Après 1945, une grande partie de la classe politique était irrémédiablement déconsidérée. De la simple acceptation du régime de Vichy à la collaboration active avec l'ennemi, nombreux étaient ceux qui s'étaient compromis au point d'être à tout jamais exclus de la vie publique française.

Date fictive, en attente de renseignements ; La présentation d'un ensemble de travaux qui ont jalonné une quinzaine d'années de recherches est aussi l'occasion de jeter un regard rétrospectif sur son propre parcours. L'entreprise peut paraître risquée, car la tentation est grande de reconstruire a posteriori une homogénéité fictive, l'illusion d'un projet mûri de longue date et qui trouverait son accomplissement dans les productions successives de l'auteur. La réalité est généralement plus prosaïque: les ethnologues savent à quel point les contingences du terrain retentissent sur le choix des thèmes qu'ils privilégient. Mon propre itinéraire est ainsi jalonné par des expériences très différentes. J'ai en effet travaillé dans deux types de sociétés très contrastés, en Afrique et en Europe. Quand j'ai commencé ma recherche sur les Ochollo d'Ethiopie méridionale, je n'imaginais pas que dix ans plus tard j'étudierais la vie politique locale dans un département français. Il ne me serait pas non plus venu à l'esprit que j'aurais un jour l'occasion de faire partie d'une confrérie religieuse dans un pueblo d'Andalousie et de me pencher sur les transformations du paysage dans la périphérie de Séville.

This paper shows that traditional practices are too deeply embedded in our conception of public life to be rendered obsolete by the emergence of new channels of political communication. Far from being antinomic, ritual work and the use of media bring about new formats where traditional referents and modern procedures combine with each other. An investigation of local politics in a French "département" (county)l'Yonne, a study of the symbolic dimensions involved in the behaviour of national leaders such as President Mitterand, and, finally, an anthropologically oriented analysis of current rituals of consensus and conflict suggest the following conclusions. Media treatment deeply transforms both the form and content of rituals of conflict. On the other hand it gives a new resilience to consensual rituals whose features it mainly extends or amplifies. Finally, it fosters the emergence of altogether new rites merging communicative strategies with traditional features and religious themes. ; On a tendance à voir une sorte de hiatus entre la communication politique moderne et les différents aspects du rituel qui ont jusqu'ici prévalu dans les sociétés traditionnelles. Cet article montre que l'apparition de ces nouvelles formes de communication politique n'implique pas mécaniquement la disparition de pratique liées à toute une conception de la vie publique ; loin qu'il y ait réellement antinomie entre le travail rituel et l'utilisation des médias, ceux-ci favorisent l'émergence de nouvelles formes qui combinent les referents anciens et les procédures modernes.
