AbstractConcerns over inequalities that have been located between the roles of the core and periphery within the development of the IR discipline have led to questions of whether it is possible to build up theoretical concepts in IR based on national differences. There have not yet been studies however providing an in-depth look at how IR theorising has been developing within a periphery country or region, and exploring both the local and core level factors inhibiting the development of original theoretical paradigms from within that context. By looking at the Turkish experience, the article postulates that homegrown theorising may be the only means for periphery IR to be respectfully acknowledged by the core IR discipline.

As long as Turkey's desire for EU membership represented an abstract ideal…, Turkey's military and civilian elite could avoid acknowledging the potential political costs of membership in the eu. And as long as the Europeans kept Turkey at arm's length, that elite's willingness to implement the domestic reforms necessary for EU membership was never put to the test.

While divisive inter- & intraparadigm debates over theories & methodology abound in the discourse of international relations, issues surrounding geographically based divides between developed & developing world international relations scholars have received considerably less attention. Trends of globalization & internationalization in the past decade have strengthened the argument that such divides must be bridged. This article first investigates whether there have been changes in the level of dialogue between core & periphery IR scholars throughout the 1990s by looking at publishing practices in twenty leading IR journals worldwide over seven years. It suggests explanations for the continuing lack of communication based on interviews with IR scholars from the developing world. 4 Figures, 22 References. Adapted from the source document.

Offers a dialogue between Ersel Aydinli & James N. Rosenau that had its inception in the former's reading of the final autobiographical chapter Rosenau's Distant Proximities (2003). At issue is professional socialization & identity formation for newcomers to the international relations discipline. Discussion centers on negotiating the various orthodoxies in IR to establish one's own identity, Roseneau's notion of "pre-post-modernist," the place of the concept of transformation/change in the IR discipline, & related methodological issues.
