ettik.ABSTRACT IN ENGLISHTRANSLATION: Towards a Migration Letters Index: Most influential works and authors in migration studiesIn this review paper, we refresh and update our earlier ranking list based on citations in the field of migration studies. The results are categorised and presented separately for the books and reports, articles and book chapters and for authors of these works. In this latest elaboration, we have presented the updated version of the most influential works of all times list, but we have focused on the five years period from 2011 to 2016. 2011 is taken as a starting year and 2012 to 2016 covers the last five years. The resulting ranking lists from now on are to be presented for five year periods to be in line with most impact factor calculations available. Using the Google Scholar citation database and Ann Harzing ranking software, we have created ranking lists of the most cited articles, books and authors in migration studies.

Our paper reports on the challenges that confront Cameroonian migrants and, in particular, "migration dreamers" or migration aspirants who face serious limits, including social extinction or social relegation beyond recovery. Combining data from fieldwork with documentary records on trends in Cameroonian migration, this paper focuses on the social impact and adverse outcomes for aspiring migrants and movers. It reveals that there are migration aspirants who are victims of social extinction and feature prominently behind the camera. As their population increase, their activities have intricate and ferocious impacts at the micro or grassroots level with regard to the hazards thereof. In light of the intricate link between grassroots and national levels in socio-economic development, the article concludes that a major way out is to incorporate the issue into national policy frameworks and, in the process, also engage the attention of interested international agencies.

Objective.This study examines how racial/ethnic self‐identity interrelates with language ability, skin tone, and years in the United States and with indicators of socioeconomic attainment for Dominican immigrants in Reading, Pennsylvania, a new destination city that had a nearly 800 percent increase in the Dominican population between 1990–2000.Methods.In‐depth ethno‐surveys conducted with a sample of 65 Dominican‐origin adults are the basis for the descriptive analysis.Results.Based on open‐ended responses, nearly 43 percent of immigrants described themselves with a specific ethnic identifier (Dominican) and 41 percent use a more general panethnic identifier (Hispanic or Latino). Panethnic self‐identity is interrelated with stronger language ability, lighter skin tone, and more years in the United States, and with better indicators of socioeconomic status.Conclusion.Race/ethnic identity is an important component of Dominican immigrant assimilation in this new destination context.
