ISSN: 2182-9691
This article analyses the ideal of sanctification of the work of Opus Dei, a Catholic organization with a more conservative nature and target of media coverage and general common sense perceptions. Through mobilization ofthe Weberian perspective of the Protestant work ethic, it is possible to find similarities between (intramundane) asceticism ofOpus Dei and the Puritan work ethic, mainly of a Calvinist slant. To identify common traits, empirical research was carried out in the Metropolitan Areas of Portoand Lisbon, based on interviews with members of Opus Dei. The analysis of the results allowed us to obtain a deeper knowledge not only about the conception of work and lifestyles, but also about the dynamics of this institution.

In: Revista de sociología, Band 38, Heft 1, S. 171-191

The Ironic Legacy of an Opus Dei Bishop: Native Priests and Andean Catholicism in Postconflict Apurímac, Peru
In: Latin American perspectives, Band 46, Heft 5, S. 59-72
ISSN: 1552-678X
Since the end of the civil war, the diocese of Abancay in the south-central Peruvian Andes has produced a clergy made up entirely of men born and raised in the diocese where they now work. Yet, ironically, this diocese was specifically criticized by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for its lack of engagement with local Andean populations. Abancay is a politically and theologically conservative diocese strongly influenced by the Opus Dei bishop who trained this generation of native clergy, but it is also a diocese in the process of forging a new relationship between Andeanness and institutional Catholicism.
; This paper addresses the following question. How was the feminine identity built among the numerary women of Opus Dei in Mexico from 1949 to 1970? The dialectic process that conformed their identity on the one hand shows an early path towards modernity through higher education and access to the workplace but, on the other, exhibits a return to traditional roles assigned by the male hierarchy of the organization, that included the perform of all domestic chores in the Opus Dei's facilities, as a path to reach holiness. The paper analyzes these developments using records, visits to Opus Dei's facilities and in-depth interviews with some of the pioneer members of the organization. It also reflects on laicism and the tolerance of the arrival of new catholic organizations to an anti-secular environment in post-revolutionary Mexico.
